I RESCUEDMY BESTFRIEND!

Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Summer Camp atNaperville Area Humane Society

Available to children ages 6 to 12 years, Naperville Area Humane

Society's Animals & Us Day Camps teach children about animals

while having fun. Subjects range from basic pet care and humane

education to animal control, wildlife and potential careers in the

animal welfare field. Kids enjoy games, crafts and activities covering a

variety of topics. Each camp also gives children the chance to interact

with animals at the shelter. Camp is one week long and is offered

during the summer.

The registration fee for each session is $125, which includes materials for crafts, a camp t-shirt

and a daily snack. There is a $25 cancellation fee. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the

summer camp program, we must limit registration to one week per child. Please visit

www.NapervilleAreaHumaneSociety.org for dates and details. Registrations will be accepted at the

shelter at 1620 W. Diehl Road in Naperville or online starting on Monday, March 17 at 9:00 a.m.

Hi, I'm Mistletoe...And yes, I know my name is a bit "Christmasy". I'm not attachedto that name however. In fact, I wish I could tell people my realname. Some very kind people named me right after I was foundabandoned an empty house with two other cats and five dogsright before the holidays. I can be a bit shy at first, but when Imake friends with you, I can't get enough love and attention. Iam only five years old and can live with cats, dogs, and kids. Please adopt me and you can give me any name you like!

We have many cats just like Mistletoe waiting for theirforever homes. From March 1-16, we will highlight thesefabulous felines with our March Madness promotion. Theiradoption fee will be reduced to only $5. This includes spayor neuter surgery, vet exam, vaccinations, microchip, collarand carrier. Please see NapervilleAreaHumaneSociety.orgfor photos and descriptions of available animals.

the happy gardenermake a difference with a garden

Article Source: Heather PrinceThe Growing Place

What a Winter!Cold and snow is beneficial inthe garden. The cold may killsome of our insect pests and thesnow insulates our perennials.Snow also will provide muchneeded moisture first thing inthe spring. Our gardens shouldbe looking good this year!

However, our heavy snowfallhas allowed our rabbit friendsmore access to trees and shrubs. We have noticed rabbit damagehigh above the ground level, thanks to snow drifts and piles.Check your trees and shrubs, especially crabapples, fruittrees, burning bush, shrubroses, witchhazel andviburnum. Rabbit damage lookslike sharp, neat, almost 45degree angle cuts, almost as ifpruners had been used. Theymay also nibble away atexposed bark.

The most effective way to keeprabbits from eating is to fencethem out. Trees and shrubs canbe protected with a ring ofquarter inch wire hardwarecloth or chicken wire. You cantuck it into remaining snow.

Monitor it as snow melts so thatthe fencing doesn’t form gapsor collapse. You may have toreset it more than once as weedge into spring. You may alsouse bird netting to cover aparticular specimen plant. Justmake sure to tie it around thebase so no gaps are evident.

Once the weather warmsenough to be outdoors, now isthe perfect time to prunewoody plants if they bloom insummer. Wait to prune yourfragrant viburnums, lilacs, andanything that blooms beforeMemorial Day until just afterthey flower. Remember, pruneonly if necessary to control thesize of the plant or toremove dead, crossingor damaged twigs.Opening up the canopy of atree or the structure ofshrubs will allow greaterair circulation and reducefungal disease. Pruningnow before leavesappear allows you toclearly see the structure of theplant. Try to enhance thenatural shape of the plant whenpruning and remember to makecuts just above a branching

point or bud. This allows theplant to heal properly and sealthe wound. Don’t wait toomuch longer than March 20thto prune oaks, elms or maples.Oaks and elms should only bepruned while insects are stilldormant to prevent the spreadof Dutch Elm Disease and oakwilt. Maples often will bleedsap if they are pruned too latein the season.

Join us at The Growing Placeon March 29 and 30 at 2:00 p.m.in Aurora for our free Hands onPruning class! We’ll

demonstratetechniques

then letyou trythem out.

Dine Around NapervilleWalker’s Charhouse • Gartner Road • Naperville, IL 60540RSVP 630-637-9688Hours: Weekdays 11am-9pm | Fri & Sat 11am-10pmSunday 11am-9pm

Longtime Naperville Resident, Ray Kinney serves as host of a local cable segment, Dine Around Napervillepromoting entertainment and dining options in Naperville. A small business owner, family man, and self‑proclaimed Foodie, Ray spends quite a bit of time dining out in his favorite place to be – Naperville, Illinois. In this column, Ray will share his insights and opinions on the local dining scene. For a complete listing of Naperville restaurants, check out www.dinenaperville.com

Being a long timeNapervillian, I have seenmany changes in the years I

have called Naperville home, some ofthem good and some of them not sogood. If you live here long enoughyou find some neighborhood gems, where in fact everyone does knowyour name… in my part of town, oneof those places is Walker’s Charhouselocated in Naperville Plaza. Locatedin what used to be a Pizza Hut when Iwas in high school, this is one of thosewelcome changes I mentioned. This isalso one of my most frequentedshopping malls with Casey’s,Oswald’s, Peterson’s Wine Cellar andFirst Community Bank, you can prettymuch get it all at Naperville Plaza.

Walker’s has been around forquite a while, but recently changedhands when a former server, BryanWerschulz, took the leap intorestaurant ownership. The restauranthas been operating since 1994 and hasa great welcoming feel from theminute you walk in – we recentlydined there on a chilly Monday

evening, but the place had a nicecrowd of seemingly regulars that neweach other and the staff quite wellbased on the banter we enjoyed.

The dinner menu is not toocumbersome and they stick true towhat you expect at a Charhouse –steaks and chops! All of their steaksare 100% Black Angus and handtrimmed in house! I ordered acocktail from the bar and Paula had anice glass of Chardonnay as welooked over the menu and thespecials. Service is quick and friendlyand our server recommended one oftheir new specials, Pasta a la Walker’sand I gladly obliged. Paula opted forthe small filet and baked potato andwe each ordered a salad. The saladswere excellent as was the warm freshmade bread, something I can’t resist. As our main entrees arrived wechatted with the server about therecent changes and he seemedgenuinely excited – even mentioningthe special I had ordered has been abig hit. I agree – the perfectly cookedpappardelle noodles were covered

with a tenderloin mushroom ragu, alltopped with an herb infused Ricottacheese that perfectly blended all of theingredients together in one wonderfulplate of perfect comfort food. Thefilet was cooked to perfection for mywife as evidenced by the fact shedidn’t offer me any and there wasn’tany left as she cleaned her plate! Avery excellent dining experience forsure and the menu has something foreveryone including an almondcrusted whitefish and bacon wrappedpork tenderloins that had myattention until I read the specials….somany choices, so little time!

Always a good sign when you seefamilies enjoying a meal out togethernext to an elderly couple who eat atthe place daily! The kid menu is verynice and we always see families thereenjoying a meal together. Open forlunch and dinner this is one of thoseplaces that you bring your kids to andthey will be coming back for years.
