SOCIAL EVENTS COORDINATORS: BARB PATTISON & JUDY ARCHBOLD

Hello all you Goldwing members, we had a busy August with the Norm Carr Memorial starting our events at the fairgrounds on the 8th. We would like our chapter to support the Quinte Children's foundation this year to make our chapter as an active participant in the community to support a necessary cause.

On August 9th our chapter BBQ was hosted by Ron and Ester Nowell. Thank you for supplying the exciting ride and the gorgeous location. Was also great to see some of our Kingston friends to share in some awesome food. August found us at Linguine's for a feast and the23rd was the monthly breakfast with Claude & Sally Lambert and Carl & Donna Ash joining us from the Kingston Chapter. As a result, our friend Sally won share the wealth.September 2nd to 6th will find several of our members at Wing Ding in Huntsville Alabama, along with several Kingston members. We hope everyone is doing well. We haven’t heard from Bob & Doris Hagerman so we hope that no news is good news. Remember to keep me in the loop about illness and news of family happiness. Again a big thank you goes out to Ron & Esther Nowell for hosting our BBQ. It was a great event. Soon it will be time for some of our members to ride off to Wing Ding. We wish you a safe ride and a fun time.Remember to keep track of all the events on our social calendar, a good chance to catch up and visit with friends. With September and apple season coming, here’s a recipe my kids loved on Sunday mornings.

Damascus is a pleasant little town on the Appalachian Trail, nestled in the mountains. We have trouble finding the road to the campground marked on the state map, so we stop at a tourist information station in the park. It is closed so we mount up again. I hit the starter and the wing lurches ahead against the

railing. It is in gear. The faulty neutral switch has finally given up, permitting the bike to start in gear. The next half minute is pure panic. The heavy starter current has fused the solenoid contacts and the starter will not stop. I hold the clutch in with my left hand and shut off the key to no avail; the starter keeps on churning. I yell at Do-ris to get off while I fumble for the Swiss army knife in my right pocket. I have to disconnect the battery cable but it is on the left side of the bike. I yell at Doris again to hold the clutch in so I can get the battery cover off, then use the screwdriver in the knife to unhook the cable. Suddenly all is silent. I stop yelling at Doris and ponder how to get out of this. There are no bike shops in Damascus.

In a few minutes I have loosened the saddlebags and moved them back a few inches, enough to get at the solenoid. Some of the locals come by to watch and chat while I remove the injured part. Doris says “we have company” as a police car pulls up beside us. It is the town cop, a young lad named Chuck. He advises us that there is a biker liv-ing a couple blocks away in case we need assistance. I thank him as I wallop the solenoid with a wrench to shake the contacts loose. A quick test with a jumper wire tells me that it is ok.

The sun has set as I finish re-assembling the Wing. We will be setting up our tent in the dark, if we ever find the campground. A station wagon pulls up beside us and a middle-aged woman gets out, curious about the red motor-cycle with Canadian plates. She is Alice McKee, the mayor of Damascus. When she learns of our situation regard-ing the camp ground she says“Why, you don’t have to sleep in a tent, you can stay at the hostel in town.” The town keeps a house for the benefit of Appalachian hikers: bunk beds with mattresses, a shower and a kitchen. Bring your own food and silverware. We decide to take her up on her offer, and ask Mrs. McKee about a restaurant. She says “Just follow me”. In a few minutes we park the bike at the hostel, then pile into the Mayor’s car for the trip to the restaurant a few blocks away. We spend an hour over the “best hamburgers in town” while we learn about Damascus from its first citi-zen While we chat the sound of fireworks echoes between the hills, an early start to the July Fourth celebrations. Fireworks are illegal in Virginia, Mrs. McKee is perturbed. “I must have a word with Chuck about this,” she mut-ters as we finish our coffee.

The Mayor delivers us back to the hostel and we part with gratitude. Inside there are a half dozen hikers from various parts of the country, eager to pass the time after a hard day’s travel. A box hangs on the wall under a sigh suggesting a donation of two dollars per person. I put in ten bucks. After exchanging pleasantries with our fellow travelers we find a vacant room and turn in. We will be at Wingding by tomorrow afternoon so we need to get up early. In a few minutes we are asleep.

Wingin’ It by Bob Hagerman

Today is a fine Day!Husband to wife – Today is a fine day. Next day he says: Today is a fine day. Again next day, he says same thing – Today is a fine day. Finally after a week, the wife can’t take it and asks her husband – since last week, you keep saying this “Today is a fine day’. I am fed up. What’s the matter?Husband: Last week when we had an argument, you said, “I will leave you one fine day.” I was just trying to re-mind you……"
