From conversations already had, both were successful and enjoyable. My thanks to staff who gave up a considerable portion of their holidays to make the trips possible. The Rush Chapel Our beautiful new Chapel is now all but complete; however, a few works continue (and we are waiting on some furniture). For this reason, it is not possible for visitors to access the building at unspecified times. Father Noel has begun familiarising our students about the significance of the building and introducing them to the protocols that are of importance in this sacred space. We are aware that many parents are looking forward to seeing the inside of the Chapel. For the next few Mondays, parents are invited to visit and view the Chapel from 7.30am to 8.30am, when Father Noel will be in attendance to explain all the significant aspects of the building, contents, as well as the history behind the name – the Rush Chapel – with the adjacent building being called the Elizabeth Irwin Centre. We look forward to seeing you there. Website I also encourage you to visit our new website (which went live during the school holidays). We are very pleased with the fresh, new look! The format means that news can be added regularly and you will not have to wait for the next newsletter for many of the latest events to come up. We are therefore in the process of reviewing the way in which the newsletter is presented; however, in the immediate future, news will be available to the school community in both formats. Also – please follow us on Facebook and Twitter; and look out for our Freddie’s Flashback Fridays as part of our recognition of those who went before us and on the occasion of our 25 th Anniversary. Strategic Plan As flagged in the previous newsletter, we commence the consultation phase of our next Strategic Plan this term. This is something to which the Executive staff and School Council are very much looking forward. Dr Liz Pattison, who facilitated our present plan, will do so again, with the final document due to be ready in time for the start of the 2017 school year. The date for the Parent Workshop with Dr Pattison is Monday 22 August 2016, 7.00pm – 9.00pm. Invitations will go out to all parents early next week and, once we have received the RSVPs and determined how many parents will be attending, the venue will be announced. Uniform Change We are aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to source sports shoes which are predominantly white, particularly for Secondary students. For this reason, the policy for students in Years 5 to 12 has changed. Kindergarten to Year 4 There is no change to the sports shoe policy as students in Kindergarten to Year 4 wear their sports shoes as part of their everyday uniform. Therefore, the sports shoe uniform remains as it always has been – predominantly white sports shoes. Years 5 to 12 Students in these years wear sports shoes only for Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Sports. Starting immediately, these sports shoes can be any colour (although we would prefer parents and students to take a conservative approach to limit the competition with regard to who has the best/flashiest trainers). However, sports shoes must be running shoes or cross training shoes. Please see the last page of this newsletter for information about and examples of shoes that cannot be worn as sports shoes by our students in Years 5 to 12. Kind regards Kerry Robertson Principal

PRIMARY

Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome back to the new term. It was delightful to welcome the students on Wednesday morning and to see their eagerness in returning to school to see what awaited them in their learning environments. This term, we welcome Mrs O’Gorman (Year 6) who has replaced Mrs Swift, and Mrs Bailey in Kindergarten while Mrs Morgione is on long service. We have four new students in Primary and I would like to extend a warm welcome to them and their families as they embark on their educational journey at Frederick Irwin. During the holidays, several members of the Primary staff journeyed to Victoria to attend a two day study tour to continue to develop and refine our knowledge of developmental curriculum. We visited three centres and were inspired by the rich learning environments and the opportunity to talk with other professionals about their implementation of the Walker Learning Approach. Two of the centres visited were primary schools which have the pedagogy fully implemented from Kindergarten to Year 6. They were very inspirational and the Year 5 staff, Mrs Morgan, Mr Clark and I were very impressed with the learning environments and the rich learning experiences we witnessed. We have returned very excited about the opportunities we will continue to develop for the learners at Frederick Irwin. In the newsletter today, there is clarification related to acceptable footwear for Physical Education, Sports lessons and sporting events. For Primary, where the sport shoe is worn during the day as part of the uniform, Kindergarten to Year 4, it is expected that footwear will remain predominately white. Students in Years 5 and 6, who change for these sessions and events, will be able to wear coloured footwear that is supportive and suitable for the athletic activity providing it is conservative in appearance. As is the case now, students will change back into their formal uniform at the completion of these lessons and activities. Therefore, shoes that are part of the daily uniform must remain predominately white and those worn specifically for physical activity can be purchased to suit the demands of the activity if they are conservative in colour. If anyone has any queries or is wanting clarification regarding this change please do not hesitate to contact Mr Clark or myself. I am looking forward to a very productive and successful term filled with many exciting activities to engage the students in their learning. Kind regards Sue Skehan Head of Primary

VIRTUE

The virtue for Week 1 and 2 is Love. Love is a special feeling that fills your heart. You show love in a smile, a pleasant way of speaking, a thoughtful act or a hug. Love is treating people and things with special care and kindness because they mean so much to you. Love is treating other people just as you would like them to treat you – with care and respect.

Pre-Ordered Items All pre-ordered items will only be held for 10 working days once contact has been made – after this time the items will be put back on the shelf. Unfortunately, any item that has been taken-in cannot be returned if either unsuitable or unsold. Please bare this in mind when bringing in uniforms to sell. Have you any uniforms that no longer fit? Re-sell them through them through the Uniform Shop. If the items are freshly laundered and in a very good condition, we would like to assess them to possibly include in our second hand section. Forms are available from either the uniform shop, Reception or online – details needed: Name and address – so payment can be deducted from your school fees – once items are sold Date purchased – this will help set the selling price The selling price is set at 60% of the original price, and then you received an increased figure of 75% of the reduced selling price.
