Project Code IFLA HQ: G2.14.1-1/13 Report on the Mexican Workshop 2013 Global Trends in Acquisition and Collection Development in Academic and Public Libraries. IFLA Section 14: Acquisition and Collection Building Dr. Regine Schmolling (Secretary and key note speaker) A bilingual Workshop for librarians of an emerging country (Mexico) was held in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico from 19th to 21st June 2013. 28 librarians, most of the Baja California region, attended the seminar with four key note speakers of the IFLA ACD section: Jérôme Fronty, Information Coordinator, Julia Gelfand, member of the Standing Committee, .Joseph Hafner (virtual presenter of a paper via Skype during the conference), Regine Schmolling (Secretary) and two

key Mexican key note speakers: Helen Ladrón de Guevara and Rubén Martínez Rocha. The seminar activities were presentations of papers in the morning and the discussion of the possible consequences for Mexican libraries as prototype of libraries in emerging countries. Best practices from European and North American countries in terms of acquisition and collection development were explained and discussed with the seminar attendees. For the program see: http://ifla.cetys.net/FOROINGLES/index_in.html In order to express the needs of library professionals of developing countries to overcome the digital divide in terms of collection building, the workshop was planned as a kick-off seminar to build a wiki/blog on “Global trends in Acquisition and Collection Development”. The working tool should be administered and continuingly maintained by CETYS and/or IFLA LAC for librarians in emergent countries, its result being used as a prototype for African Library Associations, with a similar content in English and French. J. Fronty explained how IFLA blogs/twitter/facebook pages are maintened and recommended that the group should build up a blog or wiki and link it to the website of the seminar as starting point. The outcome in the short run will be, that workshop

participants send content on Latin American ACD topics to the section’s information coordinator to be published in our blog: http://blogs.ifla.org/acd/

On the last day on Ensenada campus practical experiences were made by building up together a seminar-wiki as an example of using working tools 2.0: http://satelliteprogramacquis.pbworks.com/w/page/34190007/Acquis%20documentos%20del%20seminario%20internacional It is maintained so far by 8 participants. All papers and powerpoint slides and seminar fotos were uploaded to the wiki. The draft of the Spanish translation of the Key Issues for E-Ressource Collection Development: A Guide to Libraries was discussed and revised by the group and has been published after the workshop meeting on the IFLA website: http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/acquisition-collection-development/publications/electronic-resource-guide-sp.pdf We shall see until end of the year what the seminar’s practical outcome (blog or wiki or contribution to the IFLA ACD blog on acquisition and collection development topics) will be and report on it in due time. July 2013 Dr. Regine Schmolling (Section 14: Acquisition and Collection Development, Secretary)
