Grailville unveils a new logo This fresh and approachable new logo provides Grailville with a great opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to our rapidly growing community. Grailville Associate Director, Beth Barr, was a clear voice in creating the new image. Since her start at Grailville, seven years ago, she has wanted a new logo for the organization. “We need a logo that speaks to the place and land that is central to Grailville, something that connects people to our mission. This image evokes that.” With the addition of new staff, like Marketing & Progam Associate Morgan Lyn, there was a lot of new steam behind creating a new logo. The logo helps to mark this time at Grailville as one of progress towards the future. The new logo was created by John Robinson of John Robinson Design. John Robinson is not a stranger to Grailville. He and his wife, Grail member Elizabeth Robinson, are our neighbors and he walks our land frequently and leads bird watching programs here. His knowledge of Grailville and The Grail mission along with his exceptional graphic design skill and know-how, made him a perfect fit for the job. As you can see, it was executed beautifully! The new logo is not the only change in the works. Grailville will also be rolling out a new, more user friendly website in the months to come. Keep your mouse ready! My 35-year association with The Grail, the vast majority of which has been at Grailville, has taught me a global perspective on the world. We all live downstream from someone and someone lives downstream from us. We are all global citizens and the decisions we make can reflect our commitment to the global good. It helps me to be a member of this amazing international women’s movement called The Grail, because I can personally know women from all over the globe. An issue ceases to be a story in National Geographic or a statistic on the news and becomes the real-life story of the woman in front of me in tears. I can hear her story and understand how what happens here affects what happens there, especially her family’s ability to build a stable life. This was my experience as a delegate to the International General Assembly of The Grail in South Africa last September. It became clear to me that sustainability is everybody’s issue. As Grailville’s new Director, I want to work with staff to make Grailville a regional resource for the global good, building a sense of fairness about how the world’s resources could be used to benefit everybody, not just those of us who are the most privileged. It is going to take more of us putting our ideas, energy, creativity and resources together. We want to build alliances and make connections that will support Grailville as a spiritual resource, a local food resource, and a model of sustainable practices and renewable energy. We will be asking your help in building a sustainable future for Grailville. 932 O’Bannonville Rd Loveland, OH 45140 www.grailville.org (513) 683-2340 Committed to the Global Perspective July - December 2012 Continued on the next page… Becky Hill (photo by Danny Hill)

Grailville unveils a new logoThis fresh and approachable new logo provides Grailville with a great opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to our rapidly growing community.

Grailville will also be rolling out a new, more user

friendly website in the months to come.

Committed to the Global Perspective, continued

Grailville, thanks to the support of The Grail in the U.S., has hired Bonnie Hendricks to be our Sustainability Initiatives Coordinator. In ad-dition to helping us assess the sustainability needs of our buildings, she is working closely with me to identify ways to make Grailville more resilient and better positioned for the future, as we face the challenges of climate change, global economic instability and shrinking fossil fuel resources. This work is inspired by the Transition Town movement (see www.transitionnetwork.org).

Some Grailville staff members recently attended the Green Umbrella Sustainability Summit in Cincinnati and learned that if 10% of the re-gional population shifts 10% of its food budget to buying local, it will keep $49 million within the local economy and create over 500 local jobs. This is a do-able task and I ask you to consider making the 10% shift to buying local food wherever you live. This initiative was brought forward by the Local Food Team of Green Umbrella in which Bonnie Hendricks and Mary Lu Lageman are active.

Staff members Morgan Lyn and Joy France are working on the local food shift by designing the Farm to Fork dinner (including farm tours and hayrides) on September 23rd featuring women farmers and Grailville-Grown produce in cooperation with Edible Ohio Valley magazine. (see page 3)

As part of our sustainability work, Grailville will be hosting the Pachamama Alliance Symposium, Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream on September 15. Its purpose is to build support internationally to shift the dream of the modern world from personal/corporate profit to one that creates an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on the earth. Its goals and design are so aligned with the purposes of the Grail and the needs of our time that we look forward to sharing this group experience in the Oratory with as many of you as can possibly attend. (See below)

On another international issue, local Grail member, Terri Carter, has arranged for Sarah McCormick, a Loveland native, to present her experi-ence volunteering in Thailand with human trafficking prevention and how that connects to her work with trafficking victims in Cincinnati, on August 19th. We’ll see how this global issue is also a local one, especially but not exclusively for women and girls. The Cincinnati Regional Grail is inviting you to join us for the presentation and discussion. (See below)

I’ve highlighted here some new additions to our program calendar that reflect The Grail’s commitments to global issues. Look further inside to see additions of natural dyeing and weaving classes, vermicomposting and more beer making! If you haven’t taken the time yet, don’t miss the chance to work with Pauletta Hansel on writing, poetry-making and creating, in a weekly class, a one-time event or a weekend arts retreat. Other con-templative opportunities are available in a single day of quiet, or a week with Zen Master AMA Samy, or a weekend experiencing feminine wisdom with Nzuzu’s Quanita Munday.

While we offer a full spectrum of programs and retreat center bookings at affordable prices, it must be said that the costs of maintaining the sacred space that is Grailville are not covered by fees for these services. We count on your donations and need your support to be sustainable. Your time, energy, referrals, prayers and donations are greatly appreciated.

In gratitude, Becky Hill, Director

Human Trafficking:Around the World & Around the CornerSunday, August 19, 3:00 pm

Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights, and a prob-lem that is increasingly being brought to light in the media and in public consciousness. It affects women, men, and children in every country on earth. While intensive raid-and-rescue operations re-ceive a high profile in coverage of human trafficking, there are other approaches to tackling this problem. Loveland native Sarah McCor-mick will share her perspectives of working with trafficking victims in Cincinnati and volunteering in trafficking prevention in Thailand. Please come to join the dialogue about trafficking’s root causes and related issues, trafficking in the Cincinnati area, and the concrete steps that we can all take to fight against trafficking.

From our experience as a Center of the International women’s movement of The Grail, we are called to understand issues from the perspective of being global citizens. Join us as we strive to build a global community.

Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the DreamSaturday, September 15, 9:30 am - 2:30 pm The Awakening the Dreamer Symposium is a profound inquiry into a bold vision: to bring forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence on Earth. This transforma-tive experience is designed to empower participants to respond to our current global reality with action and informed, grounded optimism about our future. Through dynamic group interactions, leading edge in-formation, and inspiring multimedia, participants are inspired to recon-nect with their deep concern for our world and are empowered to make a difference in the world. Awakening the Dreamer is a program of the Pachamama Alliance and is presented by The Grail in partnership with the Marianist Movement of Greater Cincinnati. Women don’t just cook the food, they grow it! Grailville, edible Ohio Valley magazine and Women Farm invite you to an event honoring women farmers and encouraging women to follow in their footsteps. Grailville’s rich history of women in agriculture began with our founding in 1944, and continues today! Join us for a beautiful meal prepared by local chef Tami Whitfield and her sous chef Joe Kirchmayer of Cafe 45140 with locally-sourced ingredients, including Grailville-Grown produce.

Dinner will be preceded by a farm tour and outdoor reception honoring women farmers, the largest growing demographic in farming. There will be plenty of time to converse with folks interested in fresh and local foods and with the people who bring them to our tables, including specially invited women farmers, both beginning and seasoned.

Practice of Poetry Workshops for WomenThe Practice of Poetry is based on the belief that much of what makes good poetry goes hand-in-hand with good spiritual practices: paying attention to the interaction of our inner lives and the outer world, making time for reflection, nurturing supportive relationships, honest assessment of what to keep and what to let go. This series of workshops for women led by Pauletta Hansel, MFA, focuses on creative writing as a tool to listen deeply to your own heart’s wisdom. Bi-weekly workshops provide guidance in the art and craft of poetry as well as opportunities for writing and sharing with others. The op-tional Poetry Craft Sessions (held on alternate weeks) are used to give and receive constructive feedback on poems.

Whether you are a practicing poet, a beginning writer, or an appreciative reader, the Practice of Poetry series offers many ways to use poetry as a spiritual and creative practice.

The Way of Worms: Vermiculture for the Home GardenerSaturday, August 25, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pmIt takes a village (red wigglers, microorganisms, fungi, insects, and other lively creatures) to make vermicompost happen! It also takes people to build a rich environment for worms and other critters to turn everyday food scraps into nutrient-rich fertilizer that can be used for houseplants and outdoor gardens. Grailville’s Mary Lu Lageman and John Howland will lead this exploratory program, plunging participants into the life of soil! The program will begin with a discussion of the art and science of backyard turning-bin composting. Lageman and Howland will also instruct participants in composting with worms in containers. Participants will explore the vital role of worms in the web of life. We envision a lively exchange of information and questions, as well as hands-on experience with our historic lineage of red wigglers.

Welcome Home! The Grail welcomes six new Members

On April 15, Julia Almaguer, Harlene Bryenton, Quanita Munday, Emily Snyder, Nicky Westrick and Claudia Yamasue, six women with deep ties to Grailville, joined The Grail in the United States.

Like many Grail members, these women first experienced The Grail’s spiritual and community sustenance through their in-volvement with Grailville, whether as program participant, com-munity partner or (in the case of Emily) as a Grail staffer work-ing at Grailville! We are thrilled these women have found a home in the Grail at Grailville.

Connecting the DotsOn May 5, people gathered across the planet as part of a coordinated day of global action to “Connect the Dots” between climate change and the extreme weather being experienced everywhere.

People in Kenya brought attention to the deadly drought conditions there; in New Zealand the focus was on severe flooding; people in the atolls of the Maldives shared the impact of sea-rise on their island; in Bolivia folks travelled to the disappearing glacier. Here in the US peo-ple gathered in Texas around the tornados and wildfires in New Mexico.

Others came together to focus on positive solutions – actions we can take to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere: trees were planted in Vietnam and given away in Harlem, NY; autumn leaves were collected in Austra-lia for compost; in Sweden donated bicycles were collected for ship-ment to the Bicycle Empowerment Network in South Africa.

And here at Grailville we tended the organic gardens and learned about the role organic gardening plays in the carbon cycle; a potluck picnic rounded out a great day! For more information and pictures from around the planet, go to www.climatedots.org.
