Happy 2013 from the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Iota Phi Lambda
Sorority, Inc..” In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched
out in friendship, but never in want. “ EO has been hard at work for the
last year preparing to host the first regional conference in Arlington,
Texas. We are excited to welcome everyone to our city. Whether it’s
your first time or you have visited before we look forward to showing
you an awesome time and an Arlington you have never seen.
Kudos to our membership chair Adrienne Hunter for rounding up quality sorors. EO
recently inducted two new additions to the Iota Family; Alfreda Davis and Latasha
Goodwin.
The month of February is often associated with cold, dreary, and rainy weather. Although
the shortest month of the calendar year, February can feel as if it drags on forever as we
anticipate the arrival of Spring. There are plenty of things to celebrate in the month of
February. Most people are familiar with celebrating Valentine's Day, but what else is
there to celebrate in the month of February? February is of course Black History Month
and American Heart Month. Other dates to remember in February are National Freedom
Day is celebrated on February 1st. This historical celebration began on February 1, 1949
after Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the holiday in June of 1948. National
Freedom Day serves to remind Americans of what our country stands for and to celebrate
the freedoms we enjoy as U.S. citizens.
We have a very busy year coming up with our upcoming Black History Month event, EO
Family Day and of course all the events we will hold in April in honor of Iota’s capstone
program, Business Month. You can stay updated on all of EO’s current events by visiting
our website www.iota-eo.org, liking our Facebook page or following @XtraOrdinaryEO

Jump-Start Your Career Change By Ian Christie, Monster Contributing Writer
State Your Case Effectively: Be sure you have strong, valid reasons to change careers. If you know why you
want to make the change and what you stand to gain from it, you'll increase your odds of success considerably.
Also, be sure you can articulate those reasons to potential employers and explain what's in it for them.
Employers don't want to feel like you're running away from something.
Find the Logical Entry Point: Often, a certain role or company will serve as a natural transition into your new
field. Bolster your chances of getting hired by using your leverage points to identify where you best fit.
Avoid Overanalysis: Developing a strong understanding of yourself is imperative to managing your career
change, but avoid analysis paralysis. You cannot think your way to a career change; eventually, you must act.
Connect with People in Your Target Field: When you're changing careers, your resume is less useful as a
marketing tool. For that reason, building your network becomes even more critical. Connect with people in your
target field to validate your interest and learn about opportunities.
Make an Impression: On interviews, be the standout candidate by talking up the actions you've taken that
prove your commitment to the field. Reveal your industry knowledge, and mention industry events you've
attended or industry associations where you volunteer. If you write an industry-related blog, reference that as
well. You could even present a white paper on an industry issue you've researched or a business plan that
demonstrates the value you could bring to the organization.
Your goal is to make potential employers see you as someone already in their industry and in it to stay,
regardless of whether they hire you. Don't leave the impression that if they don't hire you, you will do
something else.
Moonlight: One tangible way to start your career change is through freelance or part-time jobs. Such work
builds your resume and lets you test the waters in your new field.
Concrete steps such as these create momentum for your career change, demonstrate your commitment to
potential employers and validate your plan.

"Sisterhood's a beautiful thing"
February celebrates many great initiatives and holidays; Black History Month, American Heart Month, Interna-
tional Friendship Month, and Saint Valentine’s Day. Throughout the month of February reflect on what sisterhood
is, how you show your sisterhood to your Sorors, and if your actions demonstrate what a glorious sisterhood there
is to be found in Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH
Heart disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United
States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. The good news? Heart disease can
often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.
Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for
people to make healthier choices. Make a difference in your community: Spread the word
about strategies for preventing heart disease and encourage people to live heart healthy lives.
How can American Heart Month make a difference?
We can use this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can help prevent it — both at
home and in the community. Here are just a few ideas:
• Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt.
• Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day to help students start
good habits early.
• Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by speaking out about ways to prevent heart dis-
ease.
How can I help spread the word?
We’ve made it easier for you to make a difference. This toolkit is full of ideas to help you take action today.
For example:
• Add information about living a heart healthy lifestyle to your newsletter.
• Tweet about American Heart Month.
• Host a community event where families can be active while learning about local health resources.
• Take action: Be the cure (http://yourethecure.org/aha/advocacy/default.aspx) !
Join the American Heart Association’s national movement in support of healthier communities and healthier
lives.
