Fungi

• Saprotrophic– Decomposers– Extra cellular digestion

• Mycelium: fungal body– Composed of many hyphae (individual chains of

cells)

Black Bread Mold (Zygomycota)• Asexual and sexual reproduction

Look at zygospores (diploid reproductive structures) with prepared slides under microscope

Page 3: Fungi lab tz(1)

Sac fungi (Ascomycota)• Many cause disease– Example: yeast infection

• Observe yeast demo– Single celled– Asexual reproduction through budding

• Aspergillus slide• Penicillium slide• Look for conidiospores: asexual spores– Form on stalks called conidiophores– Individual spores are conidia

Ascomycota life cycle

Page 5: Fungi lab tz(1)

Club fungi (Basidomycota)• Cap: basidocarp– Forms basidospores at the end

of basidia (stalks)• Typically reproduces sexually

Look at examples and slides but do not dissect

Lichens

• Symbiotic relationship between fungi and protista (algae)• Three different shapes:– Foliose: leaf-like – Fruticose: shrubby appearance– Crustose: flattened

• View thallus slide– Find both fungaland algae cells
