Fashion & Textiles Museum: Pattern Cutting Introduction • Date: 19 January 2013• Saturdays, 19 & 26

January 2013 / 11am–4pm• Led by Zandra Rhodes’

pattern maker Michelle Lewis, over two Saturdays participants will cover the basic rules of flat pattern cutting. The course focuses on using fashion blocks to create womenswear garment components including simple sleeves and skirts. This process will include bodice dart manipulations, style lines and how to add fullness through gathers and pleats.

• You will be taught to:• - use a block to design and

create a simple skirt, blouse or dress pattern

• - identify balance lines, take measurements from the body and make basic fitting adjustments

• - dart manipulation, pivoting and slashing to create style lines and design components such as pleating and gathers

• - work with seam allowances and sew a toile

• - pattern terminology and how to use specialist equipment.

• Demonstrations will use size 10 fashion blocks, but other standard sizes will be available to work with. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and to be inspired by the Hartnell to Amies exhibition.

• Level: No pattern cutting experience is necessary. This course is perfect for a beginner wanting to learn the principles as well as anyone who may have dressmaking experience but who now wants to experiment with their own patterns.

• Equipment: Calico and specialist equipment is provided. You will need to bring metric tape measure, fabric shears, paper shears, fine steel pins, fine pointed tracing wheel, pencils (hb), felt tip pen (or magic

Fashion & Textiles Museum: Draw like a Designer • Date: 20 February 2013• Wednesday / 2pm–3.30pm• This popular drawing workshop returns, led by

museum curator Dennis Nothdruft. Working with the exhibition, young designers will create their own illustrations using a variety of media. For ages 12-16.

UCAS Course Search

• Using the information that I received from our career’s advisor, Mrs Kay, I decided to do some searching of my own on the UCAS website

• So first I went on the UCAS website and clicked on the Course Search button.

• Then I went on the Course Search for Home and EU applicants for courses in 2013.

• I then, using the key word search, searched ‘fashion’.

• All courses that involved fashion came up, including fashion design, fashion retail to fashion imaging.

• I chose to look at ‘all fashion courses’

• On the university course listings, you could see the wide range of fashion courses they provide

• A couple of courses that caught my eye were from the University of Brighton and they were called Fashion with Business Studies and Textiles with Business Studies, as I couldn’t tell what the difference was.

Fashion with Business Studies• So I decided that I

would look further into the Fashion with Business Studies one as I saw that the Textiles with Business Studies was more to do with print, pattern, and fabric technology rather than design which is what I’m interested in.
