FACTION ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
2017
PRINCIPAL’S PATTER
Hello Everyone
We certainly had a beautiful fine day for our Faction Athletics Carnival held
yesterday. It was great to see everyone working together to make our
Carnival an enjoyable and successful experience. The spirit of the students
was excellent and they are to be congratulated for the great determination
they displayed for their factions. Well done to Odin for winning the carnival.
A big thank you to everyone who ‘helped out’ - with special thanks to Mr
Cox, who did an outstanding job in organising the carnival.
See the photos in this week’s newsletter.
We now look forward to the Interschool Carnival to be held at Lake Monger
Primary School next Friday 15 September. Good luck to all our students who
will be competing.
Today the students in Years 3 and 5 will be bringing home their NAPLAN
(National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy) reports. These
assessments were held in May this year for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9
in all Australian states and territories. An information pamphlet for parents
will accompany each child’s report.
Enjoy your weekend (P.S.- “Go the Eagles”!!)

Book Week 2017
Week 6 found the students at Balcatta PS celebrating the annual CBCA (Children’s Book Council of
Australia) Book Week. ‘Escape to Everywhere’ through books was this year’s theme. The celebration
acknowledges and recognises successful Australian authors and illustrators who have published in the
last year.
This year the winners are;
Book of the Year: Younger Readers - “Rockhopping” by Trace Balla
Book of the Year: Early Childhood – “Go Home Cheeky Animals” by Johanna Bell and Dion
Beasley
Picture Book of the Year – “Home in the Rain” by Bob Graham
New Illustrators – “The Patchwork Bike” by Maxine Beneba Clarke, illustrated by Van T Rudd.
These titles along with the Shortlisted and some notables are held in the school library and are
available for the students to loan.
The Pre Primary classes had a special library session with our very own Nicole Murphy who read her
own published story “My Bali Holiday” and entertained the students with her travel bag full of
goodies for a Bali beach day.
The Year 1, 2 and 3 students travelled to Osborne Library and had an informative hour with local
author and illustrator Samantha Hughes. Samantha talked about her own writing and art work
experiences before guiding the students through a great drawing and storytelling session where all
the students drew some great comic characters. There are some budding artists amongst the junior
students here at Balcatta PS!! Samantha was kind enough to give us two signed character drawings
from the session that will be hung in the library for everyone to enjoy. The students are to be
congratulated on their exemplary behaviour on the day.
I challenged the Year 4, 5 and 6 students to have a “Blind Date with a Book” to see where it may take
them. The books were chosen from the Fiction collection but did not include any of the current
popular titles and were wrapped in paper. There was a short blurb on the outside to give a hint as to
what the novel was about. All I asked was that the students read at least the first few pages of the
book even if it wasn’t what they were expecting. Some students went on to read the whole book
while others have told me that they didn’t finish theirs. Not all blind dates work out in real life but I
was happy to see the students take the risk of being challenged to read something different.
Happy reading everyone,
Mrs Keen
School Library Officer
