Energy Flow Test Review
This is a test review:
• Do your best to fill in what you can in your journal without finding the answers.
• Use the following slide to check your answers. • When you are confident with your answers, go
back through the slides and quiz your table partner.
Energy Pyramid•In your energy pyramid, label where:• most energy is found• least energy is found• Secondary consumers
are found• producers are found• primary consumers are
found• Herbivores are found• carnivores are found
• most organisms are found
• Least organisms are found
• Plants are found
• Tertiary consumers are found
• decomposers are found
Most energy
Least energy
producers
Primary consumers
herbivores
carnivores
carnivores
plants
Secondary consumers
Tertiary consumers
decomposers
Least organisms
Most organisms
Why is there a loss of energy as you move up the pyramid?
• 90% of an organism’s energy consumption is used by that organism for its life process and released as heat. Only 10% is left for the next organisms in line
Describe the relationship between producers and consumers
• Producers make food and oxygen for consumers and consumers provide water and carbon dioxide for plants
How are elements recycled on earth?
• Elements are contained within matter and matter is broken down (decomposed) and returned to earth to be used again.
Why are decomposers important? In what cycles are decomposers important?
• Decomposers break down dead organic matter- returning nutrients to the soil.
• Decomposers are a part of all nutrient cycles.

*What will happen to the food web is the rabbits go extinct?
What is the difference between matter cycle and energy flow
Matter- what you start with you end with, it is reused
Energy-what you start with you do not end with
Why do most food chains have fewer than 5 levels?
• There are fewer than five levels in a food chain because there is a decrease in energy available from one level to the next.
Describe the compost cycle. Why is it important?
• Organic wastes (table scraps, grass clippings, leaves etc) are collected and placed in a compost bin with soil. Decomposer break down the organic matter making it into nutrient rich soil (fertilizer)
• The nutrients made are used as fertilizers for new plants. People save money and less garbage is going to the landfill
