The Student Government Association serves as representation for all Genesee Community College students and their collective interests. SGA promotes the cultural, educational and social needs of the Campus Community. Also, this governing body takes responsibility in the decision-making process at the College.

Academic Committees Student Government members get to be on academic committees. As a Student Government representative you have a voice in academics at Genesee. Most other colleges do not allow students to be on academic committees. • Curriculum – An exciting committee about curriculum changes proposed by Genesee faculty. • Academic Standards – An interesting committee that deals with maintaining high standards for all students. If you sit on this committee you will be involved in the probation appeals process. • Student Success – This committee is important because you will be involved in making sure that your fellow students graduate on time and have good academic progress. • Academic Innovations – In this committee you will consider proposals for extraordinary items and ideas that professors have and for which they need funding.

YOUR FUTUREStudent Government is a fantastic resume builder - a must-mention in any job interview. This experience will give you references that you can use for permanent employment, such as the Dean of Students, Director and Assistant Director of Student Activities, Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services, and many more.

Special CommitteesStudent Government has several special committees that allow us to reach out to the College Community at large. • Food Service – This committee meets with the Food Service Manager, Vice President of Finance, a cook, and an advisor to talk about food service options, prices, venues, and other needs. • Off-Campus Representative – This committee connects with the persons at each of the Campus Centers and relays Minutes from our meetings to them. • LASTING RELATIONSHIPSThe friends you make in high school might come and go. On Student Government, we know that the friends we have will last us a lifetime. We work so closely with our advisors that Student Government becomes very much like an extended family.

BUDGET Student Government creates the activity fee budget for all clubs and organizations on Campus. It is an extremely interesting process looking through what has been done over the past year and what clubs have requested for the upcoming year. Then, the task is to decide how much each club can get. Once you do the Student Government budget you will be able to do any budget forever!

PUBLIC SPEAKING Most people are at least a little frightened by public speaking. Talking in front of a group of people is the #1 fear in the world. Student Government will allow you to talk to people in a comfortable environment. You will start out talking to our group in meetings, but develop into being able to talk in front of committees, small groups of people, and even larger crowds of people. Public speaking will not be a fear for you anymore.

CONFERENCES We go on a variety of state, regional and national conferences for Student Government. We stay in hotels and have a good time there. There are lots of fun comedy skits and educational opportunities during the conferences.

TECHNOLOGY You will learn how to do PowerPoint like a pro! Have you used the Smart Board before in class? You will learn how to use a Smart Board on Student Government, as well as Microsoft Publisher to aid in making signs to advertise our events.
