Dear friends from around the world,
When we look back at how the Humboldt-Institut has developed in the past several years, we are filled with a sense of gratitude and pride. Our new year-round school for adults in Berlin-Mitte has delighted us with huge increases in the numbers of bookings, and the feedback from our guests has been outstanding: they express appreciation and praise, especially for the outstanding location in the capital city, the high quality standards of the classes and accommo-dations and our dedicated team on site.
We have also given our popular school in Konstanz a fresh new look: we have renovated the dining room and set up a new TV and party room.
The boarding schools for children and teenagers in Lindenberg and Bad Schussenried are well attended throughout the year, and in the summer they are even completely sold out. As a result, we have expanded the circle of the places we offer summer courses for teen-agers by adding a very attractive venue:
In Duesseldorf (p. 34) we will now offer an intensive course for 14- to 17-year-olds in July; the course can be booked for two or four weeks. Our ultramodern accommodations are located directly on the Rhine with a view of the old town, providing students top standards in one of Ger-many’s most attractive major cities. Duesseldorf is regarded as a cultural metropolis, and it is full of magnificent contrasts – everything from historical landmark houses and monuments to spectacular postmodern architecture such as the famous Gehry buildings in the media harbor. In the past several years, Duesseldorf has made a name for itself as a city with one of the highest quality-of-life rankings in Germany. There is a wide variety of different ways to spend a wonderful summer there.
By adding the Duesseldorf location, we are expanding our course catalog to include a total of four year-round schools and 12 summer schools. These courses are designed for a broad selection of target groups ranging from children to managers. In addition to our inten-sive courses, we also hold lessons in business German as well as pre-paratory courses for attending school in Germany as well as for the TestDaF for international students.
Do we have the perfect course for you in our program this year as well? We would be pleased to welcome you to Humboldt-Institut in 2016!
Yours,
Norbert Güthling Lennart Güthling

Why study German at the Humboldt-Institut?
The Humboldt-Institut e. V. is a non-profit association established in 1977 for teach-ing German as a foreign language. In the three-plus decades of its existence, over 60,000 students from 160 countries have taken part in the institute’s intensive German courses. From a single course center at Ratzenried Castle – which serves as its administration headquarters now-adays – the Humboldt-Institut has grown to a network of 16 program sites through-out Germany. Ever since it was first founded, the Humboldt-Institut has grown steadily. Its success is based on helping support each student individually:
• An extensive placement test on the first day of the course determines the students' knowledge of German in detail, allowing them to be placed at the best possible level.
• In placing the students, the Humboldt- Institut does not make convenient compromises; instead, it tries to close gaps in the students' language skills, because the small linguistic nuances are what make the difference in achieving perfection.
• Weekly progress monitoring supports the learning process.
• No other school is faster and more efficient in preparing students for internationally recognized language certification such as the “TestDaF“ exam or the “telc Deutsch B1” exam (“Zertifikat Deutsch”).
Das Humboldt - Institut
5
• At the Humboldt-Institut a total beginner with no previous German skills can successfully complete the TestDaF exam in as little as 7.5 months.
• Courses at the Humboldt-Institut are taught in small groups averaging 8 - 10 participants by highly motivated native speakers with outstanding qual-ifications. Courses generally cover 30 lessons per week (with one lesson equaling 45 minutes).
• Most of the schools of the Humboldt- Institut are residential schools, which enhances not only the learning process, but also the enjoyment of the common experience.
• All prices are transparent, as course fees include tuition, teaching material, accommodation, full board, leisure time activities and excursions for most of the course centers of the Humboldt-Institut.
• In 16 course centers all over Germany the Humboldt-Institut tailors its classes to the needs of the target groups (from 8-year-old juniors to business executives).
• The Humboldt-Institut offers German courses that prepare students for the next step in their education, regardless of the path they choose (secondary edu-cation, university, profession).
• The Humboldt-Institut guarantees a swift and thorough learning process due to its total immersion program and reliable tutoring. This way course partic-ipants learn German faster and hence get more for their money!
Intensive Course over ChristmasIn its year-round course centers the Humboldt-Institut also offers courses over Christmas and New Year. Long-term students may deepen their language knowledge during these two weeks before the start of a new course level in January.

Types of ProgramsOne of the Humboldt-Institut’s strengths is the intensity of instruction due to the high amount of lessons per week as well as the small class sizes. The following types of programs are available:Intensive Courses 30 lessons per week Junior Intensive Courses andSummer Courses 25 lessons per week Mini Group Courses 40 lessons per weekOne-to-one Intensive Courses 25, 30 and 40 lessons per weekClassesClasses are held Monday through Friday except on bank holidays. One-to-one and mini group courses are taught regardless of bank holidays. Each class lasts for 45 minutes and is usually attended by 8 to 10 participants, in mini groups by 2 to 4 par-ticipants. Classroom instruction focuses on listening and reading comprehension, writ-ing skills, speaking skills and grammar.Bank Holidays (Without Lessons)January 1, October 3, November 1, 2016Finding the Right LevelAll students are expected to take a placement test on the first day of their course. Based on their results students will be assigned to a class of their language level. During the summer months the first day is reserved for the place-ment test, i. e., the rest of the day is generally for orientation without instruction. We distinguish the following 6 levels according to the Common European Framework of Refer-ence for Languages (CEFR):Level DurationA1 Elementary 1 5 weeks also for total beginners
A2 Elementary 2 5 weeks B1 Intermediate 1 5 weeks leads to telc Deutsch B1
B2.1 Intermediate 2.1 5 weeksB2.2 Intermediate 2.2 5 weeks leads to telc Deutsch B2
C1.1 Advanced 1.1 5 weeks leads to TestDaF
C1.2 Advanced 1.2 5 weeks leads to telc Deutsch C1
C2.1 Advanced 2.1 5 weeksC2.2 Advanced 2.2 5 weeks total duration 45 weeksThe duration is based on courses with 30 lessons per week.
Online Placement TestIf you wish to test your German skills in advance, you may do so by taking our online placement test (www.humboldt-institut.org). However, the online test is not a substitute for the placement test which is held on the first day of classes.
TeachersOur teachers are highly trained native speakers with university degrees, who use modern teaching methods.Teaching MaterialThe Humboldt-Institut provides its students with all the teaching material they need in class at no charge.HomeworkTeachers regularly assign homework so that students can build upon what they have learned and be prepared for class. Homework assignments are of reasonable size so that students still have plenty of time for extracurricular activities. Written homework is corrected and handed back to students so that they can monitor their progress.Weekly and Skill-level TestsParticipants in all programs take a weekly test so that students and teachers can assess the progress made during the pre-ceding week. Comprehensive exams are written at the conclusion of each level.

Accommodation and BoardStudents are generally housed in residential schools and well-maintained boarding houses. Students in Meersburg, Lindenberg and Berlin City also stay with host families. Full board is included in the course fee for most of our program sites.
CertificatesAt the end of the program all participants are awarded a certificate confirming the number of lessons attended as well as the skill level that the student has achieved. Grades are given for listening and reading comprehension, oral and written expres-sion and grammar skills.TransfersTransfers to and from the airport are done as group transfers. However, efforts are made to keep the waiting time of indi-vidual students down to no more than one hour. Please inquire about the fees for transfers which take place outside of the traditional arrival and departure days (Sunday / Saturday).
SupervisionIn addition to organizing after-class activities and motivating even shy students to participate, our program supervisors make sure that participants are comfort-able and content. They maintain a positive, committed attitude towards all of the students’ questions and concerns, making sure that program rules are observed day and night at locations hosting children and teenagers, while guaranteeing reliable, round-the-clock supervision for all under-age students.

telc ExaminationsThe telc (The European Language Certifi-cates) company is an internationally recog-nized test provider that worked with the Goethe-Institut to develop the well-known “Zertifikat Deutsch” (ZD) exam, now known as the telc Deutsch B1 exam. Language certifications are geared towards the Com-mon European Framework of Reference for Languages, making them internationally comparable and improving students’ educa-tional and professional opportunities.
telc Deutsch A1 - C1These general language exams let you show how well you have mastered the German language in daily situations, such as trips, leisure activities or at work. Each exam con-sists of a written individual test as well as an oral exam conducted with another student or in a group.
telc Deutsch A1 JuniorThe child-friendly format of this exam is geared towards our youngest learners. The test does not take long to complete, which, along with its use of pictures and its simple and easy-to-understand tasks, tailors it to the cognitive abilities of children.
telc Deutsch Schule Since their format corresponds to that of general language exams, these exams for secondary school students are equivalent to the more general exams. The telc Deutsch Schule exams, however, also cover subject matters geared specifically to young peo-ple’s life and to what they know, i. e., their leisure time, their friends or what it is like to live in another country. A telc exam also allows young people to demonstrate their commitment, interest and determination.
telc Deutsch BerufGeared specifically towards professionals, these exams are designed with an eye to the format of the general language exams. Not only will this additional certification allow you to demonstrate your language skills to HR representatives – it will also showcase your initiative and dedication.
9
telc Deutsch C1 HochschuleThis exam is geared towards adults who would like to demonstrate their German language skills because they wish to begin studying, are already studying or hope to work in an academic field at a German university. This exam tests advanced German skills needed at university level.

TestDaF (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache”)The TestDaF exam demonstrates that a candidate has sufficient German skills for admission to a German university if he or she earns the minimum TestDaF level of 4 in each of the four exam sections. As a standardized exam for meeting university language requirements, the TestDaF is the equivalent of the DSH exam, while offering numerous other advantages: Students may take the exam as many times as they wish and, thanks to the uniformity of the exam, they can target specific areas as they prepare (see TestDaF Preparatory Courses).
The TestDaF also provides evidence of language ability for anyone who wants to do research in Germany or who wants to document high language skills.Humboldt students with no prior know-ledge of German would need roughly 7.5 months to reach the required level of language skills. For those participants who have completed level C1.1, we strongly recommend our special, two-week TestDaF preparatory course, which builds upon their language skills. The Humboldt-Institut has licensed testing centers in Constance and Berlin.

Experience two citiesWith the combination of courses in Berlin and Constance our learners have the incom-parable opportunity to experience two uniquely distinct university towns which demon-strate the diversity of Germany in landscape and in culture. Berlin – Germany’s capital and by far largest city – impresses with more than 3.4 million inhabitants and an incredible variety of sights and cultural offers. Constance, however, seems to be unhurried and laid-back with only 85,000 inhabitants, while it is rated as one of Germany’s towns with the highest quality of life due to its gorgeous location right next to Lake Constance and its proximity to Switzerland and the Alps. With our combination offer you can sample and immerse yourself into these two cities in two very different regions of Germany within only a short time.

The CitiesManagers can choose from one of two locations to learn German: the capital city of Berlin (3.4 mill. inhabitants), a dynamic center of internationally-oriented economic, cultural and educational activity, or the charming village of Bad Schussenried in the southern part of the country. In both places, we offer intensive German courses which are individually cus-tomized: either at a contemporary building in the downtown Mitte district of metropolitan Berlin (see p. 12,ff) or on a large campus in the historic cloister town of Bad Schussenried (p. 22), surrounded by a magnificent landscape and enchanting tranquility.

The ConceptWith the job market becoming increasingly networked and globalized, successfully earn-ing a college degree in your home country no longer guarantees a job. International and intercultural skills are in demand throughout the world, and studying in Germany gives international students a clear edge over their competitors on the international job market. “Made in Germany” is a synonym for quality all over the world. Plus, besides its reputation for top quality and ideal research opportunities, studying in Germany is also relatively inexpensive compared to other countries. Invest in your future today – studying in Ger-many will open up international opportunities.
The ProgramThe Humboldt-Institut provides consultation and support to interested international students seeking university placement in Germany. We will review your high-school or other academic records from your home countries and determine whether you qualify for direct or indirect (i. e., with a preparatory course) university admission in Germany. Prospective students can attend our year-round centers in Constance and Berlin to attain the language skills they need for university admission within a very short period of time. By staying at one of our boarding schools, you will not only experience a markedly inter-national, German-language immersion environment, you will also be able to focus all of your concentration on your German studies – full room and board, advisers and organized leisure activities are all included in the course fees.

Known as much for its spas, therapeutic peat pulp baths and the natural beauty of its surroundings as it is for its cultural monuments, this attractive resort in the heart of Upper Swabia is an ideal starting point for a wide variety of excursions. The Humboldt-Institut is housed in a modern building complex on the edge of a magnifi-cent park. Providing space where up to 300 students from all over the world can live and study, makes Bad Schussenried Germany’s largest residential school for studying German as a foreign language. The CityVienna, the city with the highest quality of life in the world, unites tradition and modernityin its own unique way. With 1.7 million inhabitants, Vienna is both Austria’s capital and its largest city – and the site of the first Humboldt-Institut program in neighboring Austria. A true highlight of this program site is the location of our German courses: on board of a school ship right along the Danube island! After class, Vienna also offers what may be the world’s finest cultural scene: besides the old town and Schoenbrunn Palace, both of which are UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, Vienna also boasts countless royal residences and palaces, museums, famous buildings and landmarks, the most internationally known of which are St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Ferris wheel in the Prater park. But architec-tural monuments are not all that Vienna has to offer: Coffeehouses, Sachertorte, Wiener Schnitzel and the Naschmarkt – the city’s wide variety of attractions cater to every taste!

We are pleased to offer a German course that you can take at the same location as your child. Held in the mornings, your class will be separate from the children‘s classes, as the course contents will be different: children‘s courses aim to improve all of the language skills your child will need later on when taking German classes at home; the objective for parents, however, is to teach practical German that will be useful for everyday life. Course offerings cover levels A1 through A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. While you will be housed separately from the children (in private rooms in the castle) and participate, in some cases, in separate recreational activities, weekend excursions will be offered for parents and children together.

The ConceptGoing to school and living abroad for a period of time fosters adolescents’ develop-ment and ensures a successful future for them in a job market that is becoming more and more international – studying in Germany would enhance any resume. Our “Going to school in Germany“ program is geared towards highly motivated students between ten and seventeen years of age, and offers them the chance to participate in regular classes in German boarding schools. Living amongst German classmates, these teenagers enhance their language skills and prepare to pass the “Abitur”, which is required for university admittance in Germany.
PrerequisitesBesides having to demonstrate generally above average academic performance, foreign candidates must also have
sufficient knowledge of the German lan-guage to be admitted to a German school. This is why they are asked first of all to attend an intensive German language course for several months at our language center in Bad Schussenried (see page 22) or in Lindenberg (see page 24). Having completed level B2, students are then transferred to a boarding school and inte-grated in a class according to their age and performance level.
Preparatory Courses in Bad Schussenried and in LindenbergOur schools in Lindenberg and in Bad Schussenried offer our students ideal con ditions to feel at ease and get used to a life in Germany. High-quality courses paired with a small number of students per class assure that students pick up the language quickly and thoroughly.
Secondary Education in Germany

Program ScheduleDepending on their prior skill level, students will need approx. two to six months to reach the required level of German (completion of Humboldt level B2). Afterwards, we offer a 5-week preparatory course (see page 50).
After this, foreign students transfer to a German boarding school. The Humboldt-Institut cooperates with highly respected boarding schools throughout Germany and will gladly help students find the right school.

Schulvorbereitungs kurs

School Preparatory Course ages 13 -17
The ConceptAfter having successfully completed Hum-boldt level B2, our students will be able to continue their education in Germany at a Gymnasium. Here they can complete their leaving exams (see p. 48 / Secondary Education in Germany), which will qualify them for admission to a German university. In order to ease the transition between the German course and school attendance, we offer a special preparatory course aimed at teaching the terminology and methodol-ogy in the most important subject areas taught in school.
ContentThe school preparatory course is organ-ized into subject area modules such as the natural sciences (mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry) and the humanities (history, politics, geography, religion). The fine arts are covered as well. In addition to acquiring important technical vocabulary, students also learn how to summarize texts, work with sources, perform research and give presentations.
Role-playing simulation games and project work also teach students how to work in group settings.
Prerequisites• Students may only enrol after the completion of Humboldt level B2

The SchoolThe Lindenberg Gymnasium (grades 5 - 12) offers two distinct educational tracks, one oriented towards language and one towards the natural sciences and technology. In addition to pure classroom instruction – instruction that meets the highest profes-sional and pedagogical standards – the school also aims to educate its students to become engaged, tolerant and responsible human beings. Viewed from this perspec-tive, school becomes a place that offers students life experience and helps them shaping their personalities. Students are not only encouraged to perform well and develop their talents – social responsibility, environmental consciousness and respect also play critical roles in the school community.
Academic Facilities and Services• Large spectrum of elective courses and work groups• Tutoring for homework• Conflict mediation team• Computer rooms and IT training• Library• School cafeteria• International student exchange program• Study trips
The Boarding SchoolStudents are housed at the Humboldt-Institut boarding school in Lindenberg (see p. 24). The boarding school provides an attractive infrastructure and offers sup-port services that cater to the special needs of the students. These benefits will help young people to integrate quickly into daily life in Germany, while nurturing their continued language development and – most importantly – helping them to estab-lish and maintain social contacts. Besides their academic achievement, living and studying in a German environment with an international, cosmopolitan atmosphere also fosters the students’ personal develop-ment.
Boarding School Concept• Mentor program• German language support program• Supervised leisure activities & planned excursions• 24-hour supervision• After-school sponsorship with German students• Activities with German students, e. g. conversation partners, English Club
