Be Vigilant of Child Abuse at all times! It is vitally important that we are constantly vigilant-that we always observe the behaviors of those who interact with children. And we must always communicate our concerns to the appropriate parties When children exhibit dramatic behavioral changes, adults must find out what caused the changes. Being aware of what's happening with our children means talking to, listening to, and observing them-at every opportunity. LIVING OUR FAITH @ BLESSED TRINITY… ...BROUGHT TO YOU BY M2 DECKING Dear Faithful People of God Some years ago, Bill Gates gave this speech to Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia, California. Wonderful words of wisdom anytime of year—including this bitter cold time in New York City! Agree or disagree . . . . think about it and pass it on ….. Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it. Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping - they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now, they got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

At the same time, we are called to love this world back into life with our lives rooted in the Lord Jesus. Lives rooted in prayer and grounded in faith. Also, may we never lost perspective . . . . Keep reading . . . .

One Sunday a church with a large congregation invited a guest priest to offer the mass and to preach. When he got up to preach he said, “There are three points to my homily.” Some people yawned when they heard this. They heard this many times before and figured they would be quite bored by the time he finally got to the end of point three. “My first point is this: Today there are about two billion people who are starving in our world because of lack of food.” The reaction in the pews was much the same, since they had heard that kind of statement many times before. “My second point,” he said. People sat up and started to listen. He was already on the second point. “My second point is that most of you don’t give a damn!” The priest paused for a moment as gasps and rumblings flowed through the congregation. “My third point is that the real tragedy among Christians today is that many of you are now more concerned that I said ‘damn’ than you are that I said two billion people are starving to death.” He then left the pulpit and sat down. The whole homily took less than a minute. It is in many ways one of the most powerful homilies ever given. The preacher was reminding us we are not being called by Jesus to only piety, but to genuine morality. We are being called to action, not to fancy words.

Christianity is about what you practice, not just about you profess.

Keep smiling, Fr. Peter

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Congratulations! Welcome to the Kingdom! Rejoice and leap for joy! Sounds a little like Easter, doesn’t it? Well, in a very real way, it is. This Sunday, the scriptures remind us that we are blessed and beloved, especially when we have difficulties and don’t feel especially blessed. Jesus reminds us that God blesses us in our trials, so we should trust in the saving power of God. We are raised from the dead, as it were, each time we arise from our hardships. The ultimate proof of all of this is our new life in Christ, who died so that we could be free of sin, and was raised from the dead so that we might all have new life. Wouldn’t that be something? A new life, in which poverty is riches and sadness is transformed into lightness of spirit? Its a topsy-turvy world, isn’t it? Do you feel blessed today?

CONGRATULATIONS! Today’s Gospel from Luke is the Sermon on the Plain with the Beatitudes, what we usually think of as the Sermon on the Mount. It seems as though Jesus is congratulating those who would have been considered unfortunate, doesn’t it? The Beatitude statements overturn the concept of fortunate in Jesus time, naming those who are poor, hungry, mourning, or marginalized as those who should rejoice. Jesus continues with prophetic and startling Woe to you! statements, directed to those usually thought of as blessed. Heavenly reward is not a privilege of the rich and comfortable but a blessing for all who trust in God, whose reward will be great in heaven.

WHOM DO YOU TRUST? The first reading and the psalm take a somewhat different focus: trust in God, not people or things of this world. One who trusts in God is fortunate, like a plant that produces good fruit, sustained by living waters and currents of grace. Not so the wicked, who wither and vanish, blowing away like the illusions of their self-absorption. Paul, in the second reading, confronts members of the early Christian community of Corinth who were doubting, or devaluing, belief in Jesus resurrection and the general resurrection of the dead. Depending on the material world in their spiritual pride, they believed that their righteousness was something they had achieved on their own. They felt self-sufficient, rich, not in need of the ongoing saving power of Christ’s resurrection that completes the sacrifice of Good Friday through Easter, which is our true blessing. So, congratulations! Acknowledging our need for God, we are rich in the Kingdom love of our Father. Our hunger is satisfied by the sustaining nourishment of the Spirit. Our weeping is turned into dancing knowing that Jesus is with us in our sorrows, in fact knew them when he walked upon earth. Reasons enough for us to rejoice, always, even when people treat us badly. Gods reward to us is the Kingdom, now and always. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time: BLESSED When we think of the word Beatitude we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in Johns Gospel, Christ proclaims, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the Blessed, for they are the ones who lived the blessed life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co..

This past Tuesday, NY 1 ran a story on Sr. Maura Clarke, the Maryknoll Missionary who was murdered in El Salvador in 1980. Sr. Maura lived her life with the fundamental belief that the world should be built on justice. They

interviewed members of the Clarke family as well as Fr. Bill Sweeney, Pastor of St. Francis De Sales Church. The reason for the interviews was to discuss the possibility of Sr. Maura Clarke being considered for Sainthood. The

children in St. Francis De sales School have been praying to Sr. Maura, asking her to watch over them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a woman who was such a model of faith, as well as being a member of our neighboring

community of Belle Harbor canonized a Saint?
