Term Two 2020

Dear Families,

We will always look back on Term 2 of 2020 as a strange time. Despite this, I am very thankful for our community which has been able to flex and adapt to the restrictions that have been applied.

Our Chapel times have continued well with Mr Pumpa producing a movie each week which often incorporated students acting out scenes from the Bible in the theme of God’s Kingdom. In addition to this, he provided discussion questions for students to think about in their form groups.

Many of our House Competitions have been missed including our Spelling Bee, Cross Country and a new competition which was to be called the Country Carnival, which was going to include a number of old time events like sack races, wheelbarrow and egg and spoon races. Despite these losses, Mr Crowther has put together an Athletics Carnival schedule over 5 weeks for the 9 -17yr age groups during Friday sport time. Thanks also goes to our Grounds Team who have our oval looking great for these events. Mr Crowther has done an excellent job of coordinating sport, and I was really impressed with the Learner Link Sports page which he has put together to give our students a one stop shop for all sorts of information on sport at DCC.

Our teachers have been working extremely hard this term and are finalising reports before taking a well-earned rest. Well done to our Secondary students who have just finished an exam block. Reports will be sent home via email during the holidays and Parent Teacher interviews will be held Week 2 of Term 3.

I’m looking forward to Term 3, and am particularly looking forward to the Musical, ‘Peter Pan’ which is scheduled for the end of Week 8. I’m also looking forward to seeing progress in the construction of our new Enrichment Building which has been held up because of the need for some redesign work on the foundations.

Well we made it to the end of Semester 1, 2020. It has certainly been an interesting and hectic last few months and it is great to get to the end, to reflect on where we’ve been and look forward to where we’re heading. I hope you will all be able to take some time as a family to rest, relax and enjoy the time together whether you are staying at home or taking the opportunity to get away over the holidays.

Absentees

Students are expected to be at school every school day unless there is a valid medical or family issue. Learning is happening right up to the last day and students are expected to be here until then. School events held during school hours are part of the curriculum and students are required to attend. The only exception is during exam blocks, where students are given the option of being at school or at home to study, but these are the only choices, there is no third option.

Students not following correct absentee procedures can be regarded as truanting. If your child is telling you they don't have work to do, or they don’t need to be at school today, or anything similar, please call the office and we will be more than happy to clarify the situation.

Report Cards

Most Secondary students have been busy over the last couple of weeks completing assessments, whether assignments or exams. Secondary students will be receiving their report cards via email in the holidays. Please take the time to discuss these reports with your children and help them to reflect on the feedback provided. While every effort is made to check reports before they are sent home there is still a small chance that errors may occur. If this is the case please let us know straight away so the error can be fixed and a new report generated.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Parents have the opportunity to sit down with teachers and discuss their students' results at the beginning of next term. Interviews will be being held in Week 2 on the evening of Tuesday 21st July, starting at 3:30pm. Please use the online booking process (details in the Notice section of this newsletter) to arrange interviews with teachers. All secondary teachers will be located in B1 and B2 on the night.

Photo Day

Photo Day is also scheduled for Week 2, on Wednesday 22nd July. While we like to see students looking well-presented in their uniforms at all times, this is one day when we have a higher expectation of students in this regard. Please take advantage of the time over the holidays to ensure students have haircuts that will look

Secondary Schoolneat and are appropriate for DCC standards. As per page 39 of the College handbook, students’ hair must be:

• Girls Hair• Hair at shoulder length or longer must be tied up. Shoulder length hair is defined as hair touching

or resting on the shoulders.• If hair is above the shoulder, the sides must be off the face and pinned back.• Fringes are to be above the eyes or pinned back.• Ribbons, scrunchies and headbands (with no attachments or adornments) must be navy blue or

white.• Hair is to be a natural colour. • As hats are to fit fully over the scalp, students are not to wear hairstyles that make this difficult or

impossible.

• Boys Hair: • To be worn off the face (clear of eyebrows), short sides (clear of ears), above the collar.• Not to be cut shorter than Blade ‘4’ length.• No dreadlocks, or other fashion statements.• Faces to be clean shaven.

Please also take the time to check that students have the correct complement of uniform items and that they fit and look well presented. The Uniform Shop will be closed over the holiday break, reopening Monday 13th July for your uniform needs.

To close on a personal note, I knew there’d be some challenges coming into a new role in a new school and that has definitely been the case this semester. Thank you to everyone for your support, prayers and understanding as we’ve travelled through this time together.

Primary SchoolReports and Parent Teacher Interviews

Reports will be emailed to families at the beginning of the holidays. Reports will be followed up by interviews on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday 21st July.

Why should you come to a Parent /Teacher Interview?1. Learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development.2. Ask about how they have settles back into school after ‘online learning’.3. Get to know the teacher better.4. Help the teacher understand more about your child.5. Decide on ways that both you and the teacher can best support your child.

Interviews are limited in time so to get the most out of your interview, it helps if you take some time to prepare. Teachers will have assessment results and behaviour comments to share with you, so for you to prepare my advice would be to:-

1. Read your child’s school report carefully. 2. Compile a list of questions and take them with you so you stay on track and you come away with the

information you want.

What questions should I ask?1. Is my child performing at grade level?2. What data do you have that supports the mark given on the report card?3. What are my child’s strengths?4. How can my child do better?5. Has my child been doing their homework?6. Is my child organised?7. Is my child doing their best?8. Does my child ask for help when it is needed?9. Does my child get on well with others?

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Just a reminder that the Reading Challenge is open and concludes on the 28th August. This challenge encourages children to read or be read to (depending on the age) as many books as possible. If you do not have a form or need an additional form please let your class teacher know.

Primary SchoolTutoring Term 3

Tutoring will commence on Wednesday 15th July (Week 1) and conclude on Wednesday 16th September (Week 10). Just a reminder that it is on from 3:15pm – 4:00pm.

Primary Captains

In this time when we are still not able to have large gatherings, the Primary Captains have been working hard to try and keep connections with and amongst the Primary students. They are taking devotions one morning a week in different classes and they have just commenced a lunch time activity for boys and girls in Years 4-6.

The girls ‘Forever Friends’ group allows to girls to spend some time getting to know each other by playing games, chatting, having devotions and talking about what girls like to talk about.

In Lego Lunch the boys have the opportunity to connect through the avenue of Lego- designing, building and making mates.

Kindy goes Red to raise money for MS Readathon

The Kindy group recently held a ‘Red Day’ to support Emily and her endeavour to raise money for the MS Readathon. Mrs Kuhl and Mrs Rossouw did a great job organising a day full of redness. The group raised $37 to help Emily’s cause. Well done everyone!

Pre Prep Reports

There has been a lot of growing, learning and play happening in the Pre Prep rooms over the last Semester. Parents can pick up a report that has been prepared for their child from the Pre Prep rooms. Please make sure that you get your child’s report.

If you have any questions about anything on the report please feel free to talk to the relevant teacher, Mrs Willett or Mrs Gibbs.

Devotion

Recall God's Lovingkindness To You

'Your lovingkindness is before my eyes." Psalm 26:3 NKJV

The story’s told of a little boy who was asked, ‘Do you say your prayers every night?’ He replied, ‘No, some nights I don’t need anything!’

We may smile, but the point is painfully obvious. If the only time your husband or wife communicated with you was when they were in trouble or had a need they couldn’t meet, how long do you think your relationship would last? There must be a balance between your praises and your petitions.

You say, ‘If the Lord is big enough to create and run the universe, I doubt He’s bothered when somebody as insignificant as me fails to say thanks.’ Not so! When Jesus healed ten lepers and only one returned to give thanks, He asked, ‘Where are the other nine?’ (Luke 17:17 NIV) If God dealt with you solely on the basis of His righteousness and your tendency towards unrighteousness, you’d be sunk! But He doesn’t.

He says, ‘I have loved you… with an everlasting love.

With unfailing love I have drawn you to Myself.’ (Jeremiah 31:3 NLT)

Realising this, the psalmist wrote, ‘Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live.’ (Psalm 63:3–4 NKJV)

Again he writes: ‘I will… praise Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your Word above all Your name. In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul.’ (Psalm 138:2–3 NKJV)

Someone quipped, ‘God doesn’t mind getting invoiced as long as He gets thanked!’ So, take a moment and recall God’s lovingkindness to you.

Q PERFORMANCE ACADEMY Enhance your game with elite touch football skills training at the Q Performance Academy.

The Q Performance Academy is a six-session touch football clinic for competitive athletes ages 12-16 looking to elevate their game. At the Q Performance Academy, you will compete individually throughout the touch football skills circuits, and

take on your peers in head to head competitions to improve all facets of your game, on and off the touch field.

College Track & Field Carnival/ Friday Afternoon Sports

Students aged 9 years and older are competing in a modified Track & Field Carnival each Friday from 1.30pm as part of Friday afternoon sports. Field events for Year 3 students will be completed during PE lessons.

Results from the first week of events are available on learner.link with ribbons being handed out through form class.

Congratulations to Josiah Burstow and Ella Wilson who set new records in Week 1.

House points after the first week are:

Darling Downs Track & Field

The decision was made to cancel the 2020 Darling Downs carnival. Subsequently there will be no Bunya District or Inner Downs carnivals.

Dalby Touch

Dalby Touch is getting ready to start back with the first games scheduled for week 2 after the holidays. There will be health rules to follow. The season is continuing from the start of the year, so the boys, girls and open mixed teams will continue. No additional fees are payable for this season.

All Schools Touch

Primary, girls, boys and open mixed teams will restart next term with teams competing in various carnivals as they proceed.

It has been great joining the community at Dalby Christian College this term. It has been an enjoyable term even though it started with the challenge of learning about music in online lessons. The term, however, ended in full swing with students back in normal classes and getting the chance to create music and learn about musical elements being the building blocks that make up music as we know it.

Some highlights were:-

Primary

Music lessons beginning with students grooving to music with along with the animated video DJ called Pray Z.

• P - Year 2 moving to music as well as singing and playing while they learnt about tempo (fast/slow) pitch (high/low) and dynamics (loud/soft).

• Year 3-4 playing recorders and Glockenspiels and learning to improvise and make rhythms.

• Year 5-6 learning about music that unites people and beginning the process of making their own war cries.

Secondary

Year 7’s learnt to play guitar. After beginning by making cardboard guitars during online lessons, they were able to play some chords and famous guitar riffs. They also learned to create music to portray a particular mood using the computer program “Music Maker”.

Year 8’s learnt about electronic music and worked on creating theme music for an imaginary video game

called “Farming at Dalby”. They used computer programs called Beepbox and Musescore to make music that represented aspects of farming such as tractors, horses, motor bikes and cows! They were able to come up with some interesting sound effects and music.

Year 11’s focused on composing music to represent a particular idea, emotion or picture. They learned to develop a motif (short sequence on notes) to create a musical representation of their idea.

Instrumental Music

Members of our Concert Band have been working on new repertoire this term and they are improving each week. We practice every Thursday afternoon in the MPC and we already have a couple of songs almost to performance level.

Our small Drumline ensemble has been working hard on some new Cadences and are looking forward to be able to perform these in the near future.

Finally, I am keen to create a rock band that is able to play worship music, so if you play guitar, drums or keyboard I would love to hear from you.

COLLEGE TRACKSUIT

Our new design tracksuit is compulsory this year after a two year integration

period. The Uniform Room is fully stocked in all sizes for both the jacket

and pants and we look forward to helping with your uniform needs. The Uniform Room is open during school hours Monday to Thursday, and from

8.30am-1.00pm on Fridays.

STUDENT DEPARTURES

Families leaving the College are asked to notify the College and complete a departure form as soon as is possible. This allows for staff planning and

timely fee adjustments.

Parents are reminded that the following rules apply for medication at school:

* parents are to inform the office in writing if their student needs to have prescribed medication at school. A form is available at reception for this.* medication must be in the original container on which the doctor/ pharmacists’ instructions are clearly labelled.* medication is to be held at the office and will be administered to the student as prescribed.* over the counter medications including Panadol and Nurofen cannot by law be administered at school unless the same procedure as for prescribed medication, as above, is used.
