Riverbend Live Information

Annual Riverbend Live! Concert Series Returns July 4th for Exciting 5-Week Season

The lineup features spectacular variety of musical guests and programs each Friday July 4th through August 1st.

Riverbend Live! has become an annual tradition for the Winston area. Fami-lies, couples and groups (no pets please), bring your lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets or just an appetite for great entertainment. The free Friday night concerts start at 7:00 p.m. and last approximately 2 hours. A variety of vendors are always available for evening meals or snacks. Concerts are held at the outdoor theater at Riverbend Park in Winston Oregon. See our website www.riverbendlive.org or call 541-430-1496 for more details.

2014 Riverbend Live Concert Schedule July 4—Full of fire, Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials will get the series started by hitting the floor running and accelerating from there. From working at Chicago’s Red Carpet Car Wash to appearing on national television, from gigging at the smallest ghetto blues bars to per-forming on the biggest international concert stages, master bluesman Ed Williams has come a long way. Mixing smoking slide guitar boogies and raw-boned Chicago shuffles with the deep-est slow-burners, Lil’ Ed and his blistering Blues Imperials deliver the blues, from gloriously riotous and rollicking to intensely emotional and moving. Currently celebrating 24 rip-roaring years together, they ply their musical talents with skills that have been honed to a razor’s edge. www.intrepidartists.com/artists/lil-ed-and-the-blues-imperials/

Snapshots Along the Umpqua by Eric Wilson The following is a continuation of excerpts from chapter six entitled

“HISTORICAL TIDBITS”

May 1883: The first train stopped at the station in Dillard on Sunday, May 17, 1883, at 10:45 AM. It was an historic occasion for the community. A large crowd of people was there to welcome the historic moment. However, regular train service between San Francisco and Portland didn’t begin until 1897

June 1884: The community of Dillard received postal services on June 16, 1884, with James Dillard being the first postmaster. The post office is located on Highway 99 in Dillard.

September 1942: Thomas Parkinson of Winston Section Road taught at Dillard Ele-mentary School from 1920 to between 1942 and 1952, representing the Fourth Con-gressional District. Thomas Parkinson passed away on April 26, 1987 at the age of 90.

October 1962: The Columbus Day Storm has been documented as one of the ten top natural disasters to hit Douglas County. On October 12, 1962, a section of a typhoon in the Pacific Ocean broke away from its main body and headed eastward to the mainland. The storm did considerable damage to the coastal towns from Crescent City to Reedsport and farther north. It also affected many areas in the South Umpqua Valley

January 1963: Green Sanitary Sewer System went into operation on January 28, 1963, after eight years of persevering amidst strong opposition

October 1964: The dedication of the new City Hall in Winston took place in the pres-ence of an enthusiastic crowd of 75 people on October 31, 1964. The guest speaker for the occasion was Congressman Robert Duncan.

Copies of the book SNAPSHOTS ALONG the UMPQUA can be purchased at: Amazon, DOUGLAS COUNTY MUSEUM, Wintergreen Nursery in Dillard, Treat’s Café in Porter Creek Lookingglass Store in Lookingglass, While Away Books in Roseburg and V.W. Books at Garden Valley Mall in Roseburg.

July 18 – Blessed with smoky, seductive pipes that bend the blues into pure enchantment, Janiva Magness is a charismatic performer known for her electrifying live shows. A master of the low-down blues who is equally at ease surrounded by funk or sound, Magness invigorates every song with a brutal honesty. Growing up with many challenges, Janiva watched live shows and listened to recordings of blues artists, sparking a new life direction and purpose. www.janivamagness.com

July 25-26 – Riverbend Youth Theater Production of Annie Jr. Leapin' Lizards! The popular comic strip heroine Little Orphan Annie takes center stage in ANNIE JR., an adaptation of one of the world's best-loved and most-performed musicals. With pluck and positivity, Annie charms everyone she meets de-spite a next-to-nothing start in the Depression-era New York City of the 1930s. She is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. When billionaire Oliver War-bucks decides to invite an orphan to his mansion for Christmas, Annie gets her chance to experience NYC anew outside the confines of the orphanage. Despite Miss Hanni-gan's evil machinations, Annie befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new home alongside Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

August 1 – Following the evening opener, Carolyn Dufurrena, Red Steagall and The Boys In The Bunkhouse, round out this year's exciting schedule. Although Red Steagall is best known for his wonderful Texas Swing dance music, he is beloved by the Texas cowboys for the times spent with him around the chuck wagon campfires. All this from a person who began with a degree from West Texas State in Animal Sci-ence and Agronomy. go to www.redsteagall.com.

July 11 - The Carolina Chocolate Drops is an appealing grab-bag of antique country, blues, jug band hits and gospel hollers -- the most electrifying acoustic act around. All of the musicians sing and trade instruments including banjo, fiddle, harmonica, snare drum, bones, jug and kazoo. Much of their repertoire is based on the traditional music of the Piedmont region of the Carolinas from the eminent African American old-time fiddler Joe Thompson. www.chocolatedrops.com

The other person and the three aliens went after Harry and me. We ran as fast as we could, but we couldn’t find a

hiding spot. We finally found a spot and went to crouch down. But right before we go to our spot, the thing caught us

by our t-shirts.

“Where are the others?” it said.

“We will never tell you!” I shouted.

“Tell us or we will kill you!”

“I will do anything to protect my family!” I said, then spit at the alien like creature.

Suddenly The thing shot at Harry. The bullet hits him right in the head and he drops dead to the wooden floor.

“NNNNOOOO!!!!!!” I yell

“Now tell me where the others are!” the leader said.

“NO!”

“You!” the leader points at three people in the group.

“Go find where they’re hiding!” the leader yells orders.

The small group spread out in different directions. One went straight to the library where my family was hiding.

Would they find them? What would they do to them? Why are they doing this? Why would they want my family? What can I do to prevent my family from dying? How?

“Boss, I found something!” one of the guys yelled to the leader.

My heart started to pound, hoping that he didn’t find the panel to put in the code. The leader went past me and

gave me a wicked glare as he went straight for the library.

“Oh no! Did he find where they are hiding?” I whispered to myself.

“What is that?” the leader said pointing at a grey box on the wall.

The leader flipped up the cover of the grey box and revealed a number panel.

“He found it! No! They can’t kill my family!” I whispered to myself.

“What is the code?” the leader yelled.

“I won’t tell you!”

“Bang!”

Dad

Harry and I crept through the creaky hallway. A gun shot went off.

“BANG!!”

A crashing sound followed after. Harry and I stopped at the sound of it.

What do you think that was?” Harry whispered.

I crawled down the hall way to make look. I was shocked at the scene. A dead body was on the ground. I crawled

back to Harry.

“They killed someone,” I told him.

“Who was it?”

“I don’t know. Looked like one of those alien things,” I exclaimed.

“Well, isn’t that a good thing,” Harry said.

“Maybe.”

Everything was quiet and the lights flickered.

“How many are there in the group?” Harry asked.

“About 10.”

“Do you think we can take them?”

“Maybe, but I don’t think we should try,” I said.

All of a sudden Harry gets up and starts firing his machine gun at the group. The leader of the group was

shocked. Harry shot down 5 of the people in the group, counting 2 of the alien things and 3 people.

“Get them!” the leader said.
