More than 330 Aristeo employees recently gathered together for Aristeo’s Annual Safety Kickoff on Saturday, January 19th. Because of the nature of our work in construction, we consider safety to be the most important part of everyone’s job at Aristeo. Our annual Safety Kickoff is a great opportunity for the Aristeo team to collectively refresh our commitment to safety, while also celebrating our successes from the previous year.

Our safety record in recent years has been exemplary and we are committed to continuing and even improving that trend. At our event this year, we reviewed our successes from 2018, discussed new safety initiatives for 2019, shared stories from leadership across our company, and discussed the importance of safety to our clients. During lunch, we also had all of our employees sign a special “Everyone Goes Home” banner as a way to publically pledge our commitment to safety.

This year at the event we recognized all the employees who have been newly awarded the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) certification. Aristeo implemented this new safety certification in 2018, and are excited at the progress we’ve made. This certification enhanced our existing safety program, validating the knowledge that all of our front line supervisors, superintendents, foremen, and other leadership staff utilize to implement safety policies and programs on every job. As of March 2019, 50% of our eligible workforce has taken part in the STSC program.

Safety is the most critical aspect of any job, and our annual Safety Kickoff event helps reinforce the commitment of each employee on every job.

With the support of our clients and dedication of our employees, we look forward to a safe and successful 2019.

This record-setting project consists of a 14 acre campus with three attached buildings, one of which is a wind tunnel that features speeds up to 200 mph, an interchangeable single belt and five belt rolling road system, and a model motion and pressure measurement system. The two additional buildings on the campus include a wind tunnel support facility and a battery lab that will contain over 180 battery chambers, a cutting edge frontal area measurement system, and multiple offices and work areas.

At the wind tunnel building, Aristeo excavated 240,000 cubic yards of material and, by the end of the project, will have poured 22,000 cubic yards of concrete for the foundations, floors, and walls. Included in our scope of concrete services were a number of complex and unique concrete pours. One such pour was one of our largest single concrete pours at 3,000 cubic yards, completed at an impressive rate of 400 cubic yards per hour. We also poured our tallest cast in place wall to date at 48 feet tall, which included a 28 foot octagon box

out and two double curved contraction walls, one at 47 feet tall and the other at 43 feet tall.

In addition to our concrete services, Aristeo is fabricating and erecting over 2,100 tons of heavy structural steel, miscellaneous steel, and multiple sets of architectural stairs for the three buildings. The majority of the steel is for the two story battery lab building and attached support facility, which is one of Aristeo’s largest ever structural steel projects ringing in at over 1,800 tons of structural steel. For this project, Aristeo’s steel teams carefully coordinated the sequencing and scheduling of multiple crews and erection cranes across the job site. This allowed the building to be erected on multiple fronts, and prevented conflicts with the large, ongoing concrete pours.

As the project nears completion, Aristeo teams are also providing installation services, installing the main fan and the model motion and pressure management system for the wind tunnel. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in May of 2020 and, thanks to the hard work of our many teams, the project is on schedule.

Aristeo recently provided steel and concrete services for Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s 50,000 square foot addition to their Blue Springs, Mississippi Stamping Plant. Utilizing our own, in-house team of tradespeople, Aristeo self performed steel erection and concrete services for the addition’s structure, foundations, and press pit.

This project, which kicked off in December of 2017, included the construction of a 500 foot long and 100 foot wide addition with a 150 foot long pit to contain four stamping presses – and therefore expanding Toyota’s capabilities in their existing plant. The structure was built alongside the existing plant and required nearly 400 tons of structural and pit steel and 5,000 cubic yards of concrete. Aristeo also constructed an additional 2,400 square foot enclosure on the opposite side of the plant for a ramp used to move scrap metal.

Aristeo utilized a 230-ton crawler crane to erect ten 100-foot-long trusses, multiple 12,000-pound crane girders, and eight pre-cast, four-foot-square,

concrete columns weighing over 70,000 pounds each. In addition, Aristeo erected crane rail, stair, handrail, and platform steel for multiple control and access platforms.

Inside the addition, Aristeo poured 5,000 cubic yards of concrete for the project, including the 150 foot long and 18 foot deep pit, as well as the floors and foundations for the main addition and the ramp enclosure on the other side of the building. Aristeo also installed nearly 400 tons of resteel for the pit and surrounding foundations.

For this project, Aristeo utilized advanced technology including our privately-owned laser screed, allowing us to provide a flat finish within the customer’s tight tolerances. In addition, the structural portion of the addition was detailed using 3D modeling software, which allowed Aristeo employees to plan, schedule, and execute the project efficiently and safely. This project was completed on time in May of 2018 with an excellent safety record of zero recordable injuries.

Over the last year, Aristeo has been investing in GPS technology to upgrade our privately owned fleet of construction equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders, skid steers, excavators, and laser screeds. This technology allows our teams to save our clients time and money, while providing the highest quality end products by increasing our project efficiency.

Our GPS technology helps reduce wasted time and material by only moving the required amount of material, minimizing material overruns, fuel usage, and trucking costs for import and disposal charges. With our GPS-controlled equipment, Aristeo teams can input a project blueprint into the onboard machine telematics, including design surfaces, grades, and precise location of infrastructure and building coordinates. The equipment always recognizes its position on the jobsite, both geographically and in terms of elevation. The equipment can then excavate, backfill, or finish grade with an accuracy of up to a hundredth of an inch.

We can eliminate common occurrences in construction such as over-digging, backfilling with extra material, and extra passes with the equipment. Our GPS technology also reduces the amount of manpower needed to complete projects, since the equipment’s high level of accuracy eliminates the need to regularly check elevation or hire additional manpower to place and finish concrete. This allows Aristeo to re-allocate manpower elsewhere on the project.

Our investment into GPS-controlled equipment was kick-started by conversations with many of our field employees, who realized that this equipment could streamline their work processes while still providing a high quality end product. We value our experts in the field and have

implemented their recommendations by building up our arsenal of GPS-enabled equipment. We regularly follow their recommendations on which jobsites would benefit the most from using our GPS-controlled equipment, always keeping our customers’ needs in mind.

In addition to GPS-controlled technology, all of our equipment is also enabled with GPS tracking. This tracking software tells us where every piece of equipment is across all of our jobsites, as well as how many hours have been logged, and what proactive maintenance is necessary. This software is critical for our teams to efficiently track our equipment and ensure every piece is in top working order.

With the use of our GPS-controlled and GPS-tracked equipment, we can reduce costs, accelerate project schedules, improve accuracy, and continue to deliver high quality projects to our customers. We have always provided the highest quality end product, but now our customers can experience the benefits of a high quality product in less time – saving them money in the long run.

GIVING BACK OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASONOne tenet that is important to our culture at Aristeo is to give back to the communities in which we live and work.

This is especially true over the holiday season. This last holiday season Aristeo and our employees took it one step further, giving back more than we have ever before.

Toys for Tots Drive During the months of November and December last year, we hosted our annual toy drive for Toys for Tots. Thanks to our many generous employees, we donated more than 600 new, unwrapped toys – many of them donated by our employees in the field and at our remote locations.

Salvation Army Bike Donation Every year, we assist with the assembly of bikes for a major donation to the Salvation Army, but this year we took it one step further. Aristeo purchased more than 250 bikes and helmets, and held multiple “assembly days” where employees donated their time to assemble bikes for the children. Special thanks to Rush Trucking for helping deliver the bikes to a Salvation Army center near Detroit, MI.

Giving Back with our Customers Amongst all this holiday giving, Aristeo also worked with our customers to support the charitable causes that both our company and our customers mutually support. Aristeo made monetary donations to numerous charities, including The United Way, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Helmets to Hardhats, and Southeastern Michigan’s United Way Access for All Program.

Aristeo was recently recognized by two local news outlets for our business growth and success. Crain’s Detroit Business’ 2019 Book of Lists recognizes Aristeo several times, including as the #5 Largest General Contractor and the #4 Largest Woman-Owned Business. In addition, we were also featured on the Private 200, the Fast 50, and the Largest Family-Owned Business lists.

Corp! Magazine also recognized Aristeo with the 2018 Economic Bright Spot award, which honors those companies that thrive in economic growth, expansion, and hiring of Michigan’s brightest talent.

We’re proud of all of these recognitions and are grateful for all of the crucial hard work of our employees.

At Aristeo, the size and availability of our labor force is critical to our company and our clients’ success. We’re proud to have a labor force that is 700+ people strong across seven skilled trades and our office staff. However, we are always recruiting and looking for new talent to join our team – as well as focusing on retaining the talent we already have.

When it comes to talent acquisition in the construction industry, we believe that casting a wide net throughout the workforce is key. We attend dozens of different recruiting events throughout the year, and are heavily involved in numerous industry associations that focus on strengthening curricula and career development with multiple skilled trade disciplines. As our President, Michelle Aristeo Barton, explained in the Winter 2019 issue of The Construction User magazine, Aristeo understands that a key part of increasing our workforce is being fully inclusive of the entire working population.

“With the current economy, companies across industries are competing for the best talent,” stated Barton. “The best way for the construction industry to attract

this coveted talent is to be inclusive of all potential populations, especially those diverse populations that make up large segments of the total working population or are rapidly growing. We can increase our potential to find the best talent by encouraging diversity across backgrounds, experiences, and industries.”

While recruiting from as many sources as possible has been critical to our success, so has retention and training of our existing employees. Our Aristeo University training program offers in-house classes on safety, skilled trades, quality compliance, software, and leadership skills. In 2018, our employees logged a record number of training hours, nearly double the amount from 2017. This multitude of training resources has helped our employees grow both professionally and personally. In addition, our expansive benefits package and welcoming culture has engendered many employees to become long term members of our team.

These strategies combined have created a welcoming and fulfilling atmosphere that makes our employees want to stay and ensures our project teams have the best talent for our clients.
