AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal Welcome back everyone to our final term for 2018 which I am certain is going to be another exciting and busy one for all the children and staff and, in particular, for our Year 6 students as they prepare for their Graduation from primary school. NAPLAN 2018 NAPLAN results for 2018 have now been published and all parents of Year 3 and 5 students have received their child’s results. The overall school results have been extremely positive with the school achieving above expected results in 8 of the 10 assessment domains with a high percentage of students achieving in the top 20 %. This is an excellent outcome. Continued performance, such as this, is a result of the whole school strategies being implemented, the consistency in teaching practice, the focus by the students to give 120% and the commitment by everyone to work together to provide our students with the best possible educational opportunities. In 2019, the NAPLAN assessment will be conducted on line which will require the children to be prepared to utilize their keyboard and ICT skills, particularly in Year 5 Writing. Pre Kindy Program Our Pre kindy Program commenced last week for the children who will be commencing Kindergarten in 2019. of learning areas. The Grand Final was conducted this week with Wattle Grove coming first against Edney Primary School and High Wycombe Primary School. Congratulations to all the Year 6 children who participated in this competition. You all did an amazing job and can be very proud of your outstanding efforts. Many thanks to Mrs Lowther and Mr Sanderson for coaching the teams throughout this series. Arts Festival — To enable parents and families the opportunity to see some of the work being conducted in the school in the Arts Learning Area, a special Arts Festival will be conducted next Tuesday, 23rd October between 4.30 – 6.30pm. This is an exciting event for our school and all families are invited to attend. The programme will be ongoing throughout the evening, with a Visual Arts exhibition of children’s work across the school, musical performances by our Junior and Senior Choirs and our guitar instrumentalists, as well as dancing demonstrations, the pantomime “Cenerentola” in Italian (Cinderella) and a special Circus performance by the children in Room 22. Staff and children are working very hard to provide an enjoyable and entertaining evening for everyone. Family tickets will be sent home today. World Teachers’ Day — Next Friday, 26th October is World Teacher’s Day. Hopefully, in life, we are all lucky enough to have one special teacher who we remember beyond our school years. Please take the time to ‘Thank a Teacher’ and complete the slip sent home today. Who was your favourite teacher? Tell your child about them and what made them special to you. Julie Roberts Principal

Deputy Principal’s Corner KALGOORLIE CAMP IS COMING6 This is an exciting time and many students have been looking forward to it as one of the biggest highlights of their time at Primary School. Since 2013, the School Camp has been to the famous and historic mining town of Kalgoorlie and the teachers also enjoy going on camp there, as well. Kalgoorlie is a very interesting place to go to and there are not too many places that offer the variety, the history and the interest you find in this large country mining town, out in the goldfields of Western Australia. It is not only a great camp, where you can learn so many new and different things, but it can be great socially, helping to build stronger friendships and to make new ones. It is also great for some students who may not have been away from home and their parents before, as here they are with very familiar people, who will support them through this time—their teachers, their school friends and their classmates. On the camp, the teachers and the students work together, not just in the learning activities, but also with the chores, such as setting up and then cleaning up the dining room, as well as, in the free time games and activities, so everyone is included and is ensured of a wonderful time. The camp staff do such a great job of the catering, providing lovely meals for all the different dietary requirements of the students. The Dorm rooms and bathrooms are well set up and the teachers have organised the dorms to ensure every student is sharing with some of their friends, so they feel comfortable and happy. The Boys and Girls Dorms are separated by a staff room and other teacher rooms, with teachers available 24 hours a day to assist students should they need it. The students travel to the camp on the Prospector and then they will have buses for visiting all the sights of Kalgoorlie. Parents who have any queries, please see their child’s class teacher. Camp is a great learning and sharing opportunity.

Kindy & Pre Primary Tabloids Wednesday, 10th October was our annual Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Sports Tabloid Event. Luckily the rain held off for the afternoon as the children rotated through a variety of sporting games. They especially enjoyed receiving a ribbon of participation and we are very proud of their efforts. We would like to thank the Year 6 students who helped coordinate the activities and for conducting themselves in a very responsible way. A special thanks to Mr Sherlock, Mr Sanderson, Mr Wallis and Mrs Peake who helped to set up the equipment. We really appreciate the support of the parents who were able to attend the event. Congratulations are extended to Orange Faction for winning the trophy on the day. Rikki White Teacher

Snakes Just a reminder to everyone that we are coming back into snake season. All children and parents should be particularly aware of the dangers and also what to do if a snake is sighted. Please remind your children to keep well away, if they see a snake and to tell a teacher/adult immediately.

4-Square Courts This week we have had new 4-square courts painted on the basketball courts. With our growing student population, these will provide the children with extra activities at recess and lunch times. There are 10 courts, so plenty to go around!

Joash

Hi my name is Joash and I am in Room 27 with Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary for two years. I was born in India and at the age of two we moved to Qatar. We stayed there for four years then we moved to Australia. I love playing tennis, hockey and cricket but most of all I enjoy playing video games. I have enjoyed my time at Wattle Grove Primary, in particular: ♦ The amazing teachers in our school. ♦ The education we have received and the resources we have access to. ♦ The student leadership program we are able to be a part of. I have many ideas for the

school. For example, a tidy toilet competition and we should raise money for less fortunate students.

Joshua

Hello, my name is Joshua. I am in Year Six and I am in Room 27 with Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School for at least eight years. My family is from Burma in South East Asia, but I was born in Western Australia. I have competed in soccer at Wattle Grove Primary School. I play at Hartfield Park, Forrestfield on the weekend. On Saturdays I do swimming squads at Belmont Oasis, I have been swimming since 2013. And I am currently doing Basketball in Canning City. I have been a Student Councillor in Year One and Year Four. I always put 120% to everything I do and I have excellent manners and I respect others. I like the tradition of having a school fete. We held one in 2015, to celebrate our centenary. There were rides and stalls and we raised a large amount of money for our school. I am an awesome person who can be trusted to get the job done.

Maunil Hello my name is Maunil and I first came to Wattle Grove Primary School at the end of Pre-Primary. My favourite subject is Maths and I’m very good at it. My family comes from India, a country in Southern Asia. I have one brother whose name is Vedent and my hobby is soccer. My whole family was born in India except for my little brother Vedant who was born in Perth, Western Australia. My family came to Australia when I was a one year old baby and I have lived here ever since. Wattle Grove Primary School is the best school I have ever seen. The teachers are all extremely kind and are always pushing me to do better. I think this is, by far, the cleanest school I have seen. Everyone is really nice and I have made many good friends. I have many amazing ideas that I think will make our school better than it is right now. I have represented Wattle Grove many times at interschool.
