Mayor and Councillor representation from 2017 The Local Government election for Georges River Council will take place in September 2017.

Council will have 15 elected Councillors across five wards, with three Councillors per ward.

The Mayor of Georges River Council will be elected by Councillors for a period of two years.

Council Elections: Saturday 9 September 2017

A MESSAGE FROM THE AdMINISTRATORAs Georges River Council passes the half-way mark between the

establishment of Council and the September 2017 election of new Councillors, it is evident there have been many community benefits resulting from amalgamation.

Over the past eight months, Council has taken significant steps towards building a more efficient organisation with a focus on delivering higher quality and better integrated services and facilities for its residents.

Already our buying power has saved $520,000 in insurance and road-resheeting costs and these savings will be reinvested back into the community.

The 2017/18 Budget will include an increase in capital works and will bring forward many projects which have been on the agenda for years. These include finalising the upgrade of Forest Road, Hurstville, new sports amenities buildings and improved accessibility to public toilets.

Other merger achievements include: • An additional rebate has been provided to the 3,300

pensioners in the previous Kogarah City Council at a cost of $250,000

• More funding assistance for community groups - increasing from $147,000 to $200,000

• An expanded graffiti removal service which covers the whole local government area

• Expanded childcare centres with more accessibility, which offers greater choice for families

• Agreement with the St George Business Chamber to better support small business

• Expanded customer service transactions so that customers can choose to make payments or request services at either Kogarah or Hurstville Service Centres.

Council has also committed to extensive community engagement for the development of new Council policies and initiatives, such as the draft Venue Hire Grant Policy and the new Council logo.

From March, a series of open discussions with Council’s General Manager Gail Connolly, senior staff and myself will commence, providing an opportunity for the community to come and share their feedback on Council matters.

If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, I encourage you to write to me or to call Council.

Easy to do Business ProgramIn partnership with Service NSW and Georges River Council, the NSW State Government has recognised that there is a significant opportunity to refocus on small business by developing the Easy to do Business Program. The project aims to streamline the application and approval processes for new and existing businesses by ensuring that they only have to enter data once thereby enabling them to get up and running sooner. The program will be launched in February 2017 as part of Back to Business Week.

Butler Reserve Raingarden and Nature PlaygroundWork on the Butler Reserve Raingarden and Nature Playground in Margaret Street, Kingsgrove is now complete.

The raingarden captures and treats stormwater from a 2.65 hectare residential catchment including the adjacent Kingsgrove Public School and high school.

Georges River Council worked together with the Cooks River Alliance to undertake the environmental improvement works at Butler Reserve. The work involved the construction of a 185 metre squared bioretention system to filter and treat stormwater draining to Wolli Creek from the upstream catchment.

The raingarden, which is a best practice example of Water Sensitive Urban Design, will remove approximately 49% of nitrogen, 52% of total phosphorous and 82% of total suspended solids from the water treated within the system. This will greatly improve the quality of water being discharged to Wolli Creek from beneath the park.

The project has vastly improved the amenity of the reserve for the local community as it included the integration of a nature based playground to link the raingarden with the play area. Over 24 mature native trees and 4,616 smaller plants and shrubs were installed which will result in enhanced biodiversity within the reserve. New solar lighting has also been installed along with additional seating and shade trees.

The project was jointly funded by Council and the Cooks River Alliance via funding received from the Australian Government.

Anti-graffiti Task Force SuccessGeorges River Council is combating the instances of graffiti across the local government area through a newly expanded anti-graffiti task force.

Since 1 July 2016, a total of 1,200 graffiti tags have been removed in the local area, with 85% of tags removed within 72 hours.

This initiative has been made possible due to the recent amalgamation of the former Hurstville and Kogarah City Councils as greater resources are available to remove graffiti from private property and known hot spots across the local area.

Council is committed to actively reducing the instance of unsightly graffiti in our community to ensure the area is kept visually appealing for residents and visitors.

To report graffiti, contact Council by calling 9330 6400, 24 hours a day, seven days a week or via email at [email protected].

2017 Waste and Recycling Calendar

Have you received your 2017 Waste and Recycling Calendar?

This year Council changed the way we distribute the waste and recycling calendar to households. By only printing 8,000 copies of the calendar instead of 27,000 Council saved 76 reams of paper and 4,636 litres of water.

Council is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and improving communication efficiency.

If you would like a copy of the 2017 Waste and Recycling Calendar contact Council’s Service Centre on 9330 6400 to arrange for a copy to be mailed out to you or visit Council’s website www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au under Waste Services to download a copy.
