why do people attend events?
DESCRIPTION
This short preso shows a study about "Why do people participate in events?". We carried it out on the events we (Confected) supported and analysed the data accordingly. Along with the results we present solutions of how did we respond to these results as a company. Confected is happy that it can share this knowledge with you. We hope you will like it.TRANSCRIPT
Making good events great.
Why do peopleATTEND EVENTS ?
What do we define as an "event"?
In this presentation an "event" is any gathering of strangers, acquaintances or friends bigger
than 20 people.
Eg : conference, congress, meetup, corporate gathering,TEDx, Pecha-Kucha, BarCamp,etc.
What was our study sample?
We analysed data from events we supported.
Confected.com supported many events in diverse fields.
In this study, we picked events that represent wide range of age (students to professionals) and broad set of industries (finance to art).
Some events considered include TEDxWarsaw, Emerging Markets Forum and ESS.
What was our hypothesis?
People attend events for the talks.
We backed the hypothesis with the following arguments:
- Agenda is one of the first announcements event organizers do.- Conferences are ready to pay big sums to fly over certain speakers.- Speakers' fee is usually a significant part of event budget.- Presentations for high-profile events are carefully tweaked for weeks.
What did we find out?
We were wrong.
Well, partially.
By analyzing our data, it turned out that people care about only two things when they decide to attend an event:
- who are they going to meet there- one or two selected talks
1. Who are they going to meet
People care about other people.
Events and their talks are carrying one of the smallest amount of information per minute.
In general, people do not come to an event to get much smarter. There are books, there is internet, there are many more better ways to learn.
Instead, events are great to meet other people. Everyone is in the zone. Everyone is in the mood of meeting new folks. The room is full of like-minded people from your industry and that the best place to start a relationship. That is what people are looking for.
2. One or two selected talks
People need to be inspired.
Talk != TalkOne talk does not equal another talk.
There is no one who comes to an event to listen to all the talks. That just does not happen. If you are that person, send us an email.
Instead, people are looking for an inspiration, for a talk that would ignite their imagination and make them excited. They want to browse the list of speakers and find the one. The one they will bet on. The one they will research, prepare for and care about.
How do we respond to these results as a company?
In Confected, we built a networking application that helps to create relationships during events
and learn about specific speakers and talks.
The application is web-based and can be used with your mobile phone, laptop or iPad.
Anywhere. Anytime.
