PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As advised by letter the Club is hosting the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas on the weekend of the 16th and 17th April 2011. This promises to be an exciting time for the Club with international tennis played on our courts. Members will see increasing activity at the Club as the Tie draws closer. The Board anticipates that the impact on

members’ access to the courts and clubhouse will be minimal being in the first week of the school holidays based on previous court usage. The Board will keep you informed on our website with further developments as they become available. We are supporting Tennis Australia and to ensure that the Club presents at its best. A working bee was held on Sunday 27 March 2011 for this reason.

It is very easy to look at the Club, admire its facilities, and look forward to the future (which we do), but it is important to realize that the Club has a very rich history and the product of the club members that preceded us. On the Club’s website under “History” we have included a copy of the written address by the then Club President Jack Wilson in 1973 on the 50th Anniversary of the Club. Jack’s address provides us today with a comprehensive overview of the Club and its development from when the inaugural Board made the critical decision in 1923 to purchase freehold land in Brixton Rise Glen Iris rather than lease land from the then City of Malvern. I commend the article to you. We will be posting copies of further articles on the Club’s website so we can all share our rich history. Andrew Sucevic has taken over the development of the Club’s website so many thanks to Andrew and to Rod Paterson who has overseen the website since its development.

The torrential rains in February this year also adversely affected the Club by washing away court surfaces. The courts are being progressively repaired to bring them back to their excellent condition. There has also been some wash away from behind the crib wall facing court 9. We felt it prudent to retain engineering advice and will backfill that part of the crib wall as soon as the Tie has been completed. The rains also highlighted the capacity of the concrete surface drains running alongside the path on the top of the crib wall. These spoon drains will have to be enlarged. The club has invested in some additional chairs for the clubhouse to match our most recent purchases. We had collected different types over the years. The older ones have now been removed leaving us with modern complement of chairs.

The Glen Iris Open Championships were held over the Australia Day Week and the Championships were a great success with some excellent tennis on display at both the senior and junior levels. Thank you to Kane Dewhurst and Vince Dattoli from VIDA for the organizing the Tournament. The Board is increasingly concerned with a large body of members not looking after the courts by bagging and watering them before, during and after play. This is critical for our red porous courts and will increase their useful life before requiring repairs. Please assist your fellow members with the care of our courts.

The Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held on Monday 18 April 2011. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Meeting.

Vida Player Update

Congratulations to the following Vida Players for their efforts at the February Australian Grass Court National Titles;

• Chase Ferguson• Jamiee Fourlis• Annabelle Andrinopolous

Well done to Andrew Whittington for achieving an ATP world ranking for the first time in Feb when he progressed to the quarter finals of the Mildura International with a win over the number on seed Tsung-Hua Yang of Korea. Andrew will combine senior and junior Grand Slam events this year as he makes the transition onto the ATP tour from the ITF junior events.

Tournaments

The Glen Iris ValleyTennis Club played host to three Tennis Australia Sanctioned events in late January. The three events were all different levels; an AMT (Australian Money Tournament), an OJT (Optus Junior Tour) and a JDS (Junior Development Series). All these events are part of the Australian Ranking system or Talent Search programs.

The Glen Iris Valley Open Championships (AMT) was played by over 100 men and 50 women with last years winner Oliver Statham this year going down in the final to former Vida Tennis student Lewis Miles 7-6 4-6 7-5. The ladies final was played between Michaela Capannolo and Stef Skaras with a close straight sets win going to Michaela. Stef Skaras and her sister Maddie are new members to the club and will be playing winter pennant this season for Glen Iris.

The two junior event had record entry numbers with over 200 plays competing in the JDS and OJT events. The OJT event had a international flavour with 7 kids from China playing in the event. One of the Chinese girls, who we nicknamed “jojo,” made it through to the semi finals. The Chinese players were her to train with Vida tennis, play a tournament against the Aussie kids and visit the Australian Open.

Once again we thank our members for their understanding regrading court availability during this period. The next event being held at Glen Iris will be our Underage event in July.

Life Member?

There’s a rumor going around the club that a certain long-standing member will be granted honorary life membership of the club at the AGM on 18th April.

How does one become a life member? Turning up to working bees and making friends with the President is a good start. Also it helps if you are holding a pair of very large shears…..

Congratulations Hayden.
