Who Says Scots Are Tight?A Scottish Soldier, in full dress uniform, marches into a pharmacy. Very carefully he opens his sporran and pulls out A neatly folded cotton bandana, unfolds it to reveal a smaller silk square handkerchief, which he also Unfolds - to reveal a condom. The condom has a number of patches on it.

The chemist holds it up and eyes it critically.

"How much to repair it?' The Scot asks the chemist.

"Sixpence" says the chemist.

"How much for a new one?"

"Tenpence" says the chemist.

The Scot painstakingly folds the condom into the Silk square handkerchief and the cotton bandana, replaces it carefully in his sporran, and marches out of the door, shoulders back and kilt swing-ing. A moment or two later the chemist hears a great shout go up outside, followed by an even greater shout.

The Scottish soldier marches back into the chemist's and addresses the proprietor, this time with a grin on his face. "The regiment has taken a vote”, he says. “We'll have a new one!"

From Riders Ed As Bob and Althea Berry remarked in their Insight article this month we are missing out on a great many opportunities to recruit new member by not wearing our GWRRA branded items when out for rides. We all complain about the prob-lems of recruiting new blood into the group but, how can we, when people don’t know who we are. Yes most of us wear our shirts and vests to our gather once a month, and at rallies, but what about the other times we are out. We go on rides either after the gather, other Sundays, Wednesday hooky rides, or, just when we are out on our bikes. We buy hats and t-shirts when be attend rally’s only to put them away in the drawer when we get home.We seem to be the only group who don’t wear our “Colours” First Cav, Blue Knights, Red Knights, Southern Cruisers, etc., all wear them so people know who they are. It is, for lack of a better word, “advertising”. Do we carry recruitment materials on our bikes if we meet a fellow winger on the road and they are not members? We know there are a lot of gold wings around the area because we see them in our travels. Wouldn’t it be nice if they knew there was a local organization they could join? Just a little something to think about during your travels this summer.Insight is a monthly newsletter put out by GWRRA available on their web site with articles by the Directors of the dif-ferent programs.

T he weather has been awesome, perfect for bike riding. Hope lots of you are taking advantage and putting many Km. on those bikes. The weather helps with our health too, no sniffles or flu to report, just maybe some allergies causing those tissues to be used.

Marilyne Hennek is home recuperating from her second knee replacement and we wish her a speedy recovery. Doris Hagerman is still pretty feeble but her operation is scheduled for a few weeks away so hopefully she’ll improve after that. We’re sending our condolences to Dave & Linda Lawrence on the passing of Dave’s mother. Our thoughts are with you.On a personal note, please take care this summer with the sun; use your sunscreen and keep an eye for any unusual spots; early de-tection is best. We hope everyone else is well and looking forward to a great summer with family and friends. Keep an eye on ourride & social calendars and join in the fun. That’s what we’re all about; riding, fun, and of course eating!Take care all. Here’s a recipe for a salad that should make a good addition to summer bar-b-ques.

One of my favourite acvies is checking out graveyards. Especially in places where people have lived for a few centuries. I seem to get a sense of history in an old family plot where the oldest stones are nearly unreadable from the relentless effects of weath-er. I once spent three hours at Anetam Creek checking every stone to see if by chance any of my ancestors might have parci-

pated ( however unsuccessfully ) in the bale. Doris was not with me on that occasion, so she was spared the boredom.

Leaving the motel in Lexington we wind up the hill to the cemetery. Stonewall Jackson is buried there, and as a long me student of the civil war I want to pay my respects to the famous General. (actually he was a school teacher on temporary assignment to the Confed-erate army, but got caught up in the excitement.) We arrive at the back of the cemetery where a maintenance crew is geng ready to do some grounds-keeping. I don’t see any parking lot at this end so I ask the guys if we can park the bike beside their truck. Besides, it is shady here and though it is sll early an hour in the sun will make the seat hot.

There are parcularly imaginave headstones in this cemetery, one shaped like a tree stump, carved from limestone or gray marble. In the back corner, the oldest part of the cemetery is somewhat overgrown; the grass is longer, the trees larger many stones leaning as their bases sele into the earth. The center piece is, of course, the Jackson Plot, bordered by an iron fence about twenty feet square, with a tall monument surrounded by smaller stones of family members.I lean on the fence reading the extensive engravings on the monument.

The sun is well over the Blue Ridge now and we need to get on the road, a brisk run before breakfast. It is only a few miles up route 11 to Steels Tavern, then on to Greenville (Yet another Greenville) and we pull into the Pink Cadillac. When biking in this area we oen plan our day around a stop at the Pink Cadillac for breakfast. There is a 1952 pink Cadillac parked (permanently) out front and entering the diner is to step back to the same year. Juke boxes on the tables and all. There is nothing like bacon and eggs aer an hours ride.

Aer breakfast it is noceably hoer, and we head up 11 to Harrisonburg, then to Newmarket. This is where, in 1864, an aging school-master at the Newmarket Military Academy mustered a company of twelve and fourteen year old students and marched them off to dobale with the Yanks. Ten of the boys were killed. Maybe next trip we will check out the Museum here, but today we need to make me. I change my mind a short me later when I see the sign poinng to Endless Caverns. It will be cool underground and I have not been in a cave in a few years so I cannot resist.

Virginia has several impressive cave systems, most in the Shenandoah Valley, and they are all worth seeing. Best to take a sweater, it is fiy degrees underground and the tour takes an hour or so. There is an automove museum on the same site, so aer the caves we spend another hour looking at the cars

Now we are running late, and it is nearly noon. I hate to do it, but I take the freeway north. We need to be in Pennsylvania tonight and I want to stop at Geysburg on the way. I wind the bike up a bit over the limit and check the speedometer. It reads zero. Rats. I made a point of lubing the cable before we le. We pass Winchester, where Doris lost her helmet last year (OK, where I lost Doris’ helmet last year) , on toward Hagerstown. There is a bike shop in Hagerstown, but they don’t have a cable for a 77 Goldwing. We head down route 40 to Frederick, We are back-tracking, but I don’t want to drive without my speed thermometer so we get off at another Honda shop and ask for a 77 cable. They don’t have one either but this guy has more on the ball than the last one, so he says he as one for an 1100 which is only an inch longer and will work fine. When I remove the old cable I see the problem. I lubed it with graphite powder. Guaran-teed neither to wear nor tear nor buckle at the knees graphite powder. But the cable had been previously lubed with grease, which mix-es with the graphite powder to form a cement-like substance which eventually became so thick that the cable twisted off. Lesson well learned. Giving up on making me we stop for lunch and relax for a bit, We are not far from Geysburg anyway, and we sll have three days to get home.
