Please keep in your prayers members of our community who are unwell and remember those near to them as they continue to be strong in their love and support.

The following are Chisholm’s Action Goals for 2017. They will be our learning focus for the year in Religious Education, Literacy and Numeracy.

Religious Education Goal: For all students to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of their Catholic faith.

Literacy Goal: Every student will develop a deeper level of comprehension by interpreting explicit information in texts.

Numeracy Goal: To increase the number of students who use reasoning and fluency while communicating their understandings when problem solving.

Please contact me if you require any clarification of these goals. We encourage all members of our community; students, teachers and parents to work together in achieving these goals.

Finally, please find in this Newsletter a message to all Parents and Carers regarding the use of Social Media. I encourage all members of our wonderful community to embrace what has been communicated. This message will also be posted on the official school social media sites as well as on the CCG Facebook site. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

Sunday Mass at Chisholm Mass is held here at Chisholm every Sunday at 9:30am. Each Sunday, a small community gathers together in the school MPA to celebrate Mass, followed by a light morning tea.

The HISTORY OF LENT dates back to centuries ago with Christians spending time preparing to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The word Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning to lengthen and Lent comes at a time when the hours of daylight are lengthening in the Northern Hemisphere as Spring approaches. The reason Lent is 40 days is because 40 is a significant number in Christian scriptures, but the most notable is perhaps that Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert in preparation for his ministry. Ash Wednesday is seen as the day to clean the soul before Lent begins. The ashes come from burning the palms from Palm Sunday 2016. Purple is the colour of Lent: firstly, because it is associated with mourning and so anticipates the pain and suffering of the crucifixion, and secondly because purple is the colour associated with royalty, and celebrates Christ's resurrection and sovereignty.

PARENTS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND. This week is the beginning of Lent. To begin this important Church season, Mass will be celebrated at 11.30 on Ash Wednesday in the MPA (Year 5 will receive the ashes at Collaroy). During Lent we have Staff Prayer on Fridays in the Staffroom at 8.20 and we have Lenten Assemblies for students on Monday mornings. At both these liturgical occasions we have the Scripture from the appropriate Sunday of Lent. During Lent we support Project Compassion.

PRAYING: Families could pray before meals, remembering that many people in the world do not have three meals a day.

"Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from

Thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen."

FASTING: This can mean abstinence from food, for example, not having cakes/biscuits for morning tea in Lent, but it can also mean giving up a night of television for example, and instead enjoying a family activity like playing a board game. Traditionally, on the Fridays of Lent we eat fish instead of meat.

GIVING: This means to give of oneself to others by doing good works and donating to organisations, which help those living in poverty, such as Caritas.

As a community, Chisholm supports the work of Caritas through Project Compassion and students will participate in a Project Compassion Day on Friday, March 31st and donate a gold coin to wear mufti.

ABOUT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

Catholic Schools Week (CSW) 2017 will be held from 5 to 11 March and will involve the communities of all Catholic primary

and secondary schools across NSW and the ACT.

First and foremost, Catholic Schools Week is about celebration.

One of the major objectives of Catholic Schools Week (CSW) is to raise public awareness of the strengths of Catholic schools and highlight the significant contribution the Catholic education sector makes to our state and nation. CSW is an opportunity to share with the broader community the great things that take place in our schools every day. The week is designed to be a lively celebration for all who have a stake in our schools – students, staff, families, priests, and parishioners. It is for them to share in the joy and distinctive character of Catholic schools. Schools can, and often do, rely on positive word-of-mouth to build their school’s reputation and promote specific events and programs, but the media also plays a role in raising the profile of the Catholic school in the wider community. See first-hand all that our schools have to offer during Catholic Schools Week.

OPEN DAY FOR 2018

Our Open Day for 2018 new enrolments will be held on Thursday 9th March 2017 at 9.30am to 10:30am and 1:45pm to 2:45pm in our multi-purpose area. Prospective new families for Kindergarten in 2018 as well as students Years 1 to Year 6 are invited to attend our Open Day. Enrolment packs will be available on the day or from the school office. Our fee schedule for 2017 is available to download from our website.

PROJECT COMPASSION DAY

On Friday Week 10, 31st March, Chisholm will be holding a Project Compassion Day run by the Social Justice leaders.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the situations in the countries where Caritas works. Classes will participate in various activities throughout the day to help them gain a better understanding of the work that Caritas does and why.

This will be a mufti day. Students are asked to please bring in a gold coin donation, which will support Project Compassion.

USERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA AT CHISHOLM CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

It is extremely important that all members of our school community are aware that a code of conduct must be followed when using social media to ensure that the dignity and comfort of all parties are preserved.

Respectful, meaningful, encouraging and productive comments and ideas are the best ones to share with others in a public forum.

School issues and concerns are best dealt with at their source and parents are strongly encouraged to see their child's teacher if they have any concerns or queries about any school related matters.

As safe, honest and respectful adults, and models to our children, it is essential that respect and decency to other parents, carers and the staff be shown at all times.

When used correctly and respectfully, social media can be a very handy communication tool and an excellent way to feel a part of the Chisholm Community.

Hills Zone Swimming Carnival Congratulations to the Chisholm team who competed last Monday at the Hills zone carnival at Windsor Oasis. Many students posted personal best times. Special mention to Charlotte Brown (3rd100m free, 4th backstroke and 4th IM) and Chelsea Privitera (4th 50m free). Both girls then backed up and competed at the Parramatta Diocesan swimming carnival at Blacktown on 24th February. A huge congratulation to the entire Chisholm community who assisted with the zone carnival that we hosted this year. Thank you to Bede Polding College and St Dominic’s College who provided students to assist on the day.

Cross Country Yr. 3-6 Thursday 16th March Volunteers required to assist on the day.

MacKillop Softball Trials Good luck to Abigail Saba, Jarred Ryan and Darcy Williams who will compete in the MacKillop Softball Trials in Sydney on Friday. We look forward to hearing your results.

Touch football managers Over the next couple of weeks, we will be trialling for the Chisholm Year 5 and 6 touch football teams. If you are available to assist, please contact Mrs Baxter through the school office.

BEDE POLDING COLLEGE YR 7 ENROLMENTS 2018

Enrolment Application forms for Year 7 2018 have been sent to all Year 6 students. Completed applications MUST be returned to the Bede Polding College Office no later than Friday 26 May 2017. NO applications will be accepted at the Chisholm School office. It is absolutely essential that families with children at Bede Polding ensure that they collect an enrolment form for siblings they wish to commence at Bede Polding in Year 7 2018. The school has no way of knowing that you wish to enrol a sibling unless you submit an application. School tours will be conducted during Catholic Schools Week (Monday 6 March to Friday 10 March 2017). If you wish to come to a tour of the College on Wednesday 8 March from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, please call the office to express your interest on 4577 6455.

Growth Mindset

“If you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve,” Debbie Millman

The above quote highlights what modern psychology knows about how belief systems about our own abilities and potential fuel our behaviour and predict our success.

One of the most basic beliefs we carry about ourselves has to do with how we view and inhabit what we consider to be our personality. A “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are static givens which we can’t change in any meaningful way. Striving for success and avoiding failure at all costs become a way of maintaining the sense of being smart or skilled. A “growth mindset,” on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities. Out of these two mindsets, which we manifest from a very early age, springs a great deal of our behaviour, our relationship with success and failure in both professional and personal contexts, and ultimately our capacity for happiness.

The following are some phrases you can use to encourage a Growth Mindset in your child. A simple change in the language we use can have a powerful effect and our children on a path towards success, not only at school, but in life.
