AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal Our Faction Carnivals held last week were fantastic events for everyone. We managed to have fine days for both our Kindy/Pre-primary Carnival and the Faction Carnival on Friday. As usual, our students participated with great effort and enthusiasm. Their teamwork and cooperation was tremendous throughout the entire day and the leadership shown by our Faction Captains and Vice Captains was superb. This, together with wonderful parent and family support, all made for 2 perfect days. Thank you to the great team of volunteers who helped throughout the day – setting up, starting events, marshalling, judging, presenting ribbons and stickers, organising the lunches and assisting at the end of the day with packing all the equipment away. Many thanks to you all. Thank you also to our tremendous staff for all their hard work, not only throughout the day but also leading up to the event. Special thanks to Miss Baines for coordinating the K/P Carnival and to Mr Sherlock and Mrs Oliver for coordinating and organising such a wonderful and successful Faction Carnival once again this year. Congratulations to PURPLEthe winning faction for 2019 once again. Our Interschool Carnival will be held at Edney Primary School next Friday 20 September. Good luck to all our athletes who are competing. National Wattle Day was celebrated on the 2 nd September with a range of activities. Student Representatives greeted families with sprays of wattle, children in Rooms 11, 12, 18 and 29 delivered Wattle Day cards around the neighbourhood, some children wrote beautiful poems whilst others researched facts about the wattle and the whole school gathered in the undercover area and sang a wonderful Wattle Day Song. We have already had some residents comment on their appreciation of the children’s cards which is always wonderful to hear. I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating this special day at our school. As part of the School’s Reporting to Parents process, each class will host a Learning Journey for parents to attend in Week 10. These will take place in each classroom on Tuesday, 24 September between 2.00 - 3.30pm. This year the focus of the Learning Journey will be a S.T.E.M. project that the children have worked on throughout the term. The children will be able to demonstrate to parents their design, creation and appraisal processes that they conducted in their projects. As you go on your child’s Learning Journey, children are encouraged to explain each stage of the project and to answer any questions that parents may have. This is extremely important to your child’s learning as it demonstrates their understanding of what they have done. Learning Journeys usually take approximately 25 minutes. The teacher is present as a guide but is not there to discuss individual student progress, as many children will be conducting their Journeys at the same time. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. On Thursday 5th of September Room 14 and 25 hosted the Senior Assembly. We chose the theme of Reading to express how much we all love to read at Wattle Grove. Our assembly started with a catchy song called ‘Gotta Keep Reading’ and continued with a variety of short poems throughout. The students added actions and it definitely created an exciting performance. It was fantastic to see how hard the students worked to learn and memorise their speaking roles. Both classes also created Book Reviews for the WOW writing boards and made large book covers that they wore as their costume on the day. We would like to extend huge congratulations to all of the students for their fabulous assembly performance! We have been so impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication shown. Your hard work and efforts definitely shone through! Miss Zaffino and Miss Blechynden

Learning Mathematics creates opportunities for and enriches the lives of all Australians. The Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built. At Wattle Grove Primary School, a dedicated Numeracy Block is embedded into each school day to provide opportunities for all students to develop and apply their mathematical knowledge and understanding. Alongside the content strands of the curriculum, students engage with Mathematics by demonstrating their depth of knowledge through the proficiency strands of; Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Wattle Grove Primary School is committed to providing our students with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the 'how' and 'why' of Mathematics. Numero® Club meets each Friday in the Library. Students in Yr 3-6 are invited to come along and sharpen their Numero® skills. Numero® is a great tool for improving the accuracy and speed of mathematical computation skills, along with developing strategic mathematical thinking. A very big thank you to Mrs Lowther and Mr Eaves who run Numero® Club each week. The Numero® Interschool Challenge will be held during Term 4, 2019 at Bletchley Park Primary School. Our Wattle Grove Numero® Interschool Squad has been selected and will be training very hard over the coming weeks in preparation for the big event. Congratulations and our very best wishes go to the our selected squad. We know they will represent Wattle Grove Primary School proudly. Packs of Numero® are also available for purchase at the front office for $15, with profits going to our P & C.

LoganLoganLoganLogan I have been at this school for seven years and my favourite subject is technology. I have one little sister called Abigail, and she is in Year Three. I participate in guitar lessons and PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge). It is sometimes hard to keep up with all of the work that builds up, however, I have managed to pull through it all and have surfaced. I have enjoyed my time here and will for another year. The things I particularly like about this school: • How the teachers make working hard a lot of fun way. • The fact that this school keeps getting first place in the best school competition. • How easy and accessible it is. During the year, I want to have a fundraising event to help get more money to upgrade the playgrounds. I would like to inspire the junior students to be good members of our school by helping to explain the ‘Wattle Grove Way’ and Code of Conduct.

OliviaOliviaOliviaOlivia Hi my name is Olivia. I am in Room 11. I am eleven years old. I live with my brother, my sister and my mum. My dad and half-brother live in Sydney. When I was young I lived in Sydney, then I moved to Perth. I have been here at Wattle Grove Primary School since part way through Pre-Primary. It’s a great school where you learn great things and get better at learning and sports. Some of my favourite things at Wattle Grove are to have fun and learn new things about the school and the world. My favourite thing is to do sport, because you can have a great time and you might get into interschool sports and be the best in the school. It’s a lot of fun and you get a chance for medals and ribbons. As a Student Representatives, I will be responsible and respectful. I will be kind to other students. I

would like to help other students and teachers at recess and lunchtime.

AliyahAliyahAliyahAliyah Hi, I am Aliyah. I am in Room 17 and I have attended this school (Wattle Grove Primary School) ever since Year One. I did not originally come from China, but my Grandma does, I call her PorPor because that’s Chinese for grandma. I am also Irish and my Dad is from Nepal. I have one brother that also attends Wattle Grove Primary School. The first hobby I ever had was ballet; I did not succeed very much. The next thing I remember doing was gymnastics, I did enjoy it but I found the teacher VERY strict. I achieved a yellow belt in Taekwondo but don’t remember much from it. I am very unique as I am double jointed in my shoulders and my middle finger on my left hand. I am delighted I am in Wattle Grove Primary School as everyone here pursues 120% effort. We all expect high standards and we never give up on anything no matter how hard, just like in our school song “we try to do our best”. In this school we have kind staff and students who will never let anyone down. I want to achieve many things as a Student Representative, such as organising events helping other

students and staff. I am very loyal and everybody can trust me therefore I will be on the look-out for an upset student and I will try to do the most to cheer them up. I will be a great role model for the younger students. I will

organise events for a good cause and I look forward to helping fundraise for the Year 6’s as a Student Representative.

KaityKaityKaityKaity I have attended Wattle Grove Primary School for seven years. My immediate family and I were all born in Western Australia. My family have supported me for all of those years by helping me when I need it. After school, I normally run around the bush and the block a few times with my friend Trinity. I like to draw and write in the afternoon. I also play on the monkey bars. I have many friends at the school. Being friends with them has been so memorable. I have enjoyed all of the fun times we have had. Wattle Grove is such a great school because of the safe and supportive learning environment. When I got called up by Ms Roberts, I was surprised and exited for this new opportunity but I didn’t know how tough the role was. I decided to make a commitment to make sure our school is a safe and joyful learning environment where everyone feels included.

SanjSanjSanjSanj I have been here at Wattle Grove since Year Four. I have created bonds with many students and I have made many friends. My Mother is from Chandigarh and my Father is from Punjab. I have a younger brother and cousins in Western Australia and I have a many cousins in India. I study with a tutor and a trainer. Some of the reasons I have enjoyed my time at Wattle Grove are: • The students are funny and enjoyable. • The teachers are helpful and make us want to learn. • The student representatives are around each corner of the school ensuring our safety. During my time as a Student Representative I want to help any children that are either stressed or are in trouble. I would like to spread awareness about Diabetes and help to raise much needed funds for a cure.

KaneKaneKaneKane I first came to Wattle Grove Primary School at the beginning of Kindergarten, in 2012. My family were all born in Australia. I have one brother that is younger than me. I play many sports outside of school and I am a member of the Forrestfield Tee ball Club. I have enjoyed my time at Wattle Grove Primary School, in particular; I enjoyed the way my teachers make lessons fun, the work is hard, but not to tricky and how we got to work with buddy classes. During my time being a Student Representative, I would like to help organise fund raising ideas for the school to be able to get new library books. I think all the students will enjoy some of my ideas they might be popular around the school. I will also help my fellow students that need my help with such things as cleaning the undercover area or helping the younger students get their play equipment at recess and lunch. You can trust that I will look after the school and make sure it is running well.

YEAR 6 STUDENTS VISIT

PARLIAMENT HOUSE by Alka Nair

On Thursday, 29 August 2019, eight Year 6 students went to Parliament House in Perth.

The students were invited, by Mr Stephen Price, to enjoy lunch and a tour of Parliament House. We

were greeted by our tour guide, Natalie Machin. Before we began our tour we each received a

visitor’s badge from the receptionists. The badge had our names, school, our lunch host’s name

(Mr Stephen Price) and the date.

Following check in, we went up a few flights of stairs and Natalie Machin explained each side of the

Parliament House, one side was the Legislative Council (Upper House) and the other side was the

Legislative Assembly. We learned that the seats on the Legislative Council side were red and the

seats on the Legislative Assembly are blue. However, the seats on the Legislative Assembly side

were supposed to be green but when they first built Parliament House they ran out of money and

blue dye was cheaper than green dye.

Parliament House has walls that are filled with paintings created by Aboriginal artists. There were

some very intricate paintings and others were traditional dot paintings. Mr Price greeted us during

our tour of the Aboriginal artwork.

Following our tour, we went to the dining room to take our seats. We learned how to eat properly

and with good manners, thanks to Ms Balogh, as the dining room was very fancy and elegant.

After we ate, a bell rang multiple times, indicating that we had four minutes to enter the Legislative

Assembly room to observe an active discussion. We sat on the balcony and we were able to

observe the politicians below. It was very exciting, waiting the discussion. We were only able to

stay for fifteen minutes before we had to leave to go back to school.

Student: Alka Nair

Parliament House was an amazing experience and a stunning building. We had a grand – and deli-

cious – time there. We are very grateful to have had this opportunity.

Thank you Ms Roberts and thank you Mr Price.

We would like to thank the fire fighters from Welshpool who visited our Year 3 students on Thursday. They talked to the children about fire

safety in and around homes and how to react safely in a fire or dangerous situation. The students were lucky enough to view the

Fire Truck and the equipment used during emergencies. This information could save a life.

YEAR 5 EXCURSION TO FREMANTLE

Rooms 8, 26 and 29 enjoyed an exciting and educational day in

Fremantle on Wednesday. We began our day with a tour of the

Prison, learning about the convicts. We heard many stories of the

prisoners, including Moondine Joe. We had a brief walk to

Cicerellos, down by the harbor, where we learnt about the

different marine life and how to keep our beaches safe and tidy.

Our lunch was amazing, the fish and chips were tasty. Our final

part of the day involved us searching for facts about Fremantle,

following a trail near the Roundhouse. The students and staff

were extremely tired after the long day and the bus journey

back to school was very quiet.
