GEOLOGICAL T-L-I Ternary System OutlineThe truth-lie-ignorance (T-L-I) system in geology ranges from orthotruth to
metaignorance, as shown in the graph below and accompanying glossary. This epitruthfulsystem is from GEOLOG, the newsletter of the Geological Association of Canada.
Glossary
ORTHOTRUTH - the real truth; withstands the most severe scrutiny. Rare in geology.
PARATRUTH - usually quantitative, well documented coincidence of several lines of evidence,but based in part on a supposition which may, in the future, prove to be incorrect. it is usually confused by most with orthotruth.
MONOTRUTH - a hypothesis or idea not seriously contested, at present, by others.
EPITRUTH - one hypothesis or interpretation among several others.
HEMITRUTH - a halftruth, shows only one side of the picture.
NEOTRUTH - a paleotruth quickly redressed by using the fashionable recent rhetorics. PALEOTRUTH - an archaic truth proved to be no longer valid. Common with geologists whose knowledge has remained frozen since time of graduation
METATRUTH - any higher order of truth knowingly metamorphosed to suit ones preconceivedidea.
COTRUTH - a truth based upon an evidence by comparison, when the standard is not commensurable with the compared subject.

ORTHOLIE - (or PSEUDOTRUTH as used by gentlemen geologists and old-schoolJapanese): a straightforward lie. It is rare in western geology. It has appeared from time to timein dogmatic and totalitarian societies.
HEMILIE - lie with a great deal of uncertainty.
ORTHOIGNORANCE - (or "different Opinion" by gentlemen): the zero knowledge withoutsmokescreen.
EPI-IGNORANCE - the ignorant unaware (but the audience aware) of his ignorance
PROTOIGNORANCE - the ignorant aware of his ignorance but trying to make his listenersunaware.
