Northeastern Native Americans

The Iroquois Confederacy was an alliance of Native American groups that spoke similar languages.

The groups lived near each other in what is now New York State, in the Great Lakes region, surrounded

by forests, lakes and mountains.

The Iroquois call themselves the Haudenosaunee, meaning “people of the longhouse.” Longhouses

were dwellings large enough to house several families. They were made from a wooden frame covered

with tree bark. Nearby forests also provided materials the Iroquois used to make bark containers and

wooden canoes. Walls of upright poles were often put up around villages to keep out intruders.

The Iroquois hunted, fished, gathered wild foods, and raised corn, beans, and squash. Women were

responsible for tending the crops. The groups of hunters temporarily moved to the forests to hunt deer.

Spring runs of fish drew families to nearby streams and lake inlets, where canoes were a common form

of transportation.
