Senior Spotlight
Gloria Maccherone, 75
Baltimore native, Gloria was born and raised in Charles
Village. Gloria’s passion for education was pursued through
her college studies. She receiveda B.A. in Secondary Education
from Loyola College and a M.A. in Program Administration from
Catholic University. Gloria taught in Baltimore County
schools for about 8 years before she began working for BaltimoreCity Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene. She was a Program Director in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration for over 24 years! Her focus was
on helping women and adolescents in the criminal justice system. Gloria now
volunteers twice a week as a Bykota fitness monitor.
Arpad Juhasz, 76
Arp was born in Budapest, Hungary. After the end of WWII, his family relocated to a refugee camp in Germany. Arp spent 5
years in refugee camps before his family moved to the US. He
strongly pursued his studies and received a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Seton Hall
University. During his education, Arp was enrolled in ROTC and
began his active duty in the Army after graduation. Arp was a
research chemist in the Army and worked at the Ballistic Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving
Grounds, MD. He worked at APG for 32 years before retiring. Arp is currently a member of the Bykota
Woodcarvers and mentors new artists to the group. Arp has been
a Bykota member for 14 years!

Want to Get More Fit in 2018?Get on track with your fitness goals by developing an action plan of activity, exercise and nutrition that will help you lead a healthy life. Put aside those temporary “New Year’s” resolutions and act on creating a long-term sustainable plan that balances what you eat and the energy you expend each day. The Baltimore County Department of Aging can help with an attitude and behavior makeover that maximizes your health and fitness goals. With two fitness coaches at the department’s 13 fitness centers, you can come in and get the help you need. Or you can take part in exercise classes of all kinds for all levels. Coming Soon: Aging Mastery Program® for CaregiversBCDA is very excited to offer the National Council on Aging’s Aging Mastery Program® for Caregivers this Spring. In this 12-week class, which combines goal-setting, daily practices, incentives and peer support, you will learn how to make the best of your gift of longevity as you age. Topics include Navigating Longer Lives, Exercise and You, Sleep, Healthy Eating and Hydration, Financial Fitness, Medication Management, Advance Planning, Healthy Relationships, Falls Prevention, and Community Engagement. The sustainable principles taught in the course will not only help you take care of yourself, but many will also apply to your care recipient or help you to provide better care. If you would be interested in taking this course, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. beginning February 15, 2018, please call 410-887-4724 to reserve your space. The class location will be determined based on the residency of the participants. Cost for this 12-week program is only $35 (with remaining portion subsidized by the BCDA).
Senior Box Office – Make plans for travel and educational opportunitiesSenior Box Office (SBO) offers exciting travel and entertainment opportunities to both members and non-members. Seniors age 60 and older are invited to join. Annual membership dues are $30 per household with brochures delivered electronically by email OR $38 per household with printed brochures delivered by regular mail. Seniors may call SBO at 410-887-5399 or email [email protected] to request an application.

Center Connection links persons age 60 and over who need support to activities and services provided by the senior center. Center Connection Specialists, operating in eight Baltimore County Senior Centers, maximize individual’s senior center experience by encouraging participation in activities, registering for classes/Eating Together, and connecting them with other members.

The Eating Together program provides a nutritious meal and socialization in 35 County sites in senior centers, community buildings and senior residences. Residents aged 60 and over and their spouses of any age are eligible to participate in this program and are asked to make a voluntary, confidential donation.

This community-based volunteer program provides social support to County seniors 60+ who are isolated and confined to their home. Through friendly in-home and telephone visits, volunteers offer the needed interaction, socialization and reassurance to help seniors maintain a higher quality of life with the ability to remain independent in their home longer.

Trained volunteers answer questions regarding Medicare A and B, Medicare Advangtage Plans, Medicare Supplement Insurance (medigaps), Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D), Medicaid and potential Medicare frauds. Also, callers are assessed for eligibility to obtain financial assistance to help with Medicare and prescription cost.
