“Remember, remember the 5th of November.” Of all of the months of the year, November is one where we step back for a few minutes and remember. As well as Guy Fawkes, and much more significantly, we also remember those who have fallen in wars. For many years it seemed that war was thankfully so far removed from our everyday lives that perhaps we might have wondered why we needed the call to remember each year. But with war in Afghanistan and soldiers giving their lives every week, we are all too aware of the reality of war. So this year on Sunday 11th at 11am we will again remember the fallen.
This summer we spent a few days touring the Commonwealth War Graves of Northern France. We know from the history of our own house, Crib Cottage (formerly Ducks Eye), that the owner at the turn of the last century, local Bacton resident George Austin, had a son, Private George Austin of the Royal Garrison Artillery and the Royal Marine Labour Corps, who fought in WW1. George lost his life in September 1917, leaving a widow Mary Ann, and is buried in the Calais Southern Cemetery pictured on the cover.
Our own war memorials commemorate so many from such small villages who bravely gave their lives in The Great War and WW2. We would love to see a project to tell the stories of the men of Bacton, Cotton and Wyverstone especially as so many of the men honoured on the memorials have family still living in or around the area. Perhaps in 2014, when it will be 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War, we can realise this opportunity to remember personally those long since gone from among us? Andrew and Amanda Grant
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them".

It has been a while since we had an entry in the Parish Magazine and thought it was time we let you all know what is happening here at Bacton Under Fives! Well, summer came and went and we are now enjoying all that Autumn has to offer with lovely walks to collect leaves, acorns and such like. This term our rooms are busy one’s, particularly in the mornings. If anyone requires daycare of any kind for any age from 0 to 5 please call us or email us to have a chat. Telephone 01449 780079 or email [email protected] are still running our Toddler group every other Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 at The Playcentre. On the alternate Tuesday we run another session called ‘0 til Walk’ at the same times – please come along or call for more details. Both sessions offer great opportunities for both the child and the adult.A DATE FOR YOUR DIARIES – we are holding our second CHRISTMAS MARKET on FRIDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2012 from 5:30 to 8:30. There will be a selection of stalls offering a variety of goods to buy for all your Christmas needs. Stalls will be in the Primary School and at the Playcentre. Refreshments will also be available at the Playcentre so please do come and support this event. If anyone would like a stall please telephone us on 01449 780079 or email us at [email protected]. A warm welcome awaits all. After the half term holidays we will be running another popular session for
younger children and their parent/carer. This is being run by IMPS (Rachel Baker) who has run other fantastic sessions with us before. This time it is called ‘TIDDLERS’ (ideally for those who are just walking but under 3). Sessions will be on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00pm to 2:00pm starting on 14th November. The course runs for 5 weeks and there is a charge for this to cover the costs but the sessions are worth every penny – they are fun-filled and children thoroughly enjoy them (almost as much as the adults!). Places are limited so to book a place please call or email us. The children are busy learning their songs for our annual concert to be held in December. This is always a success along with the usual hiccups that make it all the more fun and more memorable.

Just Gardening This is the time of the year when the evenings are drawing in. The leaves have started to fall. I've expected an early Autumn this year after the unusual summer we've had. There might be one last cutting of the lawn this year. When you have finished with the lawnmower give it a good clean and oiling. Don't forget to give the underside a good clean as well, wet grass left on the underside of a lawnmower will rust all the metal parts. Spray all the moving parts with WD40, you will be surprised how bright it all looks. Then it will be a pleasure getting it out for service next season. The same for all the other tools. when you've finished with them, for the season, give them a wipe and a spray all over.I try to clear the fallen leaves each day off the lawn. It helps prevent a major task if you leave it until all the leaves have fallen. Put the leaves in black sacks and let them decompose, then they can be added to your compost heaps. Layering of leaf compost in your compost bins gives a good structure and will help improve the soil when you dig it in next year. I don't put Magnolia leaves, Laurel leaves. Oak leaves or Holly leaves in my compost, they just don't break down, put those on the fire and use the ash on the ground.Give your Privet hedges a last light trim. Trim all the dead heads off the Hebe's. I pick all the dead leaves of my Rhododendrons. Any twigs or debris, pick it up and get rid of it. It can cause disease and detracts from the tidy look to the garden. If you have a vegetable section in your garden, most of your produce will have been lifted by now. As you go, roughly turn the soil over in large clumps and leave it for the winter weather to help break down the soil for next spring. Then you will be able to rake the soil over into a fine tilth ready for next years planting. All your spring bulbs should be planted by now. As a rough rule of thumb I always look at a bulb and try to plant the bulb about twice the depth of the bulb itself. If they are large bulbs I might even consider planting about three times the size of the bulb.I've given my roses a prune and I've given them an Autumn feed just so there is some nourishment in the ground for them. In addition to that, this year I have put a layer of attractive tree bark on my rose beds acting as a mulch. Next year it will stop the weeds coming through and keep moisture in the ground. Happy Gardening............Norman Parcell

They are referred to the Food Bank by local organisations e.g. Children’s Centres, Doctors, CAB. Please, can you help us?1. WYVERSTONECARPET BOWLS CLUB
Wyverstone Carpet Bowls Club held its AGM on 5th September 2012, which sixteen members attended, to elect the new committee and discuss events of the past year. Our Chairlady, Julia Hurley, welcomed the four new members who have joined the club in 2012, and we remembered with sadness the passing of Dennis James and Andy Kemp. The Club has regular weekly practice sessions, when all enjoy the game and the social atmosphere of the club. We also play Friendly Matches with other local clubs, both home and away, making new friends in a relaxed social atmosphere. We all agreed to continue playing “Friendlies” with other clubs, to maintain contact and keep up with friendships made over the years. We will aim to have one home and one away match with several other local clubs over the winter months of 2012/13. We also agreed, by majority vote, that this year we will prepare a Christmas buffet in Wyverstone Village Hall, with homemade desserts to follow! All members, playing or non-playing, and their partners and families will be welcome. We really do feel that this club is a very important part of village life, not just f o r Wy ve r s t o n e , b u t f o r t h e surrounding villages as well. We currently have members from both Wyverstone and Bacton, and would welcome new members from these and other villages too.Members of all ages are welcome, and our practice nights
are ever y Wednesday evening , throughout the year, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Wyverstone Village Hall. Please do come along and join us – dress is casual, no special shoes are required, and all equipment is provided. Once you have learnt the game, you’ll be hooked! This young company with its competent, talented actors kept us all enthralled especially Alice Mottram who played Miss Stapleton, Mr Barrymore and Mortimer. This is a young lady to watch out for, she excels at her craft. Well done to Mark Finbow, actor, director/adaptor and fellow actors Marcos Houden, Benjamin Wilmot. We look forward to their next production at Cotton Church at Christmas.

In recent years we have been in the habit of booking a local Pub or Restaurant for our Annual Birthday Party, but this year we decided to stay closer to home and gathered in Bacton Village Hall. With the new, stylish chairs and recently installed 'moody' lighting system, we were all set for an evening full of party atmosphere. We welcomed two Guests, our area advisor Andrea Davies, and Gillian Slaughter, vice c h a i r m a n o f S u f f o l k E a s t Federation. Our guest Speaker was Rachel Sloane from Radio Suffolk, and we welcomed a visitor in the form of our Rector Liz Varley. The hall was decorated with bunting for the party by myself and volunteers from the committee, and our thanks go to Angela Jenner’s husband, Graham, who turned up to give us some valuable assistance with the heavier work. Rosy Black provided Candelabra and beautiful flower arrangements for the tables and Angela Cook organised the catering, so our grateful thanks go to them and to all our volunteer helpers, (not forgetting washers up of glasses at the end), for their hard work.It was an enjoyable evening full of camaraderie and incident. Gillian Slaughter had come to present the Rose Bowl to Bacton and District W.I. for a winning entry in the
Suffolk Show competit ions this year. The c o m p e t i t i o n was to design a p o s t e r t o promote the W.I. and our winning poster will be used by SEFWI in future publicity. Our Speaker entertained us with anecdotes on the theme of 'Mad Moments and Moral Dilemmas' and we were provided with a delicious hot meal by our caterer Andrea Davey. Andrea and her staff were efficient throughout and left the kitchen in a spotless condition! Flush with success we fear we may have to hold our annual Birthday Party in the Village Hall for many more years to come.
Our next meeting is our Annual Meeting on Monday November 5th. After we have decided on our Committee and President for 2013 our speaker, Peter Banham, will give a talk on ‘Old Sayings and their Origins’.
Visitors are welcome at £2 per session and can join us for three sessions before being required to join. Amanda ManleyPresident of Bacton & District W.I.

Most of you will know that the Parish Magazine was edited for many years by Terry Spalding who, sadly, passed away this year. We were very fortunate that Helen Thomson, an IT expert in Bacton, agreed to take on the production of the magazine at the end of 2011. Helen and her team of volunteer ‘Guest editors’ proceeded to take the magazine into the ‘digital age’. However, Helen never intended this to be a long term project for herself and the PCC has recently been able to form an editorial team to take it off her hands. A big thank you is due to Helen for all her hard work so far.
Your new editorial team.......Linda Last - editor/advertising
[email protected] Manley - editor/production
[email protected] Manley - editor/layout and
design [email protected]
Currently the deadline for contributions will still be the 15th of the month.
However, please note the deadline for the January magazine will be
the 10th of Decemberbecause of
the Christmas Holiday.
(See page 61 for more information on advertising issues)
We hope to carry the magazine forward building on the good work begun by Helen. Since the October issue the new team have been in p lace and wi l l produce the magazine on a permanent basis. There may be some changes as we go along and we hope these willbe for the better but we invite you to let us know what you think. Finally, an invitation to everyone in Bacton, Cotton or WyverstoneIf you have a Picture/Photograph you would like to see on the front cover and can provide a letter on the same theme for page 5 (Up to 430 words), please get in touch with us. 2012 is already covered but we are keen to give everyone the chance to get involved and can let you know which months are available in 2013.

CHURCH NEWS
A Word from the CurateThe First Birthday of the Community Room, St Mary’s ChurchThe celebrations began on Friday 12th October with a finger buffet lunch for representatives from the three villages, funding providers and groups who have used the Community Rooms regularly during the past year. At the end of the lunch we were joined by children from Bacton Under-Fives, Bacton Community Primary School and Bacton Community Middle School, who helped to cut a celebration cake, kindly made for us by Michelle Macausland. Some of the children thought it was a bit strange to be singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to a room, not a person! On the Saturday, a Village Art Show was held in the church and community rooms from 10 am – 4 pm. This included exhibitions from adults and children, and so many visitors commented on how many talented artists we have here, not to mention the budding artists in the Under 5s, schools, Rainbows, Brownies and Scouts! There were delicious refreshments and cakes on sale in the Community Room, mini Messy Church in the Chill-out area, and a Raffle, Book Swap and Art Exhibition in the church. In the afternoon we were treated to two performances from the Open the Book Team who go into the Primary school once a fortnight to tell Bible stories during assembly. In the first story we met Jonah the groaner who was swallowed up by a very realistic looking whale, and the second story featured a giant –sized Goliath who was taken on by a young shepherd boy called David – and lost! It was a wonderful day, and it was lovely to see so many people enjoying the art work, and relaxing for tea, cakes and chat, while the children joined in with craft activities in the Chill -out area.I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to all the people who helped to make this such a special celebration. We estimate that nearly 200 people came through the doors over the two days, so it’s not possible to mention you all by name. However, I would like to thank all those who contributed art work, set up the exhibition, donated items for the raffle, cooked food for the lunch, provided cakes and biscuits to sell, served refreshments, sold raffle tickets and generally helped in so many ways over the two days. Thank you also to our Open the Book Team for working so hard to put on their performance. It just goes to show what can be achieved when the whole community comes together, and I hope that the use of the community rooms will go from strength to strength in the coming year. With best wishes, Julia

There’ll be all the usual attractions on the stalls: cakes, books, toys and games, bottles, gifts, bric a brac, CDs/DVDs, and fun with competitions and a super raffle. While we’re open, refreshments will be available from the kitchen including hot drinks, bacon rolls and delicious light lunches. We do hope that we’ll see you there. The Bazaar is a good place to look for a bargain in this month when we’ll all be thinking about Christmas preparations and choosing cards and presents for those close to our hearts even if they are far away around the world. November is also the month for remembering in prayer those close to our hearts who have gone before us and especially on Remembrance Sunday all the millions of people who gave their lives for our freedom in the World Wars and other conflicts of the past century. On All Saints’ Day, Thursday 1st November, we celebrate all the saints without number who await us with love and prayer around the Throne of God. Then on All Souls’ Day, Friday 2nd November, we commemorate all the Faithful Departed and continue remember them in our prayers throughout the month which we dedicate to their memory. JUNIOR CHURCH
REMEMBRANCERelease by Colwyn Philipps
There is a healing magic in the night,The breeze blows cleaner than it did by day,
Forgot the fever of the fuller light,And sorrow sinks insensibly away
As if some saint a cool white hand did layUpon the brow, and calm the restless brain
The moon looks down with pale unpassioned ray –Sufficient for the hour is its pain.
Be still and feel the night that hides away earth’s strain
Be still and loose the sense of God in you,Be still and send your soul into the all,
The vasty distance where the stars shine blue,No longer antlike on the earth to crawl.
Released from time and sense of great or small,Float on the pinions of the Night-Queen’s wings;
Soar till the swift inevitable fallWill drag you back into all the world’s small things;
Yet for an hour be one with all escaped things.
Colwyn Philipps died at the Second Battle of Ypres, aged 27

I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the people of Suffolk as they reach into their pockets to help those less fortunate than themselves. This summer Red Cross week raised a tremendous £10,000 from collections across the county and a further £ 1 0 , 0 0 0 w a s r a i s e d b y t h e Suffolk Open Gardens. This £20,000 will be spent on providing services for vulnerable people across Suf fo lk . One such ser v ice i s the medical equipment loan service which has outlets across the county. Medical equipment loans are provided for up to three months and are free of charge, delivery is available in some areas for a small fee. You can borrow items such as wheelchairs, commodes, and walking aids. (The American paralympic team borrowed 20 shower stools for their wheelchair athletes during their recent stay at Lakenheath Air Base!)
To find your nearest medicalequipment loan outlet call 01284 727252, or for the Lowestoft area call0845 054 7181
Coming up we have Operation Gunpowder in Haverhill. Operation Gunpowder is a proactive service where Red Cross staff and volunteers, together with other community agencies, visit vulnerable people likely to be intimidated by antisocial behaviour during the high jinks of Bonfire Night and Halloween. This
service not only provides on-the-spot practical help and support but also identifies and follows up longer term needs. The success of our fundraising is down to the kindness and support of local people like you. We are currently p l a n n i n g o u r O p e n G a r d e n programme for 2013 and are looking for more gorgeous gardens to open and delight the visiting public. If you know of a secret garden (or street, or whole village) that you think would be suitable, or like the idea of helping at an Open Garden near you (putting up signs, baking cakes, stewarding the gate etc) please let me know. A couple of hours of your time can make a real difference to people's lives.Jane Dow Senior Community Fundraiser
