Golden Times would like to thank the Hastings Printing Company for the excellent service they have provided, enabling us to bring you a great magazine. www.hastings-print.co.uk

H ello and welcome to the summer 2013 edition of Golden Times. The first thing I must do is

to apologise to everyone (and there were a lot of you) who entered the "Aquaria" competition in the previous magazine. Due to unforseen circumstances, the production company behind the show cancelled the June and July dates meaning the show didn't arrive at the White Rock Theatre. We do however have another competition for this issue, to win tickets to the fantastic "Save the last dance for me" show at the White Rock Theatre in September. Everyone who entered the Aquaria competition will automatically be entered into the draw for this prize! You can find out more about the show on the back page and more about the competition on page 20.

I hope you'll all enjoy this edition of Golden Times and good luck to all of you entering the competition!

In my last column I extolled the virtues of the very lovely island of Rarotonga which is the most densely populated of the Cook Islands. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 week stay there, and it was only because my next stop was Auckland, New Zealand that I was able to tear myself away. However, the day before I was due to depart I decided to hire a scooter, and have a final tour of the island. In order to hire the scooter I first had to go to the local police station, and purchase a local driving permit. This cost $NZ 10 and as it would normally have lasted for the duration of my stay I thought it was quite reasonable especially as at that time the exchange rate was $NZ 3:35 to the pound!! It may never be that good again! On my farewell tour of the island I stopped off to say cheerio to the two young ladies who had set up their internet cafe, and which I had visited on my first full day on Rarotonga. They had, by then, finished the painting of the outside of the building, and the place was looking quite pristine. I sometimes wonder how their business has prospered after all these years. The following day at the airport, while waiting for my plane to Auckland, I found myself thinking about the first time I decided to take myself off on this trip. Although I had travelled extensively in the past, mainly due to my army service, I was a little apprehensive about backpacking in an unfamiliar part of the world, but grabbing the bull by the horns I started to put a plan together. When I was about to set out on my Pacific travels I remembered the advice of my old Sgt. Major: Take what you like but remember who's carrying it!! This meant that at all times I was travelling light, and in most places where I stayed I could hand wash my gear and let it dry overnight. Because I was travelling on a budget this meant that I was grateful for the convenience of the accommodation bureau's where I was able to scan what was available within my means. Whenever backpacking you cannot afford the luxury of being met by a representative from your selected accommodation, but you have the freedom to choose the roof over your head, and if it is disappointing, you have the freedom to change it. I enjoy the whole concept of backpacking as it seems to bring out the gypsy in my soul. A place has to be very special to lure me back more than once as there are still a lot of fascinating places on this planet to see, and if I visited a country or particular resort too many times I would become very bored. I will sign off now, and in the next issue I shall be writing about my trip to New Zealand so until then watch how you go, stay healthy, and enjoy living......Frank.

“Press 1 for this, 2 for that and 3 for something else”, isn’t it annoying that nowadays it seems you cannot make a phone call without being faced with menu upon menu just to get through to someone who then has to “transfer your call to a colleague”?

That is why it came as a pleasant surprise when we called Travel Insured to find out about travel insurance for our readership. We got straight through to a knowledgeable person who was able to answer all our questions clearly. And we understand it’s not just us who find Travel Insured very easy to deal with. They have provided us with a number of testimonials, three of which we detail here:

“All hassle-free!” Mrs JC of Hastings

“Great job as always and a pleasure to work with you. Thanks so much for your speedy sorting out of my new policy – and for securing me a better deal!” Miss KLP of Tunbridge Wells

“Thanks for the ‘no fuss’ and prompt service” Mr AS of St Leonards-on-Sea

The very best bit is that Travel Insured are local, they’re the specialist side of Manor Insurance in Hastings. And they offer cover for people with medical difficulties as well. Definitely worth calling next time you’re booking a holiday.

The Golden Times staff count themselves satisfied customers of Travel Insured, using their European Family insurance for a recent holiday and covering Frank on his recent trip to Thailand. We've found them to be very helpful and competitively priced.

A little computer knowledgecan make a big difference.

‘KEEP TAKING THE TABLETS!Tablet computers such as iPads are becoming increasingly popular. Without the additional accessories like a keyboard or mouse, a Tablet with its built-in camera and speakers takes up far less space than a conventional computer. Tablets are designed to be intuitive. Navigating and viewing information – such as zooming in on text or pictures or scrolling down a page – is as simple as swiping your fingers over the screen. Typing is done via a touchscreen keyboard. From one device you can send emails, listen to music, watch films, surf the internet, call friends and family, take and edit photos, shop and do your banking online.App-tly namedTablets are often faster than traditional computers and they benefit from specially designed applications, called ‘apps’, which can be downloaded from the internet and will make your tablet even more useful. The saying goes that there is an app for everything. Some are free, others you’ll have to buy. Most retailers like Ocado and John Lewis have their own official apps, meaning that ordering groceries online is quick and easy.Apps like BBC iPlayer allow you to catch up on your favourite TV shows, while Cookery apps from Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson include video tutorials. Puzzle apps like Sudoku will keep you amused for hours!Getting StartedEase yourself in by getting used to the swiping, pinching and zooming motions on the screen. Then familiarise yourself with the pre-loaded apps. It’s best to start with the internet browser. Above all, concentrate on what interests you the most and have fun. This is how you will really get the most out of the device.Neil Duncan is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in Hastings and the surrounding area, offering at-home computer and internet skills tuition for the over 50s and beginners. Top Retirement TipsBy Tony Nelson-DipPFS .

‘Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today’- proverb

What sort of retirement can YOU look forward to? It’s all down to your own preparation and affordability. Here are ten things to consider to help you to plan. Whilst it’s not just about wealth, money does play an important part in planning the retirement of your dreams.

1. Write down a plan of how, when and where you would like to retire and hold onto it.

2. Start saving consistently, as soon as possible.

3. Consider paying off your debts.

4. Begin to develop new skills and interests.

5. Decide what percentage of salary you wish to retire on and calculate how much retirement might cost you.

6. Ask yourself: “what will my present funding achieve when I actually retire?"

7. Look at any shortfall and take steps to close the gap.

8. Consider pension plans funded by your employer.

9. Assess what level of risk you are prepared to take in funding your dreams.

10. Consult a professional financial adviser to help you plan your retirement.

For more information on Retirement, please contact Tony on 01903 532583 or [email protected]

Are you worried about having to sell your home to pay for care costs?Over 50,000 homes were sold in the last year for that reason but it can be easily avoided.

Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?- Are you one of the 27 million people in this country who hasn't made a will ?- Are you one of those who made a will a long time ago and hasn't reviewed it recently?- Have you or your partner got step children or adopted children?- Are you worried about who will make decisions for you if you become incapable of making them for yourself?- Do any of your family get means-tested benefits?- Are you concerned about how your children deal with money?

If you answered yes to any one of these questions then a consultation with David Cowley of Collective Legal Solutions could put your mind at rest. Why not contact him now for your free, no obligation consultation at a

time of your choosing, including evenings and weekends, in your own home?

It's not too late to put it right. Talk to David NOW about your options.

Is it possible to survive the devastating impact of Infidelity?

I have been counselling couples over a period of many years and can appreciate that the discovery of a spouse's unfaithfulness is one of the most painful experiences to have to deal with in a relationship. It is in fact very much like bereavement as there is so much potential for experiencing loss, loss of a future together, loss of trust and loss of self-worth. A period of mourning may follow for the loss of the relationship that was and now will be forever changed by the affair.

Difficulties in the way you relate and communicate with each other are the most common causes of infidelity. There may be the temptation to argue and squabble in the aftermath but this will probably result in you both being self-justifying and will prevent you from resolving anything.

Talking about why the affair happened is not an easy task but it will help considerably if the unfaithful partner is prepared to answer any questions regarding the affair that the betrayed partner asks. Although this can be a very painful and emotional process for both of you it is important that you both understand why this affair has happened. Rebuilding the trust that has been broken will take considerable time, it

requires honesty, patience and a lot of hard work in order to move forward and secure a new future together.

An affair does not have to mean the end of your relationship; it is possible to come through this crisis together. Whatever your decision about the future, it is really important to gain some insight as to what went wrong and thereby have a deeper understanding of how you can avoid repeating past mistakes.

If you would like to find out more about the counselling Julia offers then please take a look at her website www.juliameanwellcounselling.co.uk she can be contacted by email [email protected] or give her a call on 07714 280083.

Sister Kathy dons hard hat for retirement building projectA fresh approach to retirement livingHoly Cross Priory is a new and unique retirement community with 40 luxury apartments, in a tranquil countryside setting near Heathfield in East Sussex. Its services, impressive accommodation and facilities are designed for people of retirement age (with any or no religious beliefs). The building project has been led by Sister Kathy Yeeles, who donned her hard hat and yellow fluorescent jacket over her habit. This lady can hold her own in the world of construction! The Sisters of Grace and Compassion Benedictines have owned a Grade-ll listed Priory building, that has been a residential home for the elderly, since the 1960s. The site has now been transformed into a retirement community.

There are 20 stunning 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in a Grade-ll listed Priory building and 20 new build apartments. The spacious and fully accessible accommodation has been finished to a very high specification. As well as independent retirement living, you have the option of a genuine, compassionate and personal care service in the comfort of your own home. There is a restaurant, library, shop, croquet and bowls lawns, a variety of clubs, allotments, hair salon, function room, guest suite and more.

Holy Cross is different to anywhere else. There are no sales agents or shareholders to please. Holy Cross is totally independent and run by the people who work there, for the benefit of the community. You can get involved in how things run if you wish.

La Bella FiguraI was recently in Italy and spent the day with a girlfriend having lunch in one of our favourite restaurants. Whenever I visit Italy, we always treat ourselves to a posh lunch. We dress up and go to lovely places where we discuss life and love, giggle a lot and allow the gorgeous waiters to treat us like royalty. It was a lovely day so, after a delightful lunch and excellent bottle of local wine, we strolled around the lovely town of Ortono. We wandered past the beautiful old castle and, to our amazement, it was open. (In small Italian towns, opening hours seem to be

totally arbitrary, and you often have to ask for attractions to be opened specially for you.) Having explored the castle grounds and taken the obligatory photos, we discovered a small exhibition of photographs and paintings with some fascinating historical scenes. A rather bored woman sat behind a desk and watched us as we chatted and discussed the photos. As we turned to leave she called us over. She talked in the local dialect but we managed to understand she was praising our "look". She admired our clothes and shoes and continually used the phrase "bella figura". This, we knew, was praise indeed but were not quite sure exactly what it meant. Nevertheless we left feeling very pleased with ourselves. The next day I researched "La Bella Figura" and was fascinated to find it meant so much more than just looking good. The concept of bella figura, of making a good impression, underpins nearly every aspect of Italian society. It starts with the physical and superficial but goes beyond. It governs

behaviour, language, and customs. It dictates how business is done and how relationships are managed. Historically it defined family loyalty and honour. Today it means showing your best side, putting your best foot forward, not just physically but in every way you present yourself to the world. Style-wise it doesn’t mean spending a fortune on clothes, make-up and jewellery. It is being selective, choosing quality over quantity and ensuring the total ensemble looks fabulous. It means making the world more wonderful just because you are in it. Italian women often look like they have spent weeks getting ready but, of course, practice makes perfect and when it's in your DNA and you do it every day it's easy. So I am practicing hard and I hope to achieve their standard of style in around 300 years! MichèleWant to find out more? "Making Hay" by Glenda LockThe phone was ringing. Maggie reached out a feeble hand from under the duvet and picked it up. “Hello?” she croaked. “Oh hello Maggie, it’s Jean. I just wanted to let you know I’m back and to thank you for all your hard work. The house is like a new pin. I was expecting it to be an absolute tip leaving George to fend for himself. You know how helpless he is. Couldn’t organise a lettuce. So I knew you must have been coming over to keep him straight. Not an un-ironed shirt in the place, and you’ve even washed the sheets. What an angel you are! Thank you.”Maggie was struggling to clear her head. “Oh – um – yes. I – er. Yes, glad you’re home. How was your mother?” she mumbled.“Miserable as always,” Jean replied. “You wouldn’t believe the fuss she made. Anyone would think she’d had a heart transplant instead of a bunion removed. And then, of course, the stupid wound got infected and I had to stay an extra week. I’m sorry you had to hold the fort for so long.”“I – um - didn’t notice the time passing. I’ve – er – been …..” Maggie’s reply was cut short.“ I know, you’ve been very busy by the look of things,” Jean cut in. “Anyway, I won’t keep you now. Thanks again.” The line went dead. Maggie lay for a few minutes trying to digest what Jean had been saying. Her head was throbbing and her mind felt as though it was full of cotton wool. Jean had been thanking her for something but she couldn’t work out what it was. Something to do with bunions. She looked at her alarm clock. Nearly noon. She really must try to get up. She desperately wanted a cup of tea and – for the first time in days – something to eat. As she waited for the kettle to boil Maggie continued to puzzle over the phone call. Something wasn’t right. Jean had mentioned ironing and housework. What was she talking about? Maggie picked up her tea and toast and shuffled back to bed. The snack made her feel a bit better and she started to think more clearly. Not wanting to make a fool of herself by checking back with Jean she decided to ring Jean’s next door neighbour, Frances. After exchanging greetings Maggie told her friend about Jean’s phone call. “I think she was thanking me for looking after George while she was away,” Maggie said, “but she should have been thanking you, shouldn’t she?”

“Oh we heard the vacuum cleaner going every morning,” Frances remarked, “and I said to Tony that it must be you doing your neighbourly duty. Poor old George wouldn’t know one end of a hoover from the other.” “But Fran,” Maggie said, “I’ve been in bed with flu for nearly a fortnight. I don’t just mean a headache and a sniffle. I’ve had real flu, the whole caboodle. It was awful. I wanted to die. I couldn’t have lifted a feather duster, let alone a vacuum. I thought you must be looking after George. Not that I cared. I haven’t cared about anything except feeding the cat and I’m not sure I even did that every day.” “You poor old thing,” replied Frances. “But isn’t it odd? Who could it have been? We haven’t noticed anyone going in and out. Haven’t seen George either, come to that, not even pruning his precious roses.” “It’s a real mystery”, replied Maggie, feeling rather responsible. “Talking of mysteries,” Frances said brightly, “there’s been a strange car parked in their back garden. Tony saw it when he went in to get their dustbin, which George had forgotten to put out of course. He said the car was sort of hidden behind the greenhouse. One of those little Smart things, baby pink. We thought it must be a present for Jean. It’s been there all the time until yesterday.” “I know that car,” said Maggie. “Clare Bartlett has got a car like that. You know, Clare from the King’s Head. The blonde one with the bust. Better not say anything to Jean.” Frances tried hard not to giggle as she replied.“Why George! The sly old goat. He managed to organise that then. A resident housekeeper. Talk about ‘when the cat’s away’!” Next morning when Maggie opened the front door to an urgent knock she found a delivery boy holding a beautiful flower arrangement. It carried a card saying ‘Many thanks for everything’ with the ‘everything’ double underlined. She smiled to herself and murmured “But it wasn’t me”, knowing she could never tell Jean the truth. If she had been feeling better she might have taken the bouquet round to the King’s Head, card and all.

Tricia’s Column

How time flies. It only seems like a week ago I was writing my column for the May issue of Golden Times now it's already time to write another one for July.

Since I wrote my last column, I've had a wonderful, but very windy, holiday in Tunisia and been to more birthday parties than I can count because of the strange tendency for women in my family to have babies in May & June. You'd think we'd spread the festivities out around the year to give ourselves a chance to recover from each bout of buying presents & cards but no. In our family, we blow out about 300 candles over the summer then everything goes quiet through the Autumn before my granddaughter, daughter and husband all have their birthdays in the first week of December. Unfortunately, quite a significant percentage of the candles we blow out are on my cake as I've now reached the grand old age of 65, though I still feel 18 at heart!

Anyway, enough about birthdays. As I hinted at in my last column, I dragged my husband away from the Sports channel on TV and off to the White Rock Theatre to see the 60's Musical "Carnaby Street". I thought the show was excellent and by the last

number the entire audience was out of their seats and dancing. It was a real shame to hear that the Aquaria show we ran a competition for in the last magazine had been cancelled, but every cloud has a silver lining,

and everyone who entered that particular competition is being entered into this months draw to win tickets to see "Save the last dance for me". If you sent in an entry for the Aquarius competition, make sure you save yourself a stamp this time round, you're already in the draw!

For all you hands-on grandparents out there looking for inspiration for things to do with the children this summer, make sure you pick up the latest copy of our sister publication "The Family Buzz" which you can see in the middle here. It's full of information tailored

to keeping the kids occupied so can be an invaluable resource if you're expected to entertain the grandkids in the school hols.

That's about it from me for this month, hope you enjoy the magazine and good luck with the competition if you enter. See you next time

EVENTS IN JULY & AUGUST

HIGH SUMMER AT PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS

‘One of the finest gardens in England’ the award winning gardens at Pashley are open from now until the end of September. Whenever you visit there is something to delight the senses – the herbaceous borders are at their best in July, August and September with dahlias, lilies, asters, sunflowers and a second flowering of roses.

As well as coming to see the beautiful gardens you should ‘allow time to sample the fabulous homemade food and warm hospitality at arguably the best garden café in the county, much of which is sourced from the abundant kitchen garden’ (Leigh Clapp in ‘Sussex Life’ 2012).

July and August have been called ‘Lily Time’ because there are hundreds of lilies planted in the gardens and woodland, which come into flower over these two months. Then, at the end of August, over the bank holiday weekend, Pashley is host to the Sussex Guild Craft Show when there will be over 40 stalls showcasing work of the highest quality for sale from local designers/makers.

Eve Peacock is an internationally renowned Clairvoyant Tarot Reader and Palmist and has appeared many times on TV inc. Dear EveThis may sound silly but my cat Molly died under anaesthetic for quite a routine dental operation. I feel so sad and also guilty. Should I have refused to let her have surgery?Angela, Hastings.I can see your beautiful tortoiseshell cat Angela. I know that animals go to the Spirit World just like people, but in a way its also like you haven't lost her because she is still in your home. It's possible that pets don't realise they have passed and carry on as normal. It's the singular most common "ghost sighting" that I have been told about over the years, that people see, hear or even feel their lost pets. What she does miss is her basket that you have put away somewhere. She wants it out again! I can also see that

Molly did have some form of cancer and would have passed anyway in time but may have suffered more, so please don't feel guilty.

Dear EveI am 65 and really need to move home to somewhere more suitable as I have a problem with my stairs these days. Also my garden has become too large for me to manage. I am desperate to sell for these and other reasons. My house has been on and off the market for the past 3 years. Can you see the property market picking up soon? My birthday is March 30th. Mrs S.G. HailshamGosh these 3 years must have been very hard for you as Aries are not normally known for their patience! I feel a slight upturn in the property market for the remainder of this year but in your personal circumstances I see some movement around September indicated by the Chariot Tarot card. You must put it on the market and keep it on the market until it sells.I do feel there has been some unpleasantness with neighbours which has made you feel even more that you want to leave, though I do see you reaching a better understanding with them and even a reconciliation before you go. This will give you a sense of not leaving under a dark cloud. It seems you are trying to move closer to family which may even involve a complete re-location but I sense you will be happier and feel more supported. I think you will get an offer in September and be moving before Christmas 2013.

Cut each cheek in half and toss with the garlic and dill.Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan or deep-fat fryer to 180-190C. Dip the cod cheeks into the batter and fry in batches until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Serve immediately with the tartare sauce.
