The Top Two Good morning fellow collegians! Wow…so much has been going on in the past couple weeks. We had a great supporter turnout to the final two soccer matches; we easily out-supported our competitors, even on the morning after Scholars’ Dinner - let’s keep it up! Congrats to lads’ hockey for making it through to the quarter-finals and to girls’ soccer for taking 4th place! Homie D wasn’t just tearing it on the hockey pitch, he also stole the show at Public Speaking last Sunday night. (Props to Suz for bringing Public Speaking to IH for the first time!) Tae and Dre did a great job of putting on Songkran, providing everyone with some wet and wild afternoon delight. A special thanks to David JJ for Saturday night ;) Brazilian National Night was a smash! Matt, Vee Vien, Richard, Kane, Yume, Zoe, Erin and all the other performers rocked the stage. Thanks to everyone else who helped put things together behind the scenes. As for the committee, we’ve been working on getting a proper laundry set up in Scheps (and potentially getting all the laundries open so they can be used for hanging your washing), improving our IT facilities (see online poll regarding Nexus), getting the library open for extended hours, and many other things! Next week we’ve got some new equipment coming in, including a bubbler for the gym, new Wii controllers/nunchucks, and a table tennis table complete with all the necessary table tennis accoutrements! Remember, you’re free to come to any of our meetings with your ideas. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Due to necessary works on the Wadham bathrooms set to commence after the end of the academic year, the Wadham tutors will be relocated to the largest Greycourt rooms over the summer break. Hence, these four rooms will be unavailable under summer scheme. Keep your eye out for Panda Cup, Table Tennis, the Rowing Regatta, and Café Internationale! Stay beautiful people! Much love, Bri-Bri and Mi-Gi

Editor’s Edict Welcome to the Globe! Why yes, that is a new profile picture for me because just like everyone else I am celebrating the #yearofthepanda! Dance-off, public speaking, soccer, cricket, table tennis... how many more medals can ICAC throw at us? This week we recruited a hedgehog from the flowerbeds near the front office and made him prophesy our futures, found and ex-IHer rooting around in the soil and got him to tell us about his project "Urban Growth" and got Kim Jong Un Riley Metcalfe to tell us "Is the world going to end at the hands of a mad, nuke-happy dictator who looks like he ate one too many Kinder Surprise™?" I would also personally like to declare it "Hug a New Zealander Week" as our sheepish friends across the Tasman have just legalized love by passing their marriage equality bill <3 <3. So check out your stars, get hugging and support support support! Erin xoxo

Urban Growth [əәrbəәn groθ] – n

1. The growth of urban communities; a. Growing Physically - through the proliferation of green spaces and the natural environment in urban settings and; b. Growing Socially - relating to community education and engagement in the area of sustainable living and environmental responsibility.

This is my new definition of ‘Urban Growth’. It will no longer be referred to as just the increase of population in an urban area or community. Rather I want it to take on a wider meaning to encompass the growth of the community in a variety capacities. My name is Oliver Emary, founder of www.urban-growth.com - a blog with the intention to share experiences, articles, photos etc. relating to sustainability in urban settings. My emphasis is on communicating examples and ideas of positive change and solutions people are actually involved in right now. I was an IHer like you guys back in 2008/09, studying civil engineering and partying hard. I knew about the climate change debate and environmental concerns but I found it hard to relate to the issue at hand; as if they didn’t really affect me. As a result I continued through my university career giving little thought to sustainability issues. I rode on my push bike everywhere but that was out of necessity; seeing it as the faster mode of transport and the cheapest! As for with electricity consumption, at IH I left everything on in my room all the time. For Earth Hour I was more enthused by the idea of being allowed to harass people than the by the good I was doing for our planet.

My passion for building things and procrastinating (I had my final semester thesis to write) led me to design and build a balcony garden at home from recycled wood and, during the process, I decided to write down some of my thoughts and ideas. Urban Growth had begun. It started initially as a space to share and discuss ideas about green spaces like mine. However, the more I read and shared my ideas through the website/blog the ‘mission’ behind ‘Urban Growth’ evolved and developed into something bigger. So many people, and countries for that matter, are all talk and no action! This blog is designed to communicate issues surrounding urban sustainability but more importantly share ideas and solutions that people are working on NOW. I want to show everyone solutions that can be and are being done as you read this article, not things that are speculative and only possibilities. These solutions can be on a global scale all the way down to the local level. I encourage you to check it out. I am always looking for new content and am interested in publishing in a number of different languages. If you are working on something or know of anything that will help 'Urban Growth' on its mission please contact me at - [email protected] Oliver

Serious Shit You Missed This Week NORTH KOREA EDITION!!! with Riley Metcalfe Recently much media attention has been given to North Korea, and their increasingly belligerent attitude towards South Korea, the United States and Japan. North Korea’s threats have including officially declaring a state of war with South Korea (and the United Nations forces that fought on the South’s side in the Korean War.) North Korea has also showed a plan to attack sites on the mainland US, including Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Austin, Texas (close to former President Bush’s ranch.) North Korea has had a long history of threats followed by a period of withdrawal, but this recent crisis has been unusual as North Korea’s threats have been more hyperbolic and aggressive than any previous crisis. Additionally, the relatively new leader, Kim Jong-un is untested, and his behaviour in a crisis such as this is to be seen. Much attention has been given to the North’s development of nuclear weapons, and nuclear delivery systems. The most recent nuclear test by the North, conducted earlier this year had a maximum yield of 9 kilotons of TNT. In comparison, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had a yield of 16 kilotons, while the largest nuclear weapon in the US arsenal, the B83 has a maximum yield of 1.2 megatons. To use its nuclear arsenal, the North must develop a delivery system. Their Air Force is very old, inefficient and vulnerable to US and South Korean airpower, so the likelihood of the North delivering a nuclear weapon by air is very unlikely. The North appears to be developing ballistic missile technology, but previous rocket tests have proved to be risky. Additionally, their missiles would be targets for increasingly effective anti-ballistic missile systems employed by the United States and their allies. Nuclear weapons mounted on missiles require a level of technological sophistication which the North appears to lack – such nuclear weapons must be very light and very small. The international community is, however, taking the North’s threat seriously. The United States has deployed strategic bombers to the peninsula, and has bolstered its missile defence on the West Coast. There has been much speculation over the goal of North Korea. Previously, North Korea has used threats to develop nuclear weapons as an attempt to gain more aid or international recognition. This does not appear to be the goal here. In fact, the North’s only ally, China appears to be distancing themselves from the North. This could be an attempt by Kim Jong-un to increase his legitimacy at home as a ‘hardliner’ by continuing to threaten war. Jong-un must ultimately realise that another war will end very badly for North Korea. Another Chinese intervention – which saved the North the first time, is unlikely if the North acts as an aggressor. Worryingly, the new President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, the daughter of a former dictator is also a hardliner, so any threats from the North could spiral out of control. However cooler heads from both China and the United States will hopefully prevent rash action from either side.

Peng tells jokes The jokes section this week is dedicated to Malaysia's coming election -with much pessimism it will be clean. (Disclaimer: the jokes section is not factual, and does not contain valid sources)

One day, three politicians from Zimbabwe, Russia, and Malaysia were talking and chanced upon God. "It is difficult to find a honest politician these days, and so for you three pure souls I have come to answer a question for each. Ask what your heart most desires to know!" They were stunned, but happy for the opportunity.

"When will Zimbabwe be clean from corruption?" The first politician, a Zimbabwean old and weary with age, asked. "In 20 years." Replied God. In reaction, the Zimbabwean broke down in tears because he would not live to see that day.

"When will Russia be clean from corruption?" Asked the Russian- who was middle-aged and with greater hope in Russia. "In 80 years." Replied God. In surprise, the Russian also broke down in tears because she would not live to see that day.

"When will Malaysia be clean from corruption?" Asked the third politician- from Malaysia, who was younger and more hopeful still. To that- God paused, then promptly broke down in tears.

Movie Review: El Mariachi

with Evan Freidin

So, believe it or not, but there was once a time where Robert Rodriguez was taken seriously as a filmmaker. He made movies that were more than just ridiculous B-movie homages or crappy children's films that will give you horrible nightmares. Instead he made interesting genre pieces that weren’t overblown pastiches based on a fake trailer he once made as a joke. In 1992 his first such movie, El Mariachi, was an independent Mexican action film whose interesting visual flair despite a miniscule budget made it become one of most influential films of the decade. Upon its release Rodriguez became one of Hollywood’s most famous success stories, was offered budgets beyond his wildest dreams, and also became best friends with Quentin Tarantino. All in all, I think the film worked out for him pretty well. The film itself deals with a classic pulp fiction type storyline as the eponymous hero the Mariachi (played by Rodriguez’s childhood friend Carlos Gallardo) wanders into town looking for work, finds himself mistaken for a local criminal and unwittingly becomes embroiled in a gang war. He is then forced to eschew his romantic ideals of a Mariachi and take on the way of the warrior, where with his Uzi he must strike at those who seek to harm him. It is an incredibly goofy story, told with the occasional vaguely philosophical tangent, yet it is Rodriguez’ love for the action genre conventions that lead him to create moments of such visual awesomeness that you can’t help but not care. Think of John Woo, but with turtles instead of white doves. What truly makes this film special though is how Rodriguez was able to direct, shot and edit the film with a budget of about $7000. Even now that is a ridiculously tiny amount for a movie budget. That’s the kind of money your average action film spends on lunch. But Rodriguez was able to look past the expenses needed for a proper action film and with a bunch cost saving tricks, including denying several hungry Mexicans their well-deserved lunch, was able to make a film more visually interesting than said proper action films. If you ever get the film on DVD or Blu-ray then listen to the director’s commentary. Rodriguez gives a fantastic boot camp version of dirt poor film making, revealing all his tricks that made the movie what it is.

After all the fun of Ekiden yesterday (there will be photos in next week’s Cultural Committee Newsletter), it is time to turn our attention to a more sombre event: ANZAC day on the 25th April. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corp. It is a day when Australians and New Zealanders around the country (and the world) stop to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in war for their country and, in particular, the sacrifices made a Gallipoli (Turkey) and on the Western Front in World War 1. World War 1 was the first significant conflict after Australian Federation in 1901 and the first time Australian soldiers had fought under the Australian flag. The loss of 60,000 men – out of a population of 5 million – united the country and cemented the idea of an Australian nation. The Gallipoli campaign itself was a disaster. No Allied gains were made. The landing boats mistakenly came ashore at ANZAC cove, a beach that offered almost no cover and was surrounded by steep cliffs on which the Turks had dug their trenches. What ensued was a bloodbath. Although fighting continued until December, the only successful manoeuvre of the war was the evacuation of Australian troops under the cover of deception. Lest We Forget

SUPPORTER OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!

This Globe's supporter of the week is Maya Raj for being rallied to come support at the girls' soccer semi-final after staying up all night in the JCR helping Ellie with her assignment!"

Sport Report with Abby Cochrane After weeks of early morning trainings, sweat, blood and tears, the IH girls got off to a bloody brilliant start with a convincing win over our biggest rivals, Whitley. A delicious goal from Prue saw IH take an early lead and hold it without any signs of losing it, but luckily the defence Fi Rizzle, T-Town, Gangle, In-and-out, the Gooses and Cherish-her had it covered. Friday saw the girls defeat UC. A corner from Abbey went to Jenna, but Jenna couldn’t finish the job, resulting in a deflection to Shannon, who sealed the deal with a solid goal. Later on, a defender thinking she was the keeper and catching the ball, lead to a penalty for IH which Jenna took and finished the job in styleeeeee! *crowd goes crazy* Tuesday was the start of the finals campaign, with a quarter final against St Hilda’s. An intense game of running from the forwards, Poo Batch, Jordizzzzle, Sham-wow and Rachie saw their defenders run to the ground and allowed the inspector gadget legs of Prue to consolidate her efforts with a magnificent goal Thursday was the day we took on Ormond. A very lucky early goal from Abbey put the girls into the lead and allowed them to let their hair down a little. Ridiculous keeping from Cherisha saw the girls maintain this lead until the last 10 Friday, the day after Scholar’s Dinner. A day when the girls, grew into men. Very seedy men. But men none the less. We took on St Mary’s on this very day. Mary’s was there, boots on and ready to go. But, so was IH. It was a very even game, IH had the opportunities but couldn’t quite cash them in. A red card to Mary’s in the last few minutes saw them a man down, but Mary’s managed to hold off until the very end of the game and somehow score a goal in the first half of golden goal, sealing IH into 4th position. Well done to all of the girls involved, and a MASSIVE thankyou to all of the supports, and especially Phil Tan and Ken Ho Khoo.
