TEACH US TO PRAY In the time that the disciples followed Jesus they watched him perform miracles, preach sermons and tell parables. But not once did the disciples ask Jesus to teach them about these skills. There was, however one thing the disciples did ask Jesus to teach them — how to pray. I think this tells us two things. First, while there were many things that Jesus did that drew their attention and even amazed them, the disciples must have realized that what made those actions possible was Jesus’ prayer life. Certainly the Gospels confirm that Jesus took time to pray before every major moment of his ministry. From before calling the apostles and feeding the multitude, to his transfiguration and arrest and death, Jesus spent time in prayer. The apostles may have stumbled in those years and didn’t always understand Jesus’ words or actions, but they knew that prayer was both an anchor and lifeline for Jesus. I think their request also tells us that prayer can be taught. It is not a reflex or a mindless activity. It is not a mystery that only the holiest of us can understand. That first lesson of prayer is in the Gospel today. Jesus gives the disciples a prayer to memorize. A set of words that would seep into their souls through repetition. A prayer that would take them a lifetime to understand. This prayer that we know as the Lord’s Prayer is not only like a shallow pool that a child or new believer might wade into without fear, but it is also a pool so deep that it reflects the endless depth of God’s love. The version here in Luke’s Gospel is a bit shorter and less poetic than the one in St. Matthew’s, but it is not a magic incantation that requires exact wording. It begins with Jesus teaching us to call God “Our Father,” but not just in the Old Testament metaphor. Jesus uses an image even more familiar and tender, using the word a child would use to call out to a loving “daddy.” But that does not mean that God is just a “buddy.” God is still God, the Lord of all creation and of history. The prayer also gives us permission and the instruction to go to God continually in a spirit of confession, petition, dependence and hope. The prayer tells us that it is God, revealed by the teaching and witness of Jesus, that we can go to with our worship, our physical needs and our spiritual failures. Throughout our lives we will find many prayers both written by others and written in our own hearts and in our own words that will deepen our prayer life. But we will find that they are really the amplification of the one simple prayer taught to us by Jesus. That is why for most of us, if not all of us, it is part of our daily discipline. It is not just a starting place for prayer, it is the finish line of the prayer marathon of life. But what does it mean for us, the people who sometimes struggle with life in the 21st century? I heard this story about a married couple, their relationship in serious disrepair, unable to talk with each other and on the cusp of a divorce. One day they dragged each other into an empty church and sat there in silence for a long time. And then the wife spoke, saying softly, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” She didn’t know why she said it, but it gave her a sense of not being alone. After a few seconds, he answered softly “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” They went on asking for forgiveness of sins and forgiving those who had sinned against them, depending on God for their daily bread and asking God to spare them from temptation and evil. When they finished, they found a bridge that they were not able to find on their own. It wasn’t magic from a 1st century incantation. It was simply the power of prayer, of words learned long ago that came to life in a new way. These words of prayer can give wing to our deepest longings before God and between each other. We are grateful to God who has taught and continues to teach us how to pray.

ASKING FOR HELP

The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Thank you to the 193 families in Blessed Trinity Parish that have already made a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year we are hoping to raise enough money in the appeal to be able to pay for the excess costs of the renovations at St. Edmund. While most

of the construction costs will be covered by the generosity of the families who donated to Generations of Faith Capital Campaign, there are still expenses that will need to be taken care of. Once we reach 100% of our goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal, every

dollar raised after that will come directly to Blessed Trinity Parish and will be used to help offset the expenses of the renovations. If you haven’t already made a donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal, won’t you please consider doing so? We are very close to

reaching our goal. This Community Center will be for the benefit of everyone, young and old alike.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.--James Field, Copyright (c) J. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer is our focus this weekend. In the Gospel, Jesus gives his disciples, and us, the Lords Prayer, which we have cherished through the centuries. The first two words encompass much about our faith--unity among all Christians (Our), and a sense that we are in a deeply bonded relationship with God (Father). In Genesis, we see Abraham in conversational prayer, in his creaturely humility before his Creator, seeking mercy and compassion for the innocent. The psalm is a lyrical prayer of thanksgiving and praise for the God who answered the sincere prayers of a people who had called out for help, showing them mercy. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples want to pray like Jesus, with the same intimacy--to experience God as Abba in the depths of their being. Do we try to talk to God? Do we listen for answers? This relationship is always a work in progress.

LIFES PERSISTENT QUESTIONS Most of us can probably imagine (or remember) the delightful questions a young child might ask with innocence and curiosity. What is air? How does a bird fly? Answers are often met with another question: Why? No answer to that question is ever adequate, and so the child persists in asking--Why? Why? Why?? A quest for knowledge? Of course, but the child’s persistence can only flourish in a relationship of trust. These conversations between the child and, typically, an older relative have the power to deepen confidence and intimacy. How like prayer this is! Humans are frail. We have questions, fears, needs. And so we pray--but how? How do we speak or relate at all to the Lord of endless life, the God of our salvation?

OUR ABBA Today’s scriptures provide some answers. We discover that, like Abraham in Genesis and Jesus in Luke’s Gospel, its all about relationship. In Genesis, the Israelites were still trying to learn who this Creator God was and what was the nature of the relationship between the divine and the human. Today we find Abraham in conversation with God, who is contemplating the ruin of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their evil behavior. The intimacy of Abrahams relationship with God allows him to plead for the innocent, to negotiate with God about the intended destruction. The disciples experience Jesus in deep prayer. Asked to teach them how to pray, Jesus gives them his own prayer to the God he knows as Abba. The Lords Prayer, slightly different in Luke’s Gospel, contains elements that would be familiar to the disciples. But calling God Father was deeply intimate and probably somewhat startling. This is the kind of prayer to which we are called. Jesus teaches us that we, his sisters and brothers, can call God Our Father. How powerful these two words are when we pray them together!
