We began by talking about animals. What did we know about animals and what did we wonder about them?

Different animals were provided in the science area for the students to explore with and talk about.

“We were searching on mammals. We were all choosing mammals. We were trying to figure out if mammals were mammals or weren’t.” Finnley “We are searching for mammals.” Harper We used an online encyclopedia of animals to research about animals. Together we made a list of some animals that were mammals and some we were not sure of. The website helped us to find out which were mammals as well provide information about each mammal.

“I was figuring out what kind of bones they were.”  “I was doing with him my friend. I was looking at funny book. We were finding out about mammals.”  Students also researched in books, by playing with the toys and inspecting a skull.

 What mammals do we like? What mammals don’t we like?

We played games with the mammals cards and worked on explaining our thinking.

“Drawing the mammals. Mammals has backbones, fur, blood skin.” Manawa “Mammals have warm blood, hair and has babies.” Edan The students each made a mind map to show their four favourite mammals.

“I was sticking my picture. Because I liked it. Koala.”  “First I liked the kangaroo. Then the giraffe. Voting.”

 After looking at everyone’s ideas, the 6 most popular choices were given to the students. They then had to decide which was their favourite and explain why. After most children voted, we found out another class had chosen Panda so the students who voted Panda were allowed to re-vote.
