Dear Parents, I hope you all managed to have some down time during the vacation. Certainly, our students all seem refreshed and ready for a new term and a new semester. Firstly of course, there are things to do to round off Semester 1. Teachers are still involved in completing and moderating assessments. This process will be finished in Week 3 and we will issue written reports in Week 4. From Week 3 though, we are looking for- ward to getting back to the re- introduction of all our teaching and learning programs, includ- ing philosophy. With the gradual easing of Covid-19 restrictions you will notice a gradual increase in the type of activities that were I impossible in Term 2. I have approved some excursions but the Year 6 Camp is still under review. Year 6 parents will receive a survey today to determine the number of students likely to attend if conditions permit the camp to proceed. We will recommence student led assemblies but for the time being these will be done using an online platform with students remaining in classrooms. Our dance program, while modified, will also recommence this term in Week 3. We will also be investigating as to how our Semester 2 Interschool and school based sporting programs can operate. Two of the highlights of a normal Term 3 are the visit to the school by our sister school, and the Excellence Expo. Needless to say, Otemon will not be visiting us this year. To keep the relationship valued for both schools, we have begun planning for an online link up later in the year using a suitable platform. Another very important aspect of the sister school relationship is our Japan Study Tour which would normally would take place in September next year. It is difficult to predict at this stage whether the Japan Study Tour for September next year will proceed. I will continue to get advice from Education Queensland International. The Excellence Expo will not happen in its normal format. In September, to keep this important event valued, we will acknowledge our studentsexcellent learning by having them prepare for you a gift packof samples of their learning. Dear Parents,

I hope you all managed to have some down time during the vacation. Certainly, our students all seem refreshed and ready for a new term and a new semester.

Firstly of course, there are things to do to round off Semester 1. Teachers are still involved in completing and moderating assessments. This process will be finished in Week 3 and we will issue written reports in Week 4. From Week 3 though, we are looking for-ward to getting back to the re-introduction of all our teaching and learning programs, includ-ing philosophy.

Our dance program, while modified, will

also recommence this term in Week 3.

In September, to keep this important event valued, we will acknowledge our students’ excellent learning by having them prepare for you a “gift pack” of samples of their learning.

While many of the protocols instituted as part of the management process for minimising the risk of infection remain in force, there are a few restrictions with respect to library operations being lifted from the start of Week 2.

The library will be open for student borrowing only before school from 8.30 – 8.45 am each morning Monday to Friday.

For the time being, we are continuing with the quarantine regime where all returns are set aside for 72 hours before they become available for loan.

Lunchtime clubs are resuming next week.

Reading in Years 3 to 6

This term, our year 3 to 6 students will recommence their reading groups. During these groups, the students have been developing their reading skills through our Holland Park State School literacy program for two hours each week. With the assistance of a group of teacher aids, the students are explicitly taught the four reading program elements – vocabulary, guided reading, comprehension and fluency. In particular, the students are taught the Holland Park State School comprehension strategies including

predicting, main idea, author’s purpose, prior knowledge, questioning, summarising, making connections, inferring and author’s purpose. All of our students are encouraged to continue to read each night at home and to continue borrowing books from the school library in order to consolidate their great work in reading groups at home.

The new furniture ordered earlier in the year for the library’s Computer Lab 2 was installed last Friday and set up ready for use by Mr Collyer, our IT person, on Monday.

As a result, lab is now a much more ‘user friendly’ space, both for students and teachers, with people seated at all 30 computers now having a clear view of the TV screen at the front of the room. The plan is that, by the end of the year, the few remaining laptops will be replaced by desktop computers.

to improve student learning outcomes. We were one of 35 schools around Australia in 2019 to embark on a nationally acclaimed program aimed at fostering greater ties between Australia and Cambodia through education. To promote a presence of Cambodia at our school a garden will be created. There are currently 18 Year 6 students involved in the Cambodia Club and they are all very excited to create our ‘Cambodia Corner’ garden. This will be a small area of the school dedicated to making a Cambodian presence in our school. I would like to ask our school community for help. We are looking for donations of plants to place in the garden. Plant types such as Bromeliads, Ginger plants and Orchids are going to make up the bulk of our garden.
