HUBS FOR FRESH PRODUCE

When most people are still asleep in the cities, the wholesale markets are busy turning nightinto day. The markets are a hive of activity.Vast amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables fromnational growers, especially those near themarket, and from all over the world are shipped

WE ARE AT THE CENTRE OF FRESHNESS

Wholesale markets are atthe centre of the chain ofadded value for fresh foodsand flowers. This is wheregrowers, wholesalers andimporters meet the buyersfrom shops and restaurantswho want the best for theircustomers. And customerrelations are very important, because delivering tocustomers is part of theservice where freshness isconcerned.

P Grown around theworld, sold in the region

Regional, national andoverseas growers supplyproduce to the importersand wholesalers based atthe wholesale markets. The wholesale marketis the sales channel of choice for growers whoattach great importance to the quality andfreshness of the produce and value the profes-sional advice and trading skills of the companiesat the wholesale markets and their customers.

P Companies based at the markets

Most sellers are wholesalers and importers.Possessing great professionalism andexperience, they are able to handle largevolumes of every kind of perishable food fromall parts of the world. Many of the companiestrading on the wholesale markets have beenowned and operated by the same family forseveral generations. The entire range of services connected withthe produce is available. The market tradersare highly competitive because they put thecustomer first and offer the latest logisticstechnology and services. Regional growers havestands at many wholesale markets to sell freshlypicked seasonal produce: “From the region –for the region” is the guiding principle –cutting transport time and costs.

P The buyers

Among the customers whobuy from the varied rangeat the wholesale market areindependent retailers, streetmarket traders, hotels, restaurants, chain storebranches and bulk buyersfor hospitals, communitycentres, fast-food outletsand canteens

P The experts forhealthy eating

Without the wholesalemarkets, consumers wouldfind their quality of lifediminished. Because thepeople who buy produceat the wholesale marketpay close attention to …

to and from the markets. Whatever the season, there is no shortage here – and everything isof top quality. Other types of food are on offerbesides fruit and vegetables, so that retailerscan obtain a large part of their range of freshproduce from the market

• FreshnessEverything is geared to freshness at wholesalemarkets. The markets ensure that fruit andvegetables from all over the world and thelocal region are taken straight to the shops,so the consumer can buy them while theyare fresh.

• VarietyYou name it, the market has it. The fivecontinents of the earth rub shoulders inthese urban centres, to offer whateverthe consumer desires, from A as in appleto Z as in zucchini.

• QualityHere the wholesale markets leave nothingto chance. For good reason. After all, thepeople who trade here are all proven experts– people who set very high standards andfor whom only the best is good enough. That is why freshly harvested produce isfirst subjected to a number of officialinspections.
