Currently, GEC enrolls 150 students in grades 9 through 13. The school opened in the fall of 2007 and graduated its first class in the spring of 2010. College adheres closely to the six (6) design principles of Early College High Schools.

CurriculumThe academic program is a college preparatory curriculum that focuses on helping students explore and prepare for the rigors of medical and health-related careers. Grades 9 and 10 students enroll primarily in high school coursework and may begin to dual enroll at the University of Michigan-Flint as early as grade 10.

The high school curriculum includes a focus on research and writing, math, science, and soft skill development. Students earn credit for high school courses after receiving a minimum 70% course average.

The high school schedule and calendar are closely aligned with the University’s schedule and calendar. Most high school courses are blocked as two or three-day-a-week courses, and the year is divided into fall, winter, and spring semesters. Students enroll in a Medical Career Foundations course in grade 12 in which they obtain several certifications (CPR, First Aid, OSHA, BBP, HIPAA, and OSHA), are trained in basic patient care, and experience a minimum of five two to three-week clinical rotations at Hurley Medical Center. In grade 13, students complete a 120-hour work-based learning experience with a facility closely aligned with their career pathways.

Dual enrollment courses are taken in conjunction with high school courses. Beginning in grade 11, students may dual enroll in up to 20 credits per year for a maximum of 60 transferable college credits before graduating high school. Genesee Early College students are not cohorted in dual-enrolled courses but enroll in college courses as would any first time in any college student (FTIAC).

RankSchool policy eliminated class valedictorian and salutatorian beginning with the Class of 2011. Class ranking is based on current cumulative grade point averages.

GPA CalculationGPA is computed using the above quality points. All high school courses are included on the high school transcript. Beginning in grade 9, all high school courses (except pass/fail courses) and dual-credited courses are included in the computation. A minimum of 25.5 credits (for the class of 2011) and 25 credits (for the class of 2012 and beyond) is required for graduation. The credits required for graduation include successful completion of a three-semester Medical Career Foundations course followed by a 120-hour work-based learning experience. In addition, students are required to earn 25 community service hours, successfully complete a yearly Educational Development Plan (EDP), a senior exit presentation and portfolio, and take all required school/state assessments.

Transcript data is recorded at the end of fall (December), winter (April), and spring (June) semesters. Dual enrollment courses are occasionally dual-credited to meet high school graduation requirements. All high school and dual-credited courses are listed on the student’s permanent transcript and are used to compute the semester and final grade point averages.
