To the Editor:This November, we have the opportunity to

renew the Mental Health and Recovery Serviceslevy, which provides essential funding necessaryto continue providing much needed services formentally ill and substance addicted residents ofWarren and Clinton counties.

As an emergency medicine physician, I see firsthand the devastating effects of alcohol and drugabuse on the families in our community. In par-ticular, astronomical increases in death and dis-ability due to prescription drug abuse are occur-ring throughout Ohio. Mental Health andRecovery Services provides a vital safety net of

resources for the treatment, recovery and returnto productivity of affected individuals.

No less destructive are the ravages of mentalillness, which affects one out of five families in

our area. MHRS provides housing, therapeuticand counseling services, again with goal of inte-gration into society whenever possible.

As a member of the board of directors of MHRSfor Warren and Clinton counties, I have beenamazed at how the organization is able to wringthe most out every dollar we are entrusted with. The cost to the community and inevitable loss ofservices and programs that would result from afailure to pass this 1 mill renewal levy would beenormous. A yes vote forthe MHRS renewal levy iscritical to the continued availability of these vitalservices.

Received word from some faithful readers that Imissed an important Bob in last weeks column onthe top 10 Bobs of all time.

I failed to mention Bob the tomato from VeggieTales. I was snacking on a Milky Way and DietPepsi when writing the column and out in left fieldat the time.

Had I beengorging ona pizza in my officeId haveprobably thought of Bob the Tomato and Pete thePepperoni right away. Lets all just go ahead an add#11 Bob the tomato to our 2011 Bob list.

Sun will not publish letters to the

editor dealing with the Nov. 8 elec-tion after Thursday, Oct. 27.

To the Editor:Six years ago I read a magazine article in which

Marilyn vos Savant was asked Which do you thinkwould have a more positive effect on the world: acure for cancer or for mental illness? Sheanswered that readers may be taken aback tolearn that the human suffering and cost of mentalillne ss o utwe ig h e ve n the mis er y o f c an -cer.(and) the loss to society - including theimpact on families.is incalculable.

Mental Health Recovery Services of Warren andClinton Counties has a renewal levy on thisNovembers ballot. This will not increase yourtaxes but will ensure the continuance of servicesto adults and seniors as well as to troubled teensand children. In addition, other services such asviolence prevention programs, the funding of sup-port groups to help families cope with a lovedones mental disease, and a 24 hour crisis hotlinecan also be continued.

So, whether you are an early voter, an absenteevoter, or someone voting on November 8 in a vot-ing booth, please vote yes for the MHRS renew-al levy.
