After being for sale for many years, Mom’s Restau-rant sold and has since reopened as Fannie’s On The Island. Continuing the trend we’ve seen in recent times of long time business changing hands and bringing new ideas, fresh coats of paint and more changes to bring in tourists and locals alike. We sat down with Fannie to ask her about her new venture as one of the popular establishments on the island. While she’s quick to mention she’s French, if you talk to her for even a moment, you’ll realize her English is quite good.

Clippings : Can you tell us a little bit about yourself ? Where are you from?

Fannie : I’m from Dubreuilville (North of Wawa) My maid-en name is Pelletier. I have a big French crazy fun loving family. I was raised in Sault Ste. Marie and went to college in Edmond. My marketing/hospitality career started on

cruise ships as a stand-up comic in Fort Lauder-dale and evolved into the corporate casino world from Windsor - Sault Ste. Marie back to Detroit, Michigan. In 2004 I met my husband Ken (aka Big Daddy) on McCarrel Lake while home visiting family. We got married here on the Island in 2006 at Mountain United Church and bought 102 acres in Desbarats. That is when we decided to start farming. McFadden Acres Certified Organic Farm was established in 2007.

Clippings : I’m sure our readers who are not aware of McFadden Acres will be curious to learn more about the farm.

Fannie : Farming is not for the weak. It requires passion and drive and the skills to properly manage constant Mother Nature challenges! We just absolutely loved being outdoors, surrounded by nature and having our hands in the dirt! It was an absolute blessing to be able to share our bounty through Farmers Markets and our VIP Club home veggie delivery program. We home delivered to just a little over 100 families from St Joe to the Sault...Homesteading is not for everyone, but man we loved it. It was pure quality of life for us! To be able to sustain oneself. There is absolutely nothing more healthy and gratifying!

Clippings : Are you going to be incorporating food grown at the farm to the restaurant for more farm to table meals ect?

Fannie : Absolutely. I’m a huge believer in supporting lo-cal foods and small business owners! It’s instrumental to maintain local sustainability. I look forward to growing veggies on my own farm again and I even have plans to start an herb and fresh greens garden here at the restau-rant! The very first thing I purchased for the restau-rant was huge amounts of local onions, garlic, carrots, cabbage, squashes and apples through numerous local producers. Anything I could get my hands on so late in the growing season. It’s important to share the love and support. I have a cold room at the farm and it’s perfect for winter storage. More importantly, we will eventually have some “all local-food theme nights” featuring guest chefs to create special 50-miles local meals. It’s only the beginning to an exciting new adventure!

Clippings : Is there anything in particular that drew you to purchasing the restaurant? There are lots of different businesses for sale in the area and the restaurant had been for sale a long time, why was now the right time?

Fannie : It took a while for me to get back into the groove of things after the sudden passing of my husband. I real-ized that I wasn’t done; I wasn’t done learning, sharing, contributing! When tragedy strikes there comes a point when you realize “you either give-up, give-in or give it all you got!” This is me giving it all I got! My friends and family are not surprised I opened a restaurant, as they know I’ve always been passionate about good healthy comfort foods. Opening a restaurant is something I always talked about. Why here? I simply fell in love with the property and on a personal level my husband is resting here along with his dad and brother, so being on the island feels like home! It totally excites me that it has 5 acres of beautiful trees! So much opportunities to evolve, make it more than just a farm to table restaurant!

Clippings : You’ve been open now a few weeks, overall

how have things been going?

Fannie : It’s was a transition; an exchange of baton! The seller Line Webster was/is absolutely amazing! There is no way I could have opened only 3 days after getting the keys for the Deer Check Week Hunter event without her help and support. I was also very blessed that some of her staff wanted to stay on and continue this fun journey with me. I’m super grateful for Melissa Strum who has been promoted to restaurant supervisor, Kate Smith who has been promoted to lead server, and Faye Lapping! A great bunch of girls full of knowledge and spunk.

Clippings : You have already started on some renovation projects. The fire pit seemed to be a big hit with the hunters and students who ran the deer check station, we’ve noticed a few more touch-ups in the short time you’ve owned the place, do you have more plans? In-cluding the “corner” store?

Fannie : Yes, I’m looking forward to the spring to com-plete our outside renovations. Plans are in place to repair some infrastructure, paint, enhance the entryway and outside patio! The corner store, Fannie’s Grab’n Go is open for Lottery sales right now and will soon become so much more! Focusing on local products & producers! My main attention right now is the restaurant. Lots of new staff learning a new menu, recipes and of course my way of cooking and presenting it all. Thank you kind-ly to the community for being patient and supportive during this transition as we grow and get better!

As far as events, I have lots of ideas, goals and some plans are in place. The next 3 months are going to be filled with fun winter theme nights and some family days with kids specials and activities! The every Friday Fish Fry at Fannie’s launched last week. Plus, this com-ing Sunday, Dec 8th at 6pm we’re launching live instru-mental music during dinner hours. The Kitchen Treble (an enthusiastic island band) will be entertaining us! Dinner & Show at Fannie’s is just a few days away. Clippings : Thanks to Fannie for answering all our questions.

St. JoeCreature Feature

Common Redpoll

With their size and erratic flying, they can almost be mistaken for leaves or seedpods blowing in the wind. They’re small brown and white finches with red spots on their foreheads who blend in perfectly with their surroundings. They travel in flocks of several hundreds in habitats ranging from open fields to conifer forests.

They prefer birch seeds but will also eat willow, alder, spruces, pines, grasses, sedges, and wildflowers. In the summer they will eat berries and insects and spiders. They have throat pouches for temporarily storing seeds. They fly from plant to plant gathering the seeds then fly to a safer and warmer location to swallow the seeds.

Redpolls breed in he arctic and winter in southern Canada/northern US. During the winter, redpolls bur-row in the snow, sometimes up to four feet, to keep warm but can survive temperatures up to -54 Celsius. Their numbers are numerous, estimating in the tens of millions all around the globe.

ANNOUNCEMENTSWhile the Ontario Building Code requires that building permits must be obtained for the placement of shipping container (e.g. sea cans) on any lands, there are presently no zoning regulations on the Island specific to such struc-tures. The St. Joseph Island Planning Board has been requested to assist the munici-palities on the Island in drafting a zoning by-law amendment to regulate the location and use of shipping containers. It is hoped that the result will be a common regulation for the entire Island. This matter will be considered in detail at the Planning Board’s regular meeting on December 9th, 2019 which will be held at the Township of Hilton Municipal Office, 2983 Base Line Rd. (Hwy. 548), Hilton Beach, be-ginning at 7:30 p.m. This is an open meeting and the general public is welcome to attend.
