Knowing Your Analytics Gives You a Competitive Edge

Congratulations on launching your Kickstarter project!

We’ve created this quick guide to help you with a very important step often skipped by Kickstarter campaigns – tracking your analytics.

When running a Kickstarter project, it’s important to track all activities you undertake to promote your project. These activities can include; running paid ads, posting to social media, or sharing links via email.

Google Analytics will help you know how many people are visiting your project and more about them. You also want to track how many people actually become backers, buyers, or subscribers. When any of these final step activities take place, they’re called “conversions” and they show that your hard work has paid off.

The most popular way that people track the results of Kickstarter projects and other online marketing campaigns, is with Google Analytics.

    What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free web-based tool offered by Google that provides you with analytical data on all activities that take place on your website or Kickstarter page. Data like; traffic sources, link clicks, purchases, form submissions, and amount of time spent on a particular page, can all be quickly accessed in the Google Analytics Admin Panel.

    Why Use Google Analytics?

Using a tool like Google Analytics allows you to see if the promotional activities you are conducting to drive people to your Kickstarter campaign are actually working. Without this data, you can only guess at the efficiency of your efforts. This can lead to a huge waste of money, or missed opportunities.

As an example – say you spent money on social media ads on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You get a good number of pre-sales, but which platform was responsible for most of the traffic at the lowest cost?

By using Google Analytics you will be able to see the answer to this type of question, which in turn can help you decide when and where to spend your valuable marketing budget.

Example of the type of metrics you will see once you set up Google Analytics.

  • Steps For Setting Up Google Analytics

Step 4 : Connect Google Analytics to Kickstarter

    • Click the left-hand menu and select “Dashboard”.

Refresh the page and the tracking id should be present. If it’s not there, ensure you’re logged into the account that created the project. If you have any trouble setting up Google Analytics or Kickstarter, send an email to our sales team and we’ll be able to assist you: [email protected].

Things to Track With Google Analytics

If everything was setup correctly, going to your Google Analytics dashboard should begin showing data for visitors engaging your Kickstarter page.

At the top of the top of the left side menu, click “Home” to see all available tracking items. Also, as you review your analytics data make certain you’ve selected the correct date range.

Below are some suggested fundamental statistics for you to start tracking.

Realtime This area of Google Analytics is useful to know who is currently visiting your Project. You’ll want to look at this to get an idea of how much traffic your page is getting in realtime. The overview tab will contain all the information that should be useful for you. If you’re not getting much traffic, then you will most likely need to find ways to drive more traffic to it. Either through advertising or other promotion.

Audience The audience tab helps you understand who is visiting your project page. There is a lot of information available, but we’ll look at a few key areas to know who’s visiting your project and who to market to. Listed below we have highlighted a few of the important audience tabs.

Demographics (Under “Audience”) The demographics tab will give you a good idea of what age range is visiting your page and what gender. You can use this information to better adjust any marketing efforts. For example, if you notice that mostly females are visiting your page, you may want to adjust your marketing efforts to only target females. Or you might want to narrow the age range you market to based on this information.

Interests (Under “Audience”)The interests tab lets you know what groups or categories the users visiting your page fall into. This can help you find and adjust interest targeting on Facebook based on the types of people that are visiting your page.

Geo (Under “Audience”) Using geo information, you can better narrow down which locations to advertise to and which languages. This helps ensure you have better marketing for the locations most likely to support your project.

Acquisition The acquisition tab allows you to see where your users are coming from. Diving in deeper can start to get fairly technical, but looking at the overview tab can let you know where most traffic is coming from.

All Traffic ( Under “Acquisition”) Clicking into these deeper levels can give you an idea of where your traffic is coming from. The referrals page will be the easiest to view high levels of which websites are sending traffic to your Kickstarter page.

Behavior We’ll ignore the behavior tab as this is more advanced and won’t apply to your Kickstarter project much.

Conversions The conversions tab, specifically under Ecommerce helps you see the flow of transactions for your Kickstarter project and which products are converting the best. The overview tab will give you some good general information.
