Serving as the Voice of the Arts RegionallyAs we reflect on Fiscal Year 2017, it was one of transformational change for ArtsKC. After an extensive national search, our board selected Dana Knapp, formerly ArtsKC Director of Programs and Grants, to serve as President and CEO.

Two years of hard work and focus also paid off with the launch of ArtsKCGo.com, our new, one-stop arts and culture website for the greater KC region.

In addition to adding key staff and several new board members, we worked hard to help local nonprofit arts and cultural organizations drive audience engagement. For example, we hosted The Wallace Foundation at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center to

facilitate a discussion with local nonprofit arts leaders about how to build and grow audiences.

Our grantmaking program awarded 100+ grants to artists and nonprofit arts organizations and programs. And, we purchased the VoterVoice website platform to ramp up our efforts to keep constituents informed about arts legislation and funding.

Finally, 2017 saw ArtsKC bring together an amazing group of regional leaders to serve on our Advocacy Committee. My term as Board Chair ended July 1, and Kanon Cozad began his tenure as our new Board Chair to continue realizing our vision to promote, support and advocate for the arts across the five-county region we serve.

These are just a few examples of how we’re putting resources and programs in place to better support arts organizations and to continue to serve as the voice of the arts for the benefit of our region. We are excited about the future of ArtsKC.

Brad Douglas, FY17 ArtsKC Board Chair

Making the Arts Core to our IdentityWhen I became President and CEO of ArtsKC in January 2017, one of my first critical tasks was to listen to the arts and cultural organizations that we serve across a five-county region. What I continue to hear resoundingly is that they want ArtsKC to advocate for the arts at both the state and local level, so that organizations have the funding they need. They want us to serve as a connector to collectively advance their professional and organizational capacities. Each leader I met with wants ArtsKC to directly invest in their organization and programs.

I listened and am leading the ArtsKC staff strategically so that we can maximize our resources to promote, support and advocate for the arts. I believe that when the arts are

core to who we are as a community, our quality of life improves in every way: our economy prospers, and our creative industries grow.

In fact, according to a five-year study of the arts in our region by Americans for the Arts, the total economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture in the Kansas City Metro was $276 million in 2015. And, study results showed that the nonprofit arts and culture industry employed nearly 9,000 people, serving as a top employer regionally.

It’s an exciting time to be part of the arts in our city. Let’s keep the conversation going. In addition to an annual convening of arts leaders in the fall by ArtsKC, I’ll continue to be out in the community listening, and we’ll continue to support and invest in the organizations and individuals critical to our region’s remarkable arts and culture ecosystem. In the meantime, please email me at: [email protected] with your thoughts on how ArtsKC can continue to advance the arts regionally.

Dana Knapp, ArtsKC President & CEO

ArtsKC Encounter EventsArtsKC works with community partners to create Encounter events that introduce donors to new arts organizations, exclusive performance and exhibition experiences, and unique networking opportunities. Experiences may include a tour of an artist’s studio, a glimpse of a dress rehearsal, or the chance to meet the directors and choreographers who make Kansas City’s performances magical.

ArtsKCGo.comOn June 1, 2017, ArtsKC launched ArtsKCGo.com, your guide to arts and culture. The website features local arts and cultural events so visitors and residents can engage in our arts scene and nonprofit organizations can drive audience engagement. ArtsKC will add artist and arts education resources to the website in 2018.

The Wallace Foundation Convening In November 2016, ArtsKC hosted The Wallace Foundation at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center so they could share a decade of national audience engagement research with more than 200 of our region’s arts leaders. Topics of discussion included best practices in marketing, building new audiences and ways to be more effective with limited resources. This event was one of a series of convenings ArtsKC hosted in 2017 to connect area arts leaders.

Now Showing & ArtsKC Gallery Now Showing is an ArtsKC program that fosters partnerships between visual artists and businesses by providing opportunities for the artists to display their work in the conference rooms, lobbies and office spaces of local businesses. Artists are a paid a stipend by ArtsKC and receive 100% of the proceeds on sales. Our gallery gives ArtsKC grant recipients and Now Showing artists an opportunity to showcase their work in our exhibit space.

Leadership Series ArtsKC introduced the Arts Leadership Series in FY2016 to cultivate diversity and equity among arts boards, volunteers, staff and audiences. Topics of discussion in 2017 included best practices in marketing and building new audiences. ArtsKC developed the series in direct response to our community’s demand for greater leadership capacity within Kansas City’s arts and cultural sector. At the end of the series, 21 nonprofits met with 30 attendees at a board matchmaking event with a goal to place individuals on local organizations’ boards.

“The thing that I love most about the Now Showing program is that it gives people the opportunity to enjoy my art by living with it, rather than by the momentary glimpse offered by a gallery or festival setting.”

“We are here today to celebrate artists in every medium. Artists deserve acclaim because they show us the world in a way that is fresh, innovative and alive. How lucky we are to have a vibrant arts community here in Kansas City and an organization like ArtsKC that supports artists at every stage of their career.”

—Lewis Nerman

“The arts are many things, but make no mistake, they are foundational to the success of a community. They are the beating heart of a city and its people. They are an economic force. They are a cultural lynchpin. And they are the anchor for creativity and innovation.”

—Julia Irene Kauffman
