I was extremely proud of the manner in which the children presented and conducted themselves throughout the entire evening. They have all grown and matured so very fast and have demonstrated excellent leadership and teamwork throughout the year. As the first Kindy group to have attended our new school back in 2011, it is so rewarding to see these children grow and learn over the years. This year, past Wattle Grove graduate from 2012 – Sophia Sunthang - also joined our Ceremony as a special guest and provided our graduates with some very thoughtful and wise messages of her years at high school and now university. It was such a pleasure to have such a very accomplished student return to her primary school as part of the Graduation Ceremony. The Year 6s, looking absolutely resplendent, presented their reflections of their primary school years and their aspirations for the future. We will have many wonderful memories of our 2018 Graduating Classes and the manner in which they have worked together and have been such great student leaders. Graduation Dance was conducted by Humphreys Dance School for all the Year 6 children. Once again, this was an outstanding event and the children demonstrated their dance skills extremely well. Parents joined their children on the dance floor for the final dances when they returned after 9.15pm. This was another example of families and staff having a lot of fun together. Many thanks to the Year 6 parents who provided a beautiful supper for all the children and to all the staff and parents who helped with the clean up after the event. Your efforts are so greatly appreciated. As I will be taking long service leave in the last week of term, I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to our School Community. You have been once again amazing in your support of our school and it is through this support and the dedication of our staff that we continue to provide quality learning opportunities for the children in a wonderful school environment. Special thanks to the School Board and the P&C for the tremendous support you have provided throughout 2018. Strong and supportive parent and community leadership is a big part of ensuring the ongoing success of our school and we certainly value that. To the many parent volunteers who assisted us throughout the year, I once again extend my sincere thanks for always being there to assist. You make a significant difference to our school and to the education of the children. Next year, we can all look forward to another year of great achievements. Whilst I’m on leave in Week 10, Mrs Peake will be the relieving Principal. Best wishes to everyone for Christmas and for a very safe and wonderful holiday.

Deputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s CornerDeputy Principal’s Corner Congratulations to everybody involved in Literacy Pro this year. Teachers have done a remarkable job promoting and driving this wonderful reading program and students have continued to work hard to read and complete numerous quizzes. I have been impressed with your dedication. As the long Summer holidays draw near, it is vital that all students across the school continue to develop their love and passion for reading. Reading is an important part of a child’s education and helps develop their creative thinking and writing techniques. Reading is like just about everything else in life, the more you do it the better you get. When children stop reading for extended periods of time they often take a few steps backwards in their reading improvement. For this reason, it is important to encourage children to keep reading during the holidays despite the distraction of friends, relatives and holiday events. I encourage all families to take time to read during the holidays. Share a book as a family, ask questions about the texts read and make predictions before reading a book. You could read magazines, newspapers, articles from the internet, as long as you are developing your comprehension skills. Visit your local library, share books with friends, read to your brothers and sisters. One of the best ways to keep the children engaged in reading is to integrate everyday activities into the reading experience. For instance, if you are baking something, have them take turns reading the ingredients of the recipe. Having them read Christmas cards as they arrive in the mail is another great way to involve them. These types of activities don’t even register in the child’s minds as reading time. All teachers at Wattle Grove have been impressed with the students’ dedication to reading this year and would love to see all families continue to promote this at home during the holiday. You could maybe add a good book

to your ‘Christmas Wish List’. Encourage your child to take part in writing activities during the holiday. Write letters to friends, family, even Santa. Write diaries and journals of their daily activities and outings. Write Christmas cards, Christmas poems or holiday stories. Learning doesn’t have to end when School does. Have a wonderful holiday. Junior Assembly Rm 2 & 4Junior Assembly Rm 2 & 4Junior Assembly Rm 2 & 4Junior Assembly Rm 2 & 4 Kindergarten Red students from Room 2 and Room 4 hosted the Junior Assembly. The students put smiles on the faces of everyone in the audience by opening with an upbeat 'Good Morning' song welcoming parents, students, teachers and peers to the assembly. The students reflected on all of the fun and learning that has happened in Kindergarten this year. They all spoke clearly and confidently into the microphone and their wonderful 'WOW' writing was on display. The second musical item was a performance of 'Kindergarten Happened So Fast', and took inspiration from the hit movie Grease. Thank you to parents and caregivers for your hard work in helping the children with the costumes for the day. The students looked very cool indeed. Congratulations to Ryan and Jessica who received the Science awards, and Jack and Ivana who received the Values awards. Well done to all the merit award recipients Joy Harvey, Jemmia Wales and Gloria Fletcher Class Teachers

The poetry performance focused on the feeling that sharing and giving brings at Christmas time, which is a value our school holds dear. We even wear it on our crest! The students created cinquain poems, exploring the Christmas theme. We certainly discovered what a celebration Christmas can be when we focus on what’s important. Wishing all our Wattle Gove Community a very, merry Christmas! Tasha Blechynden and Jodie Harders Class Teachers

KateKateKateKate My name is Kate and I am in Room 27 with Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School since kindergarten. My mum comes from Broome, my Dad comes from Italy, my brother Paul and I were born in Perth. My hobbies are Squad swimming and Musical Theatre. I also used to dance at Peppermint Dance Company. I danced there for four years. What I like about this school is that there is a strict policy about bullying and the education standards and expectations are set very high. The students are nice and very friendly. I have made many great friends. All of the teachers are nice and are very focused on your education and helping you with your work. The students are nice, caring, fun and smart. I have enjoyed being a Red Faction Vice Captain for 2018 and participating in fundraisers. Those reasons are not all of why I like Wattle Grove Primary School. If I named all the reasons why I like WGPS it would go on forever and will be never ending.

TreyTreyTreyTrey I am 11 years old and I first came to Wattle Grove in Year 5. Even though I’ve only been here for seven months, I’ve really enjoyed being here. My family comes from Australia but my dad comes from America. I have one older brother and a pet dog. I play basketball for the Sonics in Kalamunda Sports Centre I really like Wattle Grove because it’s a caring school and everybody is nice to me here. Another reason why I think Wattle Grove is an amazing school is because no bullying is tolerated (since I got bullied a lot at my old school). My teacher, Mrs Lowther, always tries to make learning fun in some way. As a Student Representative, I want to show that I can be responsible and reliable. I would also like to organise some fundraisers and games for some of the children to play during recess and lunch.
