Hi Ihers! As many of you know, Johnny Ware has left us all to go on a jetset-ting adventure to Switzerland...I am a tiny bit jealous I have to admit. How-

ever that means that I am now the new editor of Globe! I am super excited to be in this awesome role, and if ANYONE out there needs to get their feelings heard, whether it’s totally serious stuff or perhaps a particularly delectable shot you encountered whilst out last night, then do let me know! We have

rather quiet movie nights led the path to a long awaited CENTURION where everyone, both participants and non-participants, seemed to be enjoying themselves! (Even if it wasn’t so enjoyable the next morning… In honor of Barman, George, and David, you guys really showed some respect- Congratulations to George for doubling the centurion as well!) With the mid-sem break now coming to an end, I’m sure you’re ready to get back to uni and continue to honor your family. But just because mid-sem’s over doesn’t mean that the fun’s going to stop. With the Scholars’ Dinner on Thursday night I think we can all rely on a night worth waiting for! Also, don’t forget the girls’ soccer games are at 7am on Monday morning and 8am on Friday morning! So show some love and support the girls on both mornings! Mixed netball is also on its way so keep an eye out for any more no-tices. I hope you all enjoyed your week off and ease in to another six weeks!

That’s all from us, P and VP.

Hey guys! How lonely IH has been without all your lovely smiles and laughter to fill the halls... But with everyone eager to get involved, let’s start with a big congratulation to Steph on becoming the new Globe editor!IH was reduced to a rather mere handful of boys and girls over the Easter Weekend but that didn’t last long considering IH is everyone’s new home away from home! The week kicked off with an Easter Egg Hunt on Friday nights as you explored Grey Court with glow sticks guiding you to the bun-dles of goodness hidden throughout. With plenty of chocolate to last the week, you left with a smile on your faces and heavy pockets! A lot of kind-hearted people also came down to the lanai in order to help paint for the Café and throughout the painting, everyone took part in a bit of chitchatting and singing to Nif’s collection of music. What more could there have been to bring the night to a close but pizza and soccer in the TV room! A few more

some awesome regulars working on the Globe already, but there is always room for more :) So get those opinions out!

In other news, I hope you all had a super fun break, ate way too much chocolate and are fully energised for the coming weeks of partying..or studying, whichever is your thing. With events like Cafe International

and the IH ball coming up (woo!) I am sure you will all be doing plenty of both.

Enjoy this issue of the Globe, until next week!

fresher of the week

Fresher of the week #1: Su Lin ‘Where’s my coffee?!’ Dunster

Fresher of the week #2: Cherisha ‘Cherish her’ Koshy

To say this fresh faced hottie loves her caffeine may be a bit of an understatement..Rarely seen with-out her signature Melbourne Uni coffee cup in hand (that’s right to all you other uni people, we have our own coffee cups ;), she loves nothing better than to snuggle up in some short shorts, uggs and trusty thermos in hand as she flicks through the billion and one pictures she has taken from the night before..

That’s right IHers, no doubt all of you are familiar with Su Lin’s infamous camera..Always ready to cap-ture a drunken fall, spilt drink or other embarrass-ing moment for the world to see. But where would we be without her! IH thanks you Su Lin, because of you and your trusty camera, the wild nights we share (O’week toga party anyone!?) will forever be engrained into our memories and Facebook walls. Ah the joy of waking up eagerly awaiting a fresh batch of tags!

Not one to shy away from a wild night, Su Lin is al-ways up for a party, her drink of choice? UDL’s, Smirnoff double blacks..basically anything pre mixed. This girl parties hard, in fact on her recent jaunt to Sydney, apparently her love of pre mixed drinks had a dire effect..sugar overload anyone!?

Her infamous antics aboard party buses and here at IH are legendary, so if you are ever in need of some travel tips on Singapore, (or maybe a double black or two), make sure you meet this marketer-in-the-making ;)

There is a reason this Fresher's name sounds like "cherish her" and you definitely should. Cherish her that is! All terrible puns aside, this lovely lady can be spotted from a great distance due to the entirely cherish-able, bright white smile she al-ways has on her face. A commerce student and born organizer, this fresher spends much of her time lending a helping hand to whatever is go-ing on around IH (you can thank her later for her work on National Night and Cafe International). She is ridiculously international herself, hailing from India via all over the UK (hence the cute British-y accent) and speaking Hindi, English, Spanish, German and Malayalam (try saying that one ten times fast and yes, it's a palindrome). She admits to an obsession with two of finest things Western culture has ever produced: Friends and the French fry. On a typical Saturday night, you can find her in the clubs with a vodka in hand (but never serve her SKYY) and probably look-ing after our previous fresher of the week (a French fry himself) when things get...disorderly. A big "well done you are awesome!" is in order as this fresher has recently been selected for TREAD, and will be taking off to Thailand to rep-resent IH and teach English in rural Thai schools.PS. Stalker tip; she goes running at 7am on a Tuesday morning around Princes Park.

Congrats to this week’s victor, Alexandre ‘Oh La La’ Guerin..Madi you will always be IH’s first call for Goon.. ;)

Money and Morewith Jonathan Regan-Beasley

As some of you know, I’m enrolled in a class with a particularly conservative professor who believes that the government has absolutely no right whatsoever to take our money coercively as revenue. I thought I’d take the opportunity this week to refute that argu-ment, and explain why I’m more than happy to pay my tax burden, and why it should go up as I earn more. The argument that many people make in trying to

justify a lower tax burden for the wealthy is that taxa-tion punishes success. These people are looking at the situation the wrong way. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the wealthy could not have gotten to where they are today without the support an excellent democratic, integrated and globalised economy we enjoy in a country such as Australia. There’s a reason why so many people choose to be educated in Aus-tralia, even migrate here. It is truly one of the great-est and most coherently functioning societies on this planet. For someone to take as much as they do in the form

of education, social support, safety and so on in order to become rich, only to bemoan the system the mo-ment they hit the jackpot and have to pay an amount proportional to their success is wholly and somewhat disgustingly hypocritical. My tax burden is not a pun-ishment my success, it’s a payment for the right to live in a civilised society and exploit its resources for my own gain.Of course, if you were to ask me “Would you rather

not pay taxes?”, of course the answer is going to be yes. Just the same as I would rather not pay rent, or my phone bills, or the check for an expensive dinner in Southbank. But just the same as I recognise that I’m making a payment required for the benefit received from living in a comfortable house, or eating a deli-cious meal, or receiving a good telephone service, I recognise that I must pay for the benefit I receive from living in a civilised society. If I’m not satisfied with the result, I’m more than capable – particularly given my high income – to jump on a plane and move to an-other society, where you would find that would pay a rate of tax approximately equal to the benefit derived from living in such a society. So the next time somebody says to you “The gov-

ernment should stop punishing my success”, I highly encourage you to invite them onto the next plane to Tuvalu – they can clearly achieve just as much over there and face a substantially lower tax burden.

If it isn’t blatantly obvious...donate!! DO IT!

If there is something I love more than college, it is without a doubt alcohol. Today I will share a few tricks, facts, and myths you may have not known about our mutual friend.

Myth: Taking an aspirin before you drink will reduce a hangover.Firstly, what kind of damn magical aspirin are you taking that works through the night preventing that pounding head-

ache in the morning? Taking aspirin actually slows the rate at which your body digests the alcohol and will prolong the effects. If you think this magic myth works since you have tried it, chances are you were waking up still drunk.

Fact: People with lighter eye colors (green, blue, hazel or whatever the hell you call it) have a higher alcohol toler-ance than those with darker color eyes.

Fact: In the United States there are approximately 14 college students that do not drink. And they have no friends.Fact: Hangovers• Somepeoplegeneticallyhaveworsehangoversthanothers.• DarkLiquorswillcauseyoutobemorehungoverthanlighterliquors.• Symptomsincludedehydration, headache, nausea, and“I’mneverdrinkingagain.”• Commontreatmentsinclude:Drinkingmore, foodandwater, andstopbeingweaksauce.

Fact: The national anthem of United States “The Star Spangled Banner,” was written to the tune of a drinking song.Amurica, F*** yeah!

Fact: Most vegetable and almost all fruits contain a small amount of alcohol in them.Of course this is a small amount or else rabbits would be constantly faded.

Trick: Warm to Cold Beer in 60 SecondsIn a cooler of ice while your other brews are chilling down, spin the beer on the ice very fast for about 60 seconds

(maybe longer depending on how drunk you still are). Bam, cold beer. This is by far one of the coolest tricks I’ve learned in my college career.

Culture Vulture - The Pirates! A band of misfitswith Emily Vearing

columns

Pirates! is the latest release from Aardman, the com-pany who brought us Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep. It follows the story of Pirate Cap-tain (Hugh Grant) on his quest to win the coveted Pi-rate of The Year award, after being humiliated by his contemporaries Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven), Peg Leg Hastings (Lenny Henry) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek).

The misadventures of Pirate Captain and his motley crew lead them to an alliance with the lovesick, conniv-ing Charles Darwin (David Tennant) and they leave the high seas for Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton)’s London.

This is a children’s film but it is filled with wisecracks that will keep adults (or at least uni students…) in stitches. I was laughing far more often and far more loudly than my young cousins, who I had taken under the guise of being a responsible adult, who would actually rather be watching a grown-up movie but instead was sacrificing my time to be a good cousin. In fact as soon as I heard that this was a David Tennant/Hugh Grant movie I knew I must see it. I invited the children out of politeness.

The animation and humour is distinctly Aardman, which is what I loved about it. In places Pirates! is even more absurd than some of their earlier work but it is so en-dearing. The bright setting of the sailing ship is con-trasted against the dark, foggy streets of gloomy indus-trial London and looks wonderful in claymation. It is also not difficult to see that they designed the characters’ appearances based on the actors’ voices and in Pirate with Scarf (Martin Freeman)’s case especially, their looks.

All round the cast is fantastic. You can tell that these high-profile names had an absolute ball making this movie. Even the non-speaking roles of Polly the parrot/dodo and Bobo the manpanzee add a lot to the movie, especially Bobo who is by far the most British monkey I’ve ever seen.

The soundtrack is great as well. Keep your ears out for a sneaky little Flight of the Con-co rds action to pleasure your ear-holes!

Basically this is a movie that I want to see again. If you want some funny, sweet, ridiculous British humour to brighten your day, go and see The Pirates! A Band of Misfits and if you don’t invite me to come with you, I will be most upset.

Not These Pirates!
