Riding season is upon us which has caused me to reflect upon all the things that keep us from enjoying a ride when we want to. Some are unavoidable: bad weather, family obliga-

tions, or work; but how many other things do we put before our own enjoy-ment? During the winter I dream of all the places I would like to go and the rides I would like to take, but by the time summer arrives there is grass to cut, obligations to fulfill and projects to complete. If you place your own needs and wants lower on the priority list than everything else, others will treat you the same way. The difficulty is in find-ing a balance between obligations we make to ourselves and to others. Buy-ing an expensive bike is a commitment made to enjoying ourselves; how-ever, if we don’t take the time to enjoy it, it becomes not only a bad invest-ment but also a source of anxiety and frustration. We long for the freedom of a good ride but at the same time we don’t allow ourselves that luxury……again a question of priorities and finding a good balance. This chapter is not just about riding. The Irish Diesel Fitter Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office. When asked his occupation, Paddy an-swered, 'Knicker Stitcher... I sew da elastic into ladies' knickers ..... The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay. Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, 'Diesel Fitter.' Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week. When Paddy found out he was furious. He stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was col-lecting double his pay. The clerk explained, 'Knicker Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled labour.' 'What skill?' yelled Paddy. 'I sew da elastic in da knickers, then Mick puts 'em over his head and says: ‘Yep ...diesel fitter.'

Rider Education: Harold Craven

Last Sunday, Sharon and I went on a road trip to Virginia. When we left the sun was shining brightly and the temps were in the low 60’s. Boy was it nice to have heated seats. The border was empty and we breezed through and straight down 81 to our first stop , Hazelton, Pennsylvania. Monday broke with rain and continued most of the day as we made our way to Waynesboro, Virginia. Tuesday morning was bright and clear as we travelled on a sweet little back road across the blue ridge over to highway 29 and down to the little town of Arrington. We were there to pick up our new trailer from California Side-car. We picked up our new escapade elite and while they were changing the plug on the back of the bike we had a tour of their plant. They had moved the plant from California to the east coast as this is where most of the business is. By 11am we were on our way for a nice ride home. We crossed the Blue Ridge again and picked up highway 250 running west over the mountains through George Washing-ton National forest then through the Monogahela National forest to highway 219 and headed north. This is a wonderful two lane highway that passes through many small towns and is nice and curvy. You are constantly changing gears on this highway. We ran through several showers along the way and stayed just off the highway near Grantsville, Mary-land. We started the day off in the rain suits again but by the time we were near DuBois we were able to take them off. Reaching highway 6 in Pennsylvania we headed east again over to highway 15 where we turned north once more up to the Corning area. The next day dawned nice and bright and we had a beau-tiful day riding north through the Finger Lakes up to the 1-90 then east to 1-81 and north to the border. Once again there was no one at the border and when we declared the trailer got to speak to customs. When I picked up the trailer I forgot to ask where the VIN was. The customs guy and I had a great time looking around for it and I finally called the factory to find out. We were no more than half an hour at the border and then off home. We had a great 5 days out on the road. Speaking about trailers, now that the warm weather has arrived people are thinking about trips and mak-ing sure your trailer is ready is a big part of it. It’s always a good idea to review your owner’s man-ual for proper tire inflation; what the tongue weight

should be; do your tires have enough tread, and are the bearings in good shape and properly greased. Have you hooked up and checked the lights, turn signals, chains etc. Have you gone to a local parking lot and prac-ticed turns and parking? Have you thought about taking a trailering course if you are new to trailering? GWRRA has a video on trailering

THE BRASS MONKEY

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.

There was only one problem....how to prevent the bot-tom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey; Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

HISTORICAL TRIVIA

If you were running a race, and you passed the person in 2nd place, what place would you be in now?

Finally, biking weather at last! We started the season with a bang, a ‘three hour tour’ to Denbeigh and back. Compliments to Dave Pattison. We wish to send condolences to Wendy & Les McGeachy on the loss of Wendy’s brother, someone gone much too soon. Our thoughts also go out to Don Hicks on the loss of his pet and longtime friend Buddy, who really will be ‘pushing up daisies’. May he rest happily in his flower bed. All seems well with other members; warm weather helps ease our aches and pains in all those old bones. Take care all and keep an eye on our Social Events and Ride Schedules—join in, its such, much, fun. Here’s a recipe for those warm summer days ahead!

It’s 7 am. I look out the window of the Terrace Motel in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania to see if there is any improvement in the weather since yesterday’s chilly ride. Cars go by raising clouds of mist as they pass. It is rain-ing. The weather guy on the TV says its 40 degrees. I want to go back to bed. I have agreed to meet up with some people from Randakk’s rally for the pre-rally ride somewhere near Peterstown Virginia which is a fair ride from here, so I put on every bit of clothing I have with me, wiggle into my rain suit and uncover the bike. I usually ride for pleasure, not penitence, but once in a while one must bite the bullet for the sake of better things to come, so I head off down route 220 trying to remember the last time I did this trip in brilliant sunshine. It’s hard to remember. By the time I reach Morris 20 miles down the road my gloves are soaked, my fingers numb and my ears are in the same condition. I stop at the general store and buy a pair of heavy cotton gloves and a toque. The gloves will still get wet but they are thick enough to provide a bit of insulation. At least my ears will be warm. At Lock Haven I stop at a restaurant for breakfast, (actually for warmth), and linger longer than I should. The rain eases up a bit so I press on. Damn. This is supposed to be fun. Oh, well…. the miles drift by too slowly, but by noon I am through the tail end of Maryland, and into West Virginia. Route 220 goes all the way to Covington VA and then swings east to Roanoke. It’s still a long way and I ride on and the familiar places along the road pass by unnoticed as I concentrate more on the wet road than on the scenery. Earlier this year I lost traction on a greasy wet curve and had to get help to lift the bike back out of the ditch, so I am still spooked by wet conditions. My brain tells me it’s ok to drive normally and my bruised ribs have healed, but my gut says I am about to die. Fortunately I stay alive till the rain stops. It actually becomes quite pleasant by the time I reach Moorefield. It’s still cool but at least my gloves are drying out. I stop to take a few pictures of the hills and bottomland farms. It’s hard to believe these hills were once as big as the Himalayas. But that was three hundred million years ago. Route 220 was not here then. Neither was the Human race. As I near the Virginia state line the temperature drops a bit, it has been hovering in the low 40’s all day, but the in-creasing altitude brings the thermometer down. At least it’s not raining now. It’s getting on in the afternoon and I pass a motel near the Virginia state line, I’m tempted to stop but my target for the day is Monterey, just a few miles into the state. So I head on south to get from West Virginia into Virginia. For some reason I ponder the absurdity of this for a while; funny how the mind works (mine anyway). At last I cruise into Monterey, a sleepy little place of about twenty houses, a gas station, an old restaurant and a Motel which I have used a number of times over the years. I am a bit surprised when the lady charges me 75 dollars for the night. It used to be 50 bucks but it’s early in the season and I guess they’re trying to get a head start on the years profits. I settle in for the night, but it’s quite chilly in my room so I go holler at the lady and she brings one of those electric heaters to boost the temperature a bit. It is a bit heavy for her and she turns her ankle on the stone walkway and falls with a crash, I help her up but she is ok, if somewhat embarrassed. By way of explanation for the cold she notes that the altitude here is four thousand feet and they sometimes get frost in June. I gas up the bike and stop at the restaurant for a nice warm supper. It may take the rest of the night to really warm up. Back at the motel I watch a rather discouraging weather forecast. I go to sleep dreaming of warmer weather.

We have also reserved a Hospitality Room at $65.00 plus tax per night with the cost to be equally shared among those participating. The final cost for this room will be dependent on the number of participants. Terry Archbold will cover the up-front cost and will collect the bal-ance in cash from each of us. This cost is very reasonable and will provide us with a party room that doesn’t interfere with bedrooms.

A block of 10 rooms has been reserved under the name “GoldWing Road Riders Association, or GWRRA’. The block will be held until Aug. 1.

Each participant will be responsible for booking their own room. Telephone Number: 888-229-2850

Facilities: Dining From the Orchard Restaurant to Mac's Tavern, you will find your fill of traditional inn fare. Our chef and dining staff look forward to serving you... breakfast, lunch and dinner! Their 6 page menu is on their website.
