Co-curricular activities (CCAs), previously known as Extracurricular Activities (ECA)are non-academic activities that all Singaporean students must participate in. This policy wasintroduced by the Ministry of Education, as a means to enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline and self-confidence.

Through CCAs, students in their early teens are often given actual public responsibilities.Red Cross and SJAB members, for example, are often required to render first aid at publicevents. Most uniformed groups require precision, management and organizational skills,

providing training to prepare students for the outside world.

In polytechnics and universities (tertiary education institutes), CCA records are considered bypotential employers.

There is a wide choice of CCAs in schools, for which students can sign up based on theirinterest and ability.

Schools typically classify CCAs under one of the following groups:

    Performing Arts

    Sports and Games

    Uniformed Groups

    Clubs and Societies

    Student Associations

Secondary schools typically divide CCAs into Core CCAs and Merit CCAs:

Core CCAs, which typically include the Sports, Performing Arts Groups andUniformed Groups, tend to take up more time and resources and have more emphasis

placed on them by the school. Membership in at least one Core CCA is compulsoryfor secondary school students in Singapore and it is considered an integral part of the

education system. Merit CCAs, which typically include the Clubs and Societies, are usually less time-

consuming. Academic clubs however may be consume as much time as, if not morethan, Core CCAs. Merit CCAs serve as an optional pursuit for students with aninterest in what the CCA has to offer.

[edit] Structure of the CCA ProgrammeCCA choices vary widely from school to school, although schools at each education level arerequired to conform to national standards prescribed for that level. For instance, all secondaryschools must compulsorily offer Band as a musical group. Secondary schools with anenrolment of less than 1000 must offer eitherNational Cadet CorpsorNational Police CadetCorps as a uniformed group, and those with an enrolment of more than 1000, both.

In primary schools, CCAs are often introduced to students at Primary Three. Not all primaryschools make CCA participation compulsory. In primary schools, Brownies are likened to

    junior Girl Guides.

In secondary schools, CCAs are treated more seriously. Students are required to pick at leastone Core CCA to join at Secondary One. Belonging to a Core CCA is compulsory, and thestudents may choose a second CCA if they wish. At the end of the fourth/fifth year, 1 to 2 'O'Levelpoints are removed from the examination aggregate (a lower aggregate indicates bettermarks). Although the marks are few, it is believed by many that they may make a differencewhen the students are considered for the most popular tertiary institutions. For example, one

minimum prerequisite for admission Raffles Institution at Year Five, via the 'O' Levels, is analready perfect score with the maximum of 4 points removed.

[edit] Structure of Typical CCAsCCAs are held outside of curriculum hours and the activities partaken depend on the natureof CCA. For example, Uniformed groups do foot drills and team-building exercises whilecompetitive sportsmen spend most of the time training and learning techniques from their

instructors.CCA groups typically feature an Executive Committee. In musical groups and CCAs cateringto specific interests, the Executive Committee typically consists of a Chairman, Secretary andTreasurer, among other positions.

TheNational Police Cadet Corps has started a few Open Units in the tertiary institutions, recruiting members to serve as student leaders in the secondary school units.

Many former students return to theiralma materafter graduation to help impart what theyhave learned to their juniors. Some do so within a formal framework, such as those in theuniformed groups (where ex-cadets are appointed as cadet officers), or the Voluntary AdultLeader scheme (for those above age 20). Others do so on a casual basis.

[edit] CompetitionsMany CCA-related competitions are held in Singapore, creating a competitive environmentwhich provide CCA groups an objective to work towards.

The Ministry of Education organizes competitions for competitive sports at the zonal andnational level, respectively the yearly Zonal and National Schools Competitions. MOE alsoorganizes the biennale Singapore Youth Festival for the Aesthetics CCAs.

Even more engaging is the CBC Experiencewhich offers a TV news workshop where students assume the functions of reporters, anchormen and technicians. Working as a team, they produce the equivalent of a Canadianevening news program. Along with the cultural enriching experiences described above, students may also participate in fun activities offered throughout Montreal such as a fast-

Pg Suhaimi admitted that hockey as a sport is still quite limited in the schools' sports scenedue to a lack of hockey fields and qualified coaches.

"We want to promote the sport (hockey) in Brunei, and we will, in future, suggest that more(hockey) fields be built in schools while developing programmes to train more coaches topromote the sport," said Pg Suhaimi.

"We are always looking to introduce new sports in schools, but we will observe the responseof students towards the sport before deciding whether or not to promote it," he said, addingthat they are also considering promoting cricket in schools.

According to the organisers, the key objective of the sports festival is to provide a healthyand vibrant environment for students to be nurtured both physically and mentally.

The event was also organised to give added incentive to schools' management and parents toencourage the students to actively participate in sporting events.

The event will hopefully increase collaboration, mutual understanding and foster unity amongthe officers of the department with the teachers of the schools and sports associations toimprove sporting standards in the country.

The sporting event is seen as a long-term project in discovering and nurturing athletes torepresent the country, and according to Pg Jusri, they will be looking to select athletes torepresent Brunei in the Asean School Games during the sports festival.

    TO Yogyakarta they go!

A total of 36 athletes and officials from Brunei flew off to the Indonesian city last night tocompete in the 5th Asean Primary School Sports Olympiad (APSSO) held from Oct 8-15.

Pg Jusri Pg Hj Hassim, the Senior Officer at the Sports and Games Unit at the Department ofCo-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education who is part of the contingent said that he ishoping to take advantage of the opportunity to properly bring up the young athletes.

26 athletes, 19 boys and seven girls ranging from ages 12 and below, along with 10 otherscomprising a team manager, officers, coaches and assistant coaches, will be competing in five

sports football, badminton, athletics, chess and table tennis.

"We try our hardest for them, preparing them at the grassroots of their time. We hope that thiswill provide them with the exposure needed for them to grow into the future national team,"Pg Jusri told The Brunei Times.

"These athletes may be the future of Brunei sports," he said.

The senior officer certainly has high expectations and hopes for the seeds of the nations, adding that most countries are exposing their young athletes to foreign competition at this ageas starting to do so when the youngsters are already in secondary schools would be too late.

It is at the ripe age of 12 and below that the proper fundamentals of sports should be drilledinto their systems, he said.

From there, progress on their skill levels can come swiftly towards bringing Brunei to thenext stages of its sporting level.

"So with this we hope to develop them properly and get them to be the best they can, for thefuture of our country," said Pg Jusri.

This year's edition of the competition will be most welcomed by the Sultanate's youthfootballers who were forced to sit out of last year's APPSO U-12 7-a-side competition due toFifa's ban.

    24/24

It was a most unfortunate incident as Pg Yusri had expressed full confidence in the squadthen.

"It is not impossible that these players will go on to represent the country one day. APSSO isjust an early step and I am full of confidence after the results in Bangkok where we beat

Indonesia 2-1 and Myanmar 2-0," he said last year.

The team had placed second in the Asean Youth Football Cup 2010, held in Bangkok,Thailand.

Their success prompted the introduction of the DST Group National Under-10 League andthe DST Group National Under 12 League which were hoped to help prepare the youthfootballers for anything coming their way.
