Aerobics The purpose of aerobics is to promote cardio-vascular fitness, tone and strengthen muscles, and increase range of motion. This class utilizes the Wii gaming system for instruction. Facilitated by GCC Staff.

Aging With Attitude—New Group! In this group for adults, fifty years of age and older, we discuss the issues of rela-tionships, losses, and health as we age. We focus on the well being of each individ-ual as we look for hope, strength, and friendship

Anger Management Anger Management is an open group for participants to process their personal experience with anger and receive support with expressing their anger in more constructive and effective ways. The psycho-educational component of the group helps participants to learn the difference between normal anger and problem anger, understand its impact on social, occupational and daily functioning, and learn how to identify the triggers that can lead to uncontrollable anger. Coping skills are dis-cussed and practiced, including relaxation techniques and art therapy. The group offers an educational and emotionally supportive forum to learn, discuss, and prac-tice new skills in a safe and confidential environment. $10/meeting for court or-dered participants.

Art Club Come join us for this fun group that utilizes art as a medium to socialize and inter-act with your peers. We’ll encourage expression of the artistic and vocal type. All supplies are provided.

Art Therapy This specialized program uses art therapy techniques, to help individuals work through their issues and express themselves through creative projects. Qualified clinical professionals lead the groups, one hour per week.

Arts & Crafts Individuals gain self-confidence and enjoyment through creating art projects they can take home, give as gifts, or display at the Center. A wide variety of fun and creative projects are offered in this class, including card making, collages, mosaics, and more.

Art Time This groups utilizes a variety of art mediums to create art work that will be displayed in the Center for the community’s appreciation and enjoyment. The group pro-motes connecting with others through the medium of art. No previous art experi-ence needed.

Basketball Our basketball program encourages healthy competition for the ambitious player, builds communication and teamwork skills, and promotes fitness and exercise.

Beading Participants learn how to make beautiful beaded jewelry and decorative pieces using a variety of beads. Special tools and materials are used to demonstrate and teach techniques. Participants are encouraged to develop and create their own unique, eye catching pieces.

Bingo Come play a friendly game of Bingo! GCC’s participant facilitated program offers a great opportunity for socialization and group cooperation. Players are given two bingo cards and can win one prize per week.

Clothes Closet The clothes closet offers individuals a “thrift store” style shopping experience for free. The program encourages a clean, healthy appearance and builds a confident self-image. All clothes and accessories are donated from individuals and agencies throughout the community.

Community Meeting This daily group offers a place for individuals to discuss issues of daily living in our community, ask questions or concerns, and learn about GCC programs and ser-vices. The group offers a supportive, interesting, and educational environment and is designed to increase each individual’s awareness and participation in the Center.

Grace Community Center (membership required) The Grace Community Center, located in downtown San Jose, serves adults with Mental Illness and other Cognitive Disabilities. The Center provides drop-in recrea-tion activities, nutrition, and self help skills groups. You must become a member* of the Center in order to participate in all activities located on the premises, with the exception of Monthly Dances and Annual Special Events (offered in October, November, and December). Most activities are free with membership unless otherwise noted. Drop in activities include art groups, process and support groups, nutrition, and programs which teach daily living skills. We also offer access to fitness equipment, a computer lab, a pool table; and other lounge type areas where you can relax with music, television, or just socialize with other members. The Center also offers volunteer opportunities. To learn about opportunities for students and other community members, contact Jo Eclevia at 408-293-0422. We also provide opportunities for those needing to fulfill Court Ordered obligations. Creative Writing Writers of all abilities express their unique creativity and reflect on group and/or individual themes. Sharing of these thoughts, stories, poems, and prose is espe-cially honored and encouraged by all.

Cultural Exposure (CATS) Enjoy monthly community events such as sports, plays, movies, museums, con-certs and more! These events are made possible by CATS. Community Access Ticket Service (CATS) is a Bay Area group that provides low cost access to tickets/admission to area recreation and cultural activities. Spaces are limited. Check with GCC staff for upcoming events.

Gardening GCC’s garden area provides a pleasant, peaceful environment within the busy downtown area, with a soothing fountain, shaded trees, and beautiful flowers. Individuals experience nature and learn how to prune, plant, fertilize and care for plants.

G90x—New Group! G90x is a complete fitness system designed to get GCC members in the best shape of their life. This program includes 5 intense work-outs that use resistance and body-weight training, cardio, plyometrics, abdominal work, balance training, along with a nutrition plan and work-out calendar.

Leisure Walking This group travels to walking destinations throughout Santa Clara County, including malls, hiking trails, parks, and downtown areas. Walking is healthy exercise and enjoyable too. Join this group for some cardiovascular exercise.

Life Skills—New Group! Life Skills Group deals with the real world basics. The group will assist individuals in developing skills in many practical areas of life and overcoming barriers to main-taining these skills from day to day.

Lunch Program GCC serves a hot, well balanced lunch Monday through Saturday. Fee is 75 cents per day on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Tuesdays is 50 cents and Saturdays are $1.

Men’s Group Men are offered the opportunity to gather together and discuss “guy stuff”. The group facilitator brings discussion topics and activities and also welcomes concerns and contributions from the group.

Monthly Dances GCC hosts festive dances featuring talented DJ’s and live bands that perform for the crowds dancing and listening enjoyment. Dances are held on the second Fri-day of every other month starting in February, except for October, November and December when we host very special events. Admission is $2 at the door. Snacks are provided.

Morning Meditation—Additional days added! Center yourself and create a positive intention for your day during this 20 minute “quiet” group. Calming environment provided for meditative focus. Basic medita-tion techniques taught. No prior experience required.

Movie Night Come see the latest DVD releases and popular classics on GCC’s big screen. Snacks are provided. Held each Friday night except when a monthly dance occurs.

New You Hair & Nail Salon Come and get your hair trimmed by area salon professionals. You can also have a manicure done by community volunteers. Call the Center at 408-293-0422 for an appointment. You must come with clean hair.

News Grabbers The goal of this discussion group is to raise awareness of GCC members and in-spire their participation in the local community, as well as teach them skills to pro-mote a healthy lifestyle. The group spends a portion of time focusing on current local, state, national, and international affairs as reported in the news. The other portion of the program is dedicated to healthy living, exercise, and nutrition. Come share your knowledge and learn more about the world in which we live.

Open Art Studio This open studio is great for artists of all skill levels. This group offers various me-dia including 3-D materials, acrylic and water-based paint, and drawing materials. Artists work independently and are supported by staff members and volunteers.

Open Gym—New Group! Open Gym is a combination of Basketball & G90x. This program offers members an opportunity to enjoy a structured game of 5 on 5 basketball on the basketball court and another opportunity to achieve their fitness goals on the GBC stage.

Painting & Drawing Further your ability and understanding of 2-D art. Develop a strong sense of design through decision-making and problem-solving projects that may include media such as graphite, oil or chalk pastels, colored pencil, and marker. Individuals will also explore the style of many artists throughout history, while developing their own paintings. Figures, landscapes, and still-life subjects are considered and studied.

Relaxation Skills Group This brief group offers deep breathing exercise with progressive relaxation in order to maintain calm throughout the day. It provides skills and tools to manage anxiety and anger. Science, History and the Arts Participants expand their knowledge of Science, History, and the Arts by watching a different film each week. These films are chockfull of research and facts, allowing members to increase their understanding of the world around them. The film is followed by a short discussion on the topic and members are encouraged to offer suggestions for future films.

Seasoned Sewing Group This course is geared towards experienced sewers. Individuals are encouraged to use their creative skills to make a variety of projects. They can also mend, hem, and make minor repairs to clothing. All equipment and supplies are provided.

Self-Esteem Support Group—New Group! This group provides a safe and welcoming environment for individuals to learn and share techniques for assessing, improving, and maintaining self-esteem. Members will focus on celebrating their personal strengths and uniqueness.

Sewing, Knitting & Crochet This course is geared towards all levels of sewers, and needle crafters. Individuals are encouraged to use their creative skills to make a variety of projects. They can also mend, hem, and make minor repairs to clothing with the help of experienced class facilitators. All equipment and supplies are provided. So Fresh & So Clean—New Group! GCC’s homeless members are provided with a place to shower and do their laun-dry. Participants can attend to their most basic hygiene needs through this pro-gram. Members are supplied with fresh towels, toiletries, privacy, and the utmost respect. Staff are on-hand to ensure safety and peace-of-mind of all participants.

Stress Management Each week participants will complete a “managing feelings and self care report card” to check in with how they are doing on their wellness goals. The group will be led in various relaxation exercises and coping skill practice. We will also talk about what can help reduce stress in the community and at home.

Stained Glass All phases of the art of stained glass are taught within this class, including project design, glass cutting and shaping, lead soldiering and glass cleaning. A variety of colored and textured glass is available. Space is limited. Materials fee of $6 per class.

Tea Time/Finding Our Bliss—New Group! Relax and gather with others to explore what happiness is. Talk, art, quotations, stories… all about blissful living. Tea offered.

The Entertainer The Entertainer is a “talent show” that welcomes all talents. Individuals bring a song, story, poem, dance or joke to share with their peers. Using the GCC enter-tainment system including microphone and large screen TV, entertainers dazzle the audience with original works and popular music selections.

You Grill It The U Grill It class will focus on easy to prepare breakfast and lunch dishes. Each class will feature a single dish. 25 cent donation.

Wii Time Make new friends and socialize while engaging in a variety of fun games utilizing the Nintendo Wii gaming system. A little friendly competition and exercise will be enjoyed by all.

Women’s Group This socialization and support group is open to all female members of GCC. It is an on-going group designed to improve self esteem, social support networks, commu-nications skills, healthy living and personal safety skills among women.

Yoga—2nd Day added! Yoga participants will learn relaxing, gentle stretches and basic yoga techniques to build a sense of inner peace and positive thinking, while decreasing stress and increasing overall sense of health and wellness. The techniques help individuals develop the ability to relax their mind and body to feel more peaceful and improve concentration skills.
