Dear Friends,

We believe in the power of connecting people to nature, and with your financial support and volunteer time and expertise in 2018, we created new ways for people of all ages, abilities, and interests to get outdoors. Thank you!

• As part of the Georges Highland Path, our 60-mile regional trail system, we built the first beginner mountain bike trail in the area. Kids, families, and all adventurous types can now experience the thrill that this fast-growing sport provides.

• Over 1,000 people visited the Langlais Sculpture Preserve from all across the country; it continues to be a popular destination for art and nature lovers. We also shared Blackie’s legacy with 85 elementary school children in after-school and summer camp programs.

• We conserved more than 150 acres of productive farmland and forest habitat, bringing our total to 3,935 acres of protected mid-coast Maine landscape.

• Hundreds of people came along on our monthly Walks and Talks, an outdoor lecture series that brings experts to our preserves to share their knowledge. Topics from invasive species control to sustainable forestry enticed people to come out, meet others, and learn more about the natural world.

We love this part of Maine—it is a place of incredible beauty and richness. When people are connected to this landscape, they care what happens to it. We’re thankful for your participation in our work to conserve and steward the land, and to create meaningful ways for people to experience it. Together, we build a sustainable, healthier, and happier community.

With thanks for your support,

Meg Rasmussen Alvin ChaseExecutive Director Board President

With more than 225 square miles in its watershed, Georges River Land Trust wisely invests its resources in conservation efforts that are most valuable to the community, now and in the future.

Faced with changes to our landscape because of rising temperatures, seas, and shifting patterns of vegetation and wildlife, we took a hard look at our conservation priorities this year, with an eye to making sure our next 20 years of conservation practices will complement what we have already accomplished, and support our landscape’s resiliency to climate change.

SAVING LANDS OF INCREDIBLE BEAUTY AND RICHNESS

Georges River Land Trust impacts individuals, families, and the regional community through land and farm conservation and student programming.

GRLT intern Amanda Chen, high school student at the School of Math and Science in Limestone and a member of Trekkers, grew up in Thomaston but had no real knowledge of what land trusts do. Through her one-week internship with us she felt she learned firsthand “how a land trust determines the value of land for conservation.” Thank you, Amanda!

Farmers Oliver and Kelly Perkins purchased and conserved 125 acres of fields, blueberry barrens, and woodlands on the slopes of Philbrook Mountain in Hope with the assistance of Maine Farmland Trust and Georges River Land Trust. The mutually beneficial project protected the farmland from development, while ensuring local farming continues in the midcoast area.

With GRLT’s help, eight Walker siblings added more than 40 acres to their previously conserved 100+ acres of woodland, fields, and streams in Owls Head. The generational commitment of the family is a testament to conservation, protecting history, and ensuring open spaces for future generations to enjoy.

TRAILS BRING US TOGETHER

Our initiative, Connecting to Community Forests, began with installation of the first phase of multi-use trails in the Thomaston Town Forest. The local conservation commission, trail runners, mountain bikers, and Oceanside Middle School joined us to create the first beginner bike trail in the area. This project supports the new Riding for Focus program at Oceanside Middle School, for which the school received a grant for 36 mountain bikes, a curriculum, and staff training. The students helped build the trail and can now ride straight from school to the trail for fun and exercise. This trail is open four seasons thanks to the new Snow Dog groomer that has been running all winter.

New trail at Cross Cushing Nature Preserve. Local community members came together to save this land from development. In 2018, the trails committee installed a parking area and a 1.1-mile trail leading hikers through mature spruce forests over Robbins Mountain.

Appleton Forestry Trail Opens. Led by Jim Robbins, the trails committee installed a 20-station educational trail in the Appleton Preserve to teach hikers about sustainable management of our forests. The Appleton Preserve is 124 acres with over a mile of riverfront and year-around access.

WALKS AND TALKS

Each month Georges River Land Trust presents an educational and recreational outreach program for its members and guests, inviting everyone to come outside and take a guided hike with us on one of the extraordinary pieces of land they have helped us conserve. Sometimes these programs involve a paddle on a beautiful stretch of the St. George River, or a sail along the coast. Other times we might partner with a school or library or brewery to bring noteworthy speakers to some key audiences upriver in the hill towns that form our middle and upper watershed.

We kicked off Memorial Day weekend with a paddle on Lake St. George in Liberty, followed by the launch party of our new brew, Headwaters, at Lake St. George Brewing Company.Out scouting for warblers in May.

PROVIDING PUBLIC ACCESS

Twelve years ago we set out to conserve the iconic landscape along Route 131 in South Thomaston. To date we have protected 584 acres of wildlife habitat, traditionally farmed hayfields, and riverfront scenery. In 2018 we put plans in place to add just enough amenities—parking, footbridge over wetland, timely-mowed trail to protect and enjoy the roosting Bobolinks, picnic pavilion, interpretive panels, and a bench or two beside the river—to create an easy-walking community footpath and scenic resting spot for all to enjoy.

Picnic pavilion designed by Phi Builders + Architects for future installation on the Bobolink Trail at Riverview Hayfields.

LANGLAIS SCULPTURE PRESERVE WHERE ART, NATURE, AND EDUCATION CONVERGE

The Langlais Afterschool Program offers quality arts and environmental programming to students from Cushing Community School, grades 1-5, who arrive by bus, full of exuberance at the magical sculpture preserve, throughout the school year. All children attend free of cost, thanks to grant funding and member donations. This innovative programming inspires local children to be mindful with resources and each other, respectful of the environment, motivated by creativity, and connected by a deep sense of place.

• Our conservation efforts are enhanced by cultivating awareness with a new generation of artists and environmentalists

• Our intent is to be a zero-waste facility, teaching youth about the importance of conserv-ing resources

• Our goal is to illuminate the connection between art and landscape

One of a dozen Tibetan monks who spent a week at Langlais Sculpture Preserve constructing a sand mandala is shown here in a ceremony blessing the St. George River.

ALL THE BUZZ!

In 2018 the land trust’s Wet Paint on the Weskeag annual summer benefit evolved into ALL THE BUZZ! – a wonderful soiree and art auction at Langlais Sculpture Preserve.

GARDENS IN THE WATERSHED

For 27 years Georges River Land Trust has presented its GARDENS IN THE WATERSHED tour to great acclaim. Each July we invite our members and friends to join us on a truly magical journey from woodland to hayfield to coastal ledge, where magnificent plots and vistas await.
