With Sympathy 16The Southern Cross 16

From the PrincipalDear members of the Sacred Heart College community

‘To Christians, the future does have a name, and its name is Hope’. Pope Francis

The Class of 2018 concludes formal classes this week with our traditional Graduation and Thanksgiving Mass and Graduation Assembly marking this significant week in the lives of our Year 12 students and their families.

Each year Marist Schools across the nation focus on a particular theme. This year’s theme, as displayed above and at each campus, is particularly appropriate at this time of year. As our students conclude their formal schooling, head into exams and final assessments and thence to the world beyond we want them to do so with a sense of HOPE!

In taking up our 2018 theme of believing in hope and a future for all people, we as Marists are people who, through our word and action, offer the world a new way of seeing and being. A world where every young person can enjoy the hope of a future beyond the horizon which they are yet to discover. The Good News is that our Marist communities, such as Sacred Heart, are full of single individuals that together create an ‘us’ - the ‘Hearts Family’! Indeed, hope does have a future, especially at Sacred Heart!

We wish our graduating class every blessing and success as they enter the final phase of their formal schooling and look forward to acknowledging each of them at the Graduation Celebration at the end of November.

Marist Immersion Trivia & Auction Night

Marcellin CampusNext year, Sacred Heart College begins the next chapter in its rich history. The amalgamation with Marymount College formally translates into the opening of the Champagnat Campus for girls and boys in Years 7 to 9. In keeping with the commencement of this new and revitalised moment, the Somerton Park Campus will now be known as Marcellin Campus from 2019.

The synergy of having each campus named after the founder of the Marist Brothers, acknowledges the foundations of our ethos and also ties in with earlier historic developments. Sacred Heart College (established 1897) relocated to Paringa Hall in 1914 and is thus the initial College campus and was such up until 1976. St Joseph’s College, Mitchell Park was established in 1967 and became ‘Sacred Heart Junior School’ in 1977 as part of the Catholic Education restructure of the region, later to become ‘Sacred Heart College Middle School’.

Marymount was also restructured into a Years 6-9 girls school at this time having been established at Seacombe Gardens in 1956. We are hosting a celebration this Friday evening at Hove for Old Scholars and Past Staff Members as part of the transition to Champagnat and all Old Scholars and former staff are most welcome!

It would be fair to state that well established and successful organisations are agile organisations. They are innovative and flexible, true to their core values and continue to serve the needs for which they were established. One Hundred and twenty one years later Sacred Heart continues to be agile!

Best wishes,

Steve ByrnePrincipal

International Day of the Girl BreakfastStudent Leaders from the Marymount and Senior School Campuses attended the 7th Annual International Day of the Girl Breakfast on Thursday 18 October at the Adelaide Oval. The aim of the event was to raise awareness about issues that girls and women around the world face in relation to accessing education, health, freedom and protection. Guest speakers included Melinda Tankard-Reist, Australian author and advocate for women and girls.

Year 10 House Leader Hana Park provided the following summary of her experience at the breakfast:

“The International Girls Day Breakfast was an eye opening experience and had a lot of inspiring speakers that spoke well about women’s rights and the roles that we play within them. Speakers talked about the roles toxic masculinity plays in women’s rights as well as how sexism is displayed in both developing and developed countries. All the school students then attended a panel where we had the opportunity to ask questions to people that work within women’s rights. The whole morning was inspiring and gave me lots of resources and hope going into the future.”

From the Head of Champagnat CampusYear 9 Social Last Friday evening, the Polding Centre was transformed with the theme of A Night Under the Stars as our Year 9s celebrated together at the Social. It was a wonderful evening, as students enjoyed the richness and simplicity of friendship and dressing-up. With a mixture of nerves and excitement, students embraced the formal dances and opportunity to mix with their peers in a social setting. I congratulate the Year 9 Team from both Marymount and the Middle School on a wonderful evening.

Year 9 CampOver the next two weeks, Year 9 students will venture into the wilderness for their outdoor adventure camp. They will travel in Rite Journey groups and participate in a range of challenging activities that place them out of their comfort zone. I know for some students, going on camp is challenging and confronting, but to the credit of the Year 9 group, individuals are being supported and encouraged by their peers. The Rite Journey Program and outdoor experience continues to be a highlight for our Year 9 students.

Champagnat Music LaunchOn Tuesday evening students, families and teachers gathered for the Champagnat Music Launch. The evening, hosted by Mike Ellul, highlighted how the music instrumental program will be shaped at Champagnat Campus. It also provided students with an opportunity to meet music teachers, sign up for ensembles, instrumental lessons and ask questions in an intimate setting. It was a wonderful evening, highlighting the vast opportunities at Champagnat, whilst also providing an opportunity to celebrate the many talented students in our community.

PAT TestingIn the coming weeks, Year 6-9 students will sit the progressive achievement tests in both literacy (reading comprehension) and numeracy. The data collected from the PAT tests will provide teachers with diagnostic information about your child’s learning. It will enable teachers to track individual student progress and most importantly ensure that all students are moving forward. Following the completion of these tests, staff will unpack the data, in particular, year level trends and alter their programming so that areas requiring improvement are being targeted. Further to this, the data collected will also be used during our end of year handover process, ensuring that your child’s 2019 teachers are well informed about their literacy and numeracy skills. Whilst the information collected will primarily be used for teaching staff in their programming and planning, individual student information is also available for parents. If you would like a copy of this overview, please contact our Director of Teaching and Learning, Kate Bawden.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Sports DayLast Thursday, the Middle School community celebrated their annual Sports Day. After a drizzly start to the day which saw some events being modified, the skies cleared to allow perfect conditions for the boys to demonstrate their athletic prowess.

Popular events on the day included the 100m and 200m sprints, Tug of War and the various jumping and throwing events. In addition to this, we were entertained by the running finals of the Age Champion competition, performances from the Drum Corps and Vicious Pandas, and the Staff-student 4x100m relay, taken out by Montagne house.

Congratulations to Marian, the winning house on the day and to the four Age Champions: Henry McKinnon (Junior), Ethan McAneney (Under 13), Tinashe Chihota (Under 14) and Brandon Smith (Senior).

This day would not have been possible without the efforts of the teachers and support staff from the Middle School. Particular thanks to Mike Ellul, who not only acted as MC for the day, but who also coordinated the music and audio. Thanks also to Terry Rice and Neil Williams for their outstanding work in preparing the grounds for the day and to Terry McAuliffe for again helping with his commentary of the running events. Well done to all students and parents whose attendance and participation allowed this to be another successful day!

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of Senior SchoolToday marks the final day of lessons for our Year 12 students.

Year 12 Graduation MassLast night our Year 12 students attended a wonderful Mass to mark the end of their schooling at Sacred Heart College. The mass was con-celebrated by Fr Peter Sheedy and Fr Michael Kyumu, who invested a great deal of time in meeting with our Year 12 leaders prior to the Mass, to gauge how they were feeling about embarking on the next stage of their lives. The theme for our mass was facing the future with audacity and hope. As graduants of a Marist school, we are confident the class of 2018 will be ‘Game Changers’!

Year 12 Graduation AssemblyThe primary reason for today’s Graduation Assembly was the presentation of Academic Awards in all SACE Stage 2 subjects, as well as many specific College Awards. There was also an official handover of Student Leadership to the Year 12 Student Leaders-elect for 2019 by the current leaders, as well as a final address from our College Captains, Joshua Lloyd and Maggie McKay. Congratulations to the following students:

Students collected their Year 12 t-shirts as well as their Year 12 photographs. They were very pleased to have more photographs taken and to celebrate in a safe and happy environment.

Year 12 Boarder’s DinnerMany thanks to the Year 12 Boarding students and their families for gathering together tonight at Morphettville Function Centre for their special farewell event. It is always a privilege to attend this dinner and to congratulate our students who have completed their secondary schooling (almost) and have had to live away from home in the process.

I wish all Year 12 students and their families all the best over the coming weeks and in particular, for those students preparing for external examinations.

Important information: Examinations and SACE ResultsEnd of Year SACE ResultsSACE results are expected to be available through Students Online on Tuesday 18 December. Results are usually accessible from 8.30am. Year 10 students will be able to check Personal Learning Plan (PLP) results, Year 11 students can check all of their results for the year (including their results for Stage 2 Religion Studies) and Year 12s will be able to check not only their results, but their SACE achievement and ATAR (if eligible). Official documentation for students studying Stage 2 subjects (eg Record of Achievement and SACE if achieved) will arrive in accordance with local, national and international postal delivery schedules.

For more information about SACEresults, visit the My results section on the SACE website.

Year 11 and Year 12 students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address.

Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log in. If they have never logged in before (unlikely I would hope) the PIN is the first 4 digits of the student’s birthday eg 3rd January would have PIN 0301. The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from that page if necessary.

Stage 2 results will be sent to the address recorded on Students Online in December. Please email Deborah Hearl [email protected] by Friday 30 November at the latest, with the correct address if it is wrong.

Year 12 students applying for courses through SATAC should ensure that their postal address and email is correct when they log on to SATAC - this is SEPARATE to SACE - else they won’t receive course offers. The contact email address should NOT be the student’s school email as this account will be inactive after Monday 31 December. STUDENTS are responsible for checking this information and changing if necessary https://apply.satac.edu.au/lgnrg/x?loginCycle=unis2019.

Year 12 students - will you get SACE this year? For most Year 12 students, the remaining boxes to tick to get SACE this year are:

• pass the equivalent of 3 full Year, Stage 2 subjects• pass Research Project (most students have already received their result for this at the end of July)• get 200 SACE credits

Students expecting to complete a Certificate III this year that can count towards the ATAR (if eligible), must ensure I receive the required documentation by Friday 30 November at the very latest.

Stage 2 Written Exams - IMPORTANT INFORMATIONSPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR YEAR 12 EXAMSStudents who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:

• should contact me ASAP by email at [email protected]• ensure you have spoken to me BEFORE the exam commences• the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell• students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their derived result (moderated predicted exam

mark) by seeing me at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks.

Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell, still do better than their moderated predicted mark!

Year 12 SACE Board written examinations are scheduled to start at Sacred Heart on Monday 5 November. Students have already received an exam attendance slip and exam timetable with dates, times and locations in addition to rules relating to sitting the exam. Students must familiarise themselves with these rules and ensure that they know exactly what equipment they are/are not permitted to take into the exam room. Students should also familiarise themselves with the instructions on the front cover of each of their exams (distributed by class teachers and also accessible at the SACE Board website).

I would particularly like to point out that students are not permitted to have a mobile phone or smart watch in their possession and hence these items should not be brought into the examination room.

Ideally exam attendance slips should be brought to each exam. I don’t have extra copies so can not do anything to assist if it has been lost or forgotten. It will not be the end of the world if a student forgets to bring it. It is a bit like a driver’s licence - unlikely that I need to check it unless there is a problem! Students should bring another form of ID if the attendance slip can not be located.

Pencilcases, calculator covers (if a calculator is permitted) and other paper (unless approved notes for Mathematics exams) are also not to be brought into the exam room.

If students are permitted to bring a calculator for one or more of their exams, it must be on the list of approved calculators. Likewise, any dictionaries need to be approved and have no thesaurus entries. The links below will take you to the lists of approved calculators and dictionaries:

Students should aim to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before the scheduled start time as there are a number of administrative tasks to do before the exam starts. Please be aware there is a seating arrangement.

NOTE THAT STAGE 2 EXAMS CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED.

Most exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, but not ALL - so very important to check the exam timetable carefully.

Year 10 and 11 Exams - End of Semester 2Year 10 and 11 students have also been emailed their Semester 2 exam timetable and rules relating to exams. Please note that Year 10 and 11 ENGLISH students will be doing their exam on their Chromebook/laptop device. It is essential that Year 10 and 11 English students bring their fully charged Chromebook/device to their English exam.

It is not appropriate for families to book holidays during this important assessment period. In keeping with SACE Board policy “matters of the student’s own choosing eg family holidays” are not acceptable grounds for special provisions (such as rescheduling). The consequence for students missing exams due to holidays is therefore unfortunately zero.

2019 Year 12Year 11 students will have their first week of 2019 Year 12 lessons in the week following Year 11 exams. Students and parents of Year 11 students will receive details about the week very soon (Nov 26 - 29).

I wish all students the best of luck with their revision programs in the lead up to final exams.
