A Letter from the Editor
The Wyverstone, Cotton & Bacton Yearbook is an annual publication containing advertisements from local businesses (mainly on the yellow pages) and information about all our local organisations, churches, local politicians and so on (on the white pages) as well as bus timetables and doctors’ surgery hours (on the green centre pages).
A large number of people deserve thanks for giving their time to the Yearbook. Amanda Hagger managed to find willing advertisers, Brian Manley has managed the accounts, Audrey Erbany has contributed her fabulous paintings and a huge number of volunteers have delivered this magazine to your door. Without such dedicated volunteers this Yearbook would never be produced.
Last year we raised about £800 which is being used to support the various Community Projects centred on the new facilities in St Mary’s Church. These will include a work club, a club for older teenagers, a drop in café and a club for carers. This year, even though we have more advertisers, we should raise about £650 which will also go to these projects. Our decline in profit this year is due to increased printing costs.
And if you would like to produce next year’s Yearbook, please get in touch. The more volunteers the better!
Best Wishes, Helen Thomson, 01449 781255, [email protected]

Mid Suffolk Central Safer Neighbourhood Team (MSC SNT)
Welcome to the Mid Suffolk Central Safer Neighbourhood Team. In Suffolk, Safer Neighbourhood Teams are made up of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Specials and Police Support Volunteers. We are here to help you, so please get in touch with us if you need our assistance.
Speed or Safety, Slow Down for Life The Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative allows members of the community to ad-dress the issue of speeding by becoming actively involved in road safety by monitoring speeds at safe locations with speed detection equipment. The aim of the CSW initiative is to address the problem of speeding through a partnership of the police the local com-munity, parish councils and other partners. The aim of the initiative is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible but:- to reduce speed in areas of concern; to make drivers aware that excessive speed is socially unacceptable; to re-educate drivers about the dangers of speeding; and to address concerns from local residents about cars speed-ing through their neighbourhoods. Where CSW has been implemented we can show a reduction in overall average speeds, and a significant reduction in drivers travelling well above the speed limit. If you are interested in starting up such a scheme then please contact a member of your Safer Neighbourhood Team for further details.

Local Churches
Church of England
St Mary’s Bacton, St Andrew’s Cotton and St George’s Wyverstone are part of the Bacton Benefice which also includes St. Andrew’s Wickham Skeith and St. Mary’s Old Newton with St. Nicholas’ Chapel, Gipping. Details of Services are published each month in the Parish News, and you are very welcome to join us at any of these services. Look out for special arrangements at Christmas, Easter, Rogation, Harvest and Remembrance Sunday. This is the usual pattern of worship:- Every Sunday in August, and also on the fifth Sunday in the month when there is one, there is a 10 a.m. Benefice Service at one of the churches – they take turns to host it. Otherwise: St Mary’s Bacton has a service at 9.30 a.m. every Sunday. On the first Sunday in the month, this is a family service and there is also an 8 a.m. Prayer Book Communion. On second, third and fourth Sundays it is a modern language Communion. St Andrew’s Cotton has 11 a.m. services on second Sundays (Morning Worship) and on fourth Sundays (Communion). St George’s Wyverstone has a 6.30 p.m. Praise in the Community on first Sundays, 11 a.m. Communion services on second and fourth Sundays, and an 11 a.m. Morning Service on third Sundays. Parents are welcome to bring their children for Baptism (Christening) at any service, or at other times by arrangement. Contact the Rector (or Curate) for details. Couples who would like to be married in one of our churches are also welcome to contact the Rector (or Curate). The Benefice holds 6 p.m. memorial services to remember departed loved ones on All Souls Day (Nov. 2
nd), during the run-up to Christmas, and on Mothering
Sunday and Fathers’ Day. Everyone is warmly invited to these short, informal services – children welcome. We work together with our Methodist friends and with Christians from other Churches to put on Messy Church and Taizé services from time to time – look out for posters. Housegroups and Bible study groups meet weekly during Lent and fortnightly at other times of year – see the Parish News for details. Do contact any member of the Ministry Team if you would like to ask for prayer for some particular need. We are always happy to bring Communion to house-bound parishioners in their own homes.

The Friends of Wyverstone Church was set up in 1999 to raise much needed funds to support the fabric of this much loved little church but we also like to think that we have fun along the way, our quarterly meetings are very informal. Our present project is to raise the £11,000 needed to repair the bell supports. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like to become a member or if you have any fund raising suggestions.. Helen Hardy (Chairman) E [email protected]
The Friends of St Mary’s, Bacton (Registered Charity No.1106579) was formed in 2004 to help raise the money necessary to keep the church in good repair, and would always welcome new members and ideas. If you would like to join us we normally meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month in the Church Community Room and our next AGM is on Thursday 7th June 2012.

A new much improved heating system has been installed too. There is room to seat about 65 people at tables, or more if the building is used theatre-style. The hall has full facilities for disabled people, including a cooker and sink suitable for wheelchair users. There is parking space for 15 cars. Hiring the hall still costs local people from just £5 an hour, plus in some cases, a returnable deposit against break-ages. The village hall is run by the village hall committee on behalf of the local commu-nity and is located in Church Road, opposite St. Mary’s Church. To book the hall please contact John Bean 01449 781343.

Bacton Bowls Club
If you want to have a go at bowling before committing yourself, you are welcome to come along and have a go at any of the open drives, where you will receive a warm welcome and advice on the rudiments of the game whilst taking part. For these drives suitable flat shoes, such as trainers, must be worn.
The club is affiliated to both EBA and EBF. We currently enter teams in 5 leagues - Stowmarket & District - 2 wood (Mondays), Tuesday afternoon 2 rink Triples and Thursday Triples; Suffolk Area D Triples on Tuesday and Ipswich EBA Triples on Wednesday. As well as the leagues noted above, we enter some competitions and have regular friendly fixtures. The green is one of the better ones in Suffolk, with the club being used as a neutral green for county and district quarter finals, playoffs, etc.
We are a friendly club of approximately 40-50 members with a well appointed clubhouse, including a recently modernised kitchen. Various social events, in-cluding BBQs and quizzes are held throughout the year. Subscriptions are very competitive with other clubs in the area. If you do not fancy bowling, you can always join as a social member and come to watch the bowling and attend the social events at discounted prices. We are seeking new members, especially younger ones, upon whom the future viability of the club depends. We are also willing to provide bowls training to newcomers. Applications to the Secretary, John Unwin (01449) 781125 or E [email protected], prospective new members are always welcome.
Wyverstone Carpet Bowls Club
The club meets throughout the year, every Wednesday evening 7.30pm-9.30pm at Wyverstone Village Hall. Newcomers can try out the game for 2 free sessions, then, if they decide to join, there is an initial joining fee of £5, followed by a £1 fee every week they play (50p for under 16s). Dress is casual, no special shoes required, and all play equipment is provided by the club.
We used to play in the Bury East Winter League, but, owing to falling membership numbers, have had to withdraw from the league, though we do still play friendly matches with many of the other clubs. Membership is open to all age groups, and we currently have a range from 10 years old to over 80 years! We are a friendly group, meeting for social as well as bowls practice purposes, and would love to increase our membership and re-join the league again. Please do come along and join us. Dress is casual, no special shoes are required and all equipment is provided. Once you have learned the game you will be hooked! Local History. Suffolk is fortunate in that there is a Local History Recorders Scheme which has been running for a number of years. The main purpose is to establish a network of people across the county (ideally one in each parish) to record the present and to be on the look-out for items of historical interest that may be overlooked and lost to future historians. These items do not just include the usual minutes books and manorial records but the full range of written and printed material such as (not an exhaustive list) letters, maps, accounts, diaries, title deeds, pamphlets, newspapers, catalogues, sports club records, business records, photographs, drawings, parish magazines etc, plus all kinds of printed ephemera such as leaflets, tickets etc; the list is endless. Eventually all material will end up in the County Record Office and will then be available to all present and future historians. If you should have any material/records/photographs etc which you no longer wish to retain please please please do not throw them out. Pass them on to your local history recorder: Wyverstone – Bill Blackaby 01359 242369 Bacton – Rose Graham 01449 780201 If you should have material relating to other Suffolk Parishes the details of the Local History Recorder can be obtained by contacting the Suffolk Local History Council: T 01473 254291 E [email protected] W www.slhc.org.uk

The W.I. is a national organisation created by women for women. Bacton & District W.I. meet in Bacton village hall, usually on the first Monday of the month, and we welcome any visitors who might want to come along and see what we are about. Our meetings usually begin with notifications of events, outings, forthcoming commitments and dates of our special- interest groups, i.e. Walking, Scrabble, Reading and Craft. There is always a talk or demonstration organised for us by our Programme Committee who try to make the calendar varied and interesting. In 2012 we plan to have a talk on Tudor costume by the advisor for the re-creations at Kentwell Hall and for all of us who have experienced culinary disasters there will be a ‘Cookery question time’ fielded by a local expert. At all our meetings delicious refreshments are provided by our members and there is ample opportunity to chat while we have our tea break. Outings are organised during the year and regular updates on our activities appear monthly in the Parish Magazine. There are opportunities for all members to attend conferences, courses and social occasions and we try to be involved in village events as well as organising some ourselves. The W.I. has its own adult education college in Oxfordshire which has many interesting courses on a variety of subjects. We have a Bursary scheme which enables one member each year to attend a course at Denman College. Remember you are welcome at any of our meetings so please look out for posters or contact Amanda Manley on 01449 781595.

The members of Stowmarket and District Lions Club are proud to be a part of the world’s largest service organi-sation. Lions Clubs International was formed in the United States in 1917. The organisation reached the United King-dom in 1950 and sustained growth now sees 1,350,000 Lions Club members active in 45,000 clubs in no fewer than 206 countries.
All clubs throughout the world share the same ethic as in our motto – ‘We Serve’. Our work is to help those less fortunate than ourselves with financial and practical help. This takes many forms beyond the simple rais-ing of money and writing of cheques.
The Stowmarket club has a strength of 43 members, making it the 9th largest
club in the UK and Ireland, no mean achievement for an area of such modest population density.
Last year in Stowmarket we raised over £35,000 for our charity and activity ac-counts as well as offering practical help where it’s needed. We have many regu-lar activities that have become well known locally. These include the Sports-man’s Dinner, our annual charity shop, boxing night, Santa sleigh and, more recently, a rapidly growing bike ride through Suffolk’s beautiful villages. We all meet together once a month for a business meeting to organise our work. In ad-dition, there are always others of us meeting in small groups in between to work on particular matters.
The organisation and execution of these charitable events is evenly matched by a lively social calendar which sees at least one event each month. These enable the club to go to places and experience things that are very difficult to achieve as individuals or pairs. No fewer than nine of our number have been members of the club since the very beginning such is the strength of the fellowship that has developed. If you think that you have anything to offer the club then please E [email protected] ~ www.stowlions.org.uk or contact Tony Wass on 01449 678223

The Wyverstone Community Café is normally held every other Saturday at Wyverstone Village hall, 10am - 12.30. Come along and enjoy home-made refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. We also have a local produce market, where small-scale food and craft producers sell their wares. Locally grown pork and lamb, jams and chutneys and organically produced eggs are always available, as well as seasonal vegetables and fruit grown in the village. Run by Liz and Andy Mellen, the aim of this initiative is to shorten the distance our food travels from field to fork, helping to make food production more sustainable. The café is also an excellent chance to catch up with friends, read the papers, or find a book at the community book exchange. More information and dates for the café can be found at www.wyverstonecafe.co.uk or in the parish newsletter. Dates for the Community cafe: 2011:- Sat. 26th November, Sat.17th December 2012:- Sat. 21st January and then fortnightly through the year

Carter’s Meadow Trust (Cotton) looks after a piece of land that was bequeathed to the village in the 1990s. The Trust is trying to develop the land in such a way as to encourage local flora and fauna and also to establish species that have been lost from the locality while, at the same time, encouraging its use as a recreational amenity for the community. A Work Party takes place the first Sunday of each month. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact Chris Tester on 01449 782134 or E [email protected]

Neighbour scheme in Cotton, Wyverstone & Bacton. We are, of course,
aware that there are already many in our community who act as, and benefit
from, good neighbours. But there are areas where the Good Neighbour
Scheme could assist, ranging from collection of prescriptions, transport to the
Optician’s, occasional shopping or even changing a light bulb. All neighbourly
deeds under the scheme will be offered free of charge except for providing
transport when a small charge will be made. If you would like help, or would
like to volunteer to help, please phone Hilary Smith 781845
