However, it has also been an immensely rewarding term in so many ways. Anglican Schools Commission Week The second last week of Term 3 was ASC Week. How lovely to drive or walk down St George’s Terrace and see all the banners of the Anglican Schools Commission proudly displayed, especially our own Frederick Irwin banner. It was a great pleasure to attend the Anglican Schools Commission Concert at the Perth Concert Hall on the night of Friday 16 September. Our Soul Band represented the School, and their performance of Signed, Sealed, Delivered! (which I could be biased in believing) was the best performance of the night. A number of other students also represented the School in the combined orchestra, band and choirs. On Sunday 18 September, the Percussion Band and the Secondary Choir represented the School at the ASC Schools Eucharist at St George’s Cathedral. The Percussion Band led the procession into the Cathedral, creating great expectation and excitement for the service which was to follow; while the Secondary Choir’s singing was truly heartfelt and added a great deal to the service. Final Week of Term 3 The final week of Term 3 has seen three successful camps – Year 6 at Fairbridge, Year 9 Outdoor Education in the Nanga and Busselton areas, and Year 11 in Perth. The remainder of our Year 9s enjoyed an Alternative Programme at school and Curtin University. I have also had the privilege of visiting the Year 4 Educational Research Project Expo, where Year 4s from Assumption Catholic Primary and some of our parents came to view our students’ projects; the Year 7 Learning Journey which was a vibrant occasion with many parents and grandparents coming to appreciate the Year 7s’ work; and the Year 8 ORACY which took place over two days, with the Year 8s enjoying a Humanities and Social Science excursion on the alternate day. While last week, I so enjoyed joining the Year 1s for Grandparents’ Day. In amongst all of this there have been worship services and assemblies, and hopefully plenty of learning still being done, in the last week of term. Dear Parents and Caregivers Another busy term comes to a close today and I am pleased with the commitment of the students to their learning over the past ten weeks. Many classes have been involved in learning activities that have provided great stimulation to the education being undertaken and much enjoyment for the students. The development of life skills through these experiences is invaluable and the desire to develop and enhance self-management and greater responsibility towards becoming a life-long learner are what drives the planning and implementation of such learning opportunities. The role of explicit teaching is also comprehensively incorporated in the teaching and learning programmes in our desire to develop active rather than passive learners. On Wednesday evening, I visited Fairbridge to have a meal with the Year 6 campers and was delighted to hear that the staff, parents and students were having a wonderful time testing themselves physically and engaging readily in the activities on offer. Many students overcame fear and uncertainty to complete the various challenges and they were very proud of themselves. When I departed the students were settling down for their movie night after a day of full-on physical activity. As always, I would like to acknowledge my staff who work tirelessly to provide the varied experiences that add to the students’ learning and educational journey. Their extra time and effort are most appreciated. The contribution of our parents and family members in providing time, food, assistance and materials is also greatly valued as your input adds so much to each event. Thank you one and all as this has been a very busy term. At the end of a term marked by uncharacteristic amounts of illness I wish everyone a restful, safe and joy-filled holiday. Sue Skehan Head of Primary

VIRTUE

The virtue for Weeks 9 and 10 is Perseverance. Perseverance is being purposeful and steadfast. It is sticking to something, staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear to stop you. A good example is the story of the tortoise and the hare. Even though the tortoise was slower than the hare, he won the race because he persevered – he didn’t let anything stop him or distract him. He kept on going. Why Practise it? Without perseverance, people give up on things easily. They don’t keep their promises. When we persevere, people can depend on us to finish what we start and to keep our commitments. When we persevere, we stay friends even when the friendship is tested. We don’t give up until a problem is solved. How do you Practise it? You practise perseverance by committing to someone or something. Choose your commitments wisely and then stick with them. When you commit to a task, pace yourself and be persistent, doing it step-by-step. Stand by your friends even when they aren’t much fun, or are having a hard time. When trouble or doubts come up, be like a strong ship in a storm. Don’t let yourself become battered or blown off course. Just ride the waves. Thought of the Day “Never give up!”

OPTI-MINDS WINNERS

Congratulations to two Primary School Opti-MINDS teams, who competed at the Opti-MINDS State Finals on Saturday 17 September at Curtin University! Our ‘Language Literature’ team won first place (WA State Title), with our ‘Science Engineering’ Team also placing very well in the competition to win second place, competing against schools such as Iona, Chrysalis Montessori, Guildford Grammar, Helena College and Lake Joondalup Baptist. Our winning ‘Language Literature’ team will now travel to Brisbane on Thursday 13 October to compete for The National Title at Queensland University to be held on Sunday 16 October. As well as visiting the Queensland Science Museum and being involved in creative thinking workshops with the Directors of Opti-MINDS WA on the Friday, these students will be involved in the 20/20 Youth Forum on the Saturday and go into another ‘lock up’ for three hours on the Sunday afternoon, before presenting their creative solution. From the four Frederick Irwin Anglican School teams who entered the regional competitions, two of the teams were through to the State Finals, which involved a three hour ‘lock up’ where they had to creatively solve a problem. The groups had to build a model, make their props and costumes, plan their script and perform and present their solution after the three hours. Each member of the four original teams had spent from 9.00am until 3.30pm at school for seven out of eight Sundays, working and rehearsing, and we congratulate them on their dedication, commitment and enthusiasm. Kind regards Cheryle Rudland Learning Enrichment (Primary)

STUDENTS’ BAKE SALE

The Year 11 Children, Families and the Community class have been working on a task which involves helping out a student-selected local charity, 'Halo'. Halo is a charity that helps those without a roof over their head or who are struggling financially. Since the local soup kitchen is not open on Sundays, Halo fills the gap and allows the homeless to eat on Sundays. Our Year 11 Children, Families and the Community students have organised for donations to be made to help the homeless which include sanitary items, hygiene items, food and water. Students also raised funds on Friday 16 September during recess for Halo by baking chocolate cakes, vanilla cupcakes, caramel slice and chocolate chip biscuits to sell at the School Bake Sale. Money raised from the Bake Sale totalled $320, and will be sent to Halo. Home Economics teacher, Ms Eliza Steyl, said that it was great to see the turnout of Secondary students at the Bake Sale. "The Home Economics students and I love creating opportunities where all students are able to participate in the 'giving process', as without their purchases on the day, we wouldn't have been able to raise as much money as we did. "I know the whole class is looking forward to sending on the money we collected," she said. Students in the Home Economics class who baked the goodies said that they were happy with the involvement from the school community. "Thank you to students, staff and parents for all the donations, and for supporting our cause."

AFTER SCHOOL GOLF PROGRAMME

The after-school golf programme, conducted at Meadow Springs Golf Course by Craig Tapp, will continue in Term 4 and is open to students, from Year 5 onwards, of all golfing ability from complete beginners to seasoned pro’s and everyone in between. Term 4 sees a slight change to the structure of the programme with students able to participate on either the Monday or the Friday sessions with the option to participate in both still available. The programme will begin in Week 3 and run until Week 9 from 3.45pm – 5.00pm and will focus on all aspects of golf. The cost is $120 if students are involved in either the Monday programme or the Friday programme, with a discounted price of $200 available if they participate in both. (All financial transactions take place between Craig Tapp and parents). If you would like your son/daughter to be involved or have any further questions, please contact me on (08) 9537 0000 or [email protected] Kind regards Mr Daniel Harrop Health and Physical Education Teacher/Head of Ellis House

WINTER SPORT

The end of Term 3 coincides with the end of the many winter sport fixtures within the Peel Region. Frederick Irwin Anglican School had 32 teams participating in winter fixtures. Student participation in co-curricular activity continues to be an important part of the culture of our school and the lives of a very large percentage of our students and their families. One of our primary goals is to provide the opportunity for all students at Frederick Irwin to participate in a quality sporting experience, where all players are valued and develop skills in a supportive environment. Ultimately it’s about enjoyment and fun, developing some resilience, dealing with victory and defeat and creating an enthusiasm to want to continue to play again next season. Participation also contributes to the maintenance of a healthy active lifestyle. We acknowledge all the students of Frederick Irwin Anglican School who have represented us in such an exemplary manner throughout the season and look forward to celebrating the season at the various team windups. As a school community we also very much thank all those parents and coaches who have supported student participation in the various sports this winter. In particular, we thank Mrs Claire Booker (netball), Mrs Sarah Hull (soccer) and Father Noel Oakey (hockey), our winter sport coordinators for 2016. Thanks again to the many parents who have supported our involvement in sport. We are always willing to develop opportunities available to our students, so if there are suggestions as to how we can improve then please pass them on to me [email protected] We look forward to summer fixtures in particular Basketball where we will have 34 teams from Pre-Primary to Year 10 representing us in the Mandurah Basketball Association’s Summer Competition. NETBALL CLUB

The Mandurah Netball Association season has finished for our winter netball teams, with 2016 proving to be very successful for Frederick Irwin Netball. We had seven Primary School teams playing in the local competition and six Secondary teams. For the first time, the school finished the season with four of our teams in Grand Finals and two victorious teams. Congratulations to Frederick Irwin Teams #11 and #12! The primary focus for Frederick Irwin Netball in 2016 has been to provide an opportunity for all players to develop their skills and understanding of netball, within a supportive team environment whilst having fun representing their school. All players had the opportunity to gain experience in each position on the court whilst also fostering an opportunity for some team success. Success is not only measured by games won but also by experience gained. 2016 has proven to be a very successful season for school netball. This year we fielded an A5 team in the junior division – this is the highest team the School has had and we aim to build on that each year, with an A1 team as our ultimate goal. We had several of our coaches complete their Foundation Level of coaching accreditation, and another who completed her Development Level, and we will continue to offer this coaching education next year. We also had several Secondary students step into coaching and assistant coaching roles, which was a fantastic opportunity for the younger players to learn from the older girls. We would like to thank all of our coaches and managers who took on a role to support the sport in the School. We had two players, Abigail BURBIDGE ARN7 and Nolwazi MPOFU ELL5, complete the umpiring course, and Abi successfully umpired a full season of games with great competence. Congratulations to Cameron SKEGGS GOR6, Danielle BOOKER GOR1, Elise WINROW ARN4, Abigail BURBIDGE ARN7 and Matilda DODS ROS4 who have played 95 games of netball for the School. We look forward to celebrating their 100 games next season. Congratulations to the following players who were the recipients of the Frederick Irwin Team Award for 2016: Frederick Irwin # 1 – Sienna DAVIES 1P Frederick Irwin #2 – Grace HATTON 2S Frederick Irwin #3 – Jessica MEARES 3GT Frederick Irwin #4 – Marlee DE PEDRO 3GT Frederick Irwin #5 – Grace PITSIKAS 4M Frederick Irwin #6 – Emily MADIGAN 5M Frederick Irwin #7 – Dakota SULLY 5P Frederick Irwin #8 – Harriet ROBERTSON 7TD Frederick Irwin #9 – Luke STOREY 6O Frederick Irwin #10 – Renae COULSON ARN3 Frederick Irwin #11 – Kaitlyn HATCHETT ARN3 Frederick Irwin #12 – Naimina NEVES ROS7 Frederick Irwin #13 – Tiana KINGI GOR4

ACC ATHLETICS

On what could only be considered an appalling day for athletics – heavy rain squalls, wind and very cold temperatures – a very hardy band of students and four staff members headed to the State Athletics Centre in Perry Lakes to contest the E Division ACC Athletics Carnival. A great opportunity to compete at such an excellent facility! As a school community we can once again be extremely proud of the participation of our students. Without exception every student was exemplary in their conduct and their determination to achieve to the best of their ability. Some were a little daunted by the prospect of competing at such a level but all were up to the challenge. Our senior students enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school for one last time, with some who had been part of our athletics team every year since Year 8. It was a very close competition and as a school we finished fifth overall; a pleasing effort and great experience for the members of the team. Congratulations to all team members!

Forms are available from either the uniform shop, Reception or online – details needed: Name and address – so payment can be deducted from your school fees – once items are sold Date purchased – this will help set the selling price The selling price is set at 60% of the original price, and then you received an increased figure of 75% off the reduced selling price from July 2015. Lost Uniforms Several parents have reported lost/taken uniform items. Can you all please check your children uniforms for names and, if the item is not yours, please return it to the school office as soon as possible, where we are able to give the item to the correct child. If you know the child please pass it on to the owner. Please be mindful that all items of clothing MUST have your child’s name on them. This will not only reduce the risk of lost items, which result in additional costs for families, but items can easily be returned. Blazer 2017 Blazers are a compulsory item of the winter uniform for ALL students from Years 7 in 2017. Please arrange an appointment with your child for fitting and ordering of the school blazer, before Friday 2 December 2016. Blazers ordered after this date will have to be ordered individually and therefore will not be subject to the lower price afforded by the large order. Also, blazers not ordered by this time may not be ready for Term 2 of 2017, when the blazer is a compulsory uniform item for all Secondary students. If your current Secondary student is in need of a new larger school blazer for 2017, please call into the Uniform Shop before 2 December 2016. If you have a blazer that will not fit for next winter, please have it dry-cleaned and bring it into the uniform shop as soon as possible, as we are currently taking orders and selling new and second-hand blazers for our 2017 Year 7s. 2016 Year 5 Students – Primary Graduation Tops For 2017, Frederick Irwin will have one year group completing Primary School; for current Year 5 students this will be in their last year in Primary in 2017. We would like to recognise this with a special top for all current Year 5s. As all the students will require a gold polo as part of their sports uniform, we have decided to have this top made with printing on the back. The only additional cost to a new gold sports top will be the screen printing. Please note: this gold/green sports polo can only be worn for the 2017 year. The top can then be kept as a memento of their Primary years and cannot be worn into Year 7. Please call into the Uniform Shop to pre-order your size, ready for delivery in February 2017, by 28 October 2016 at the LATEST – no new orders will be taken after this date. 2017 Year 5 Students From February 2017, current Year 4 students will be moving into Year 5, you may need to purchase additional formal uniforms, as the formal uniform will be worn for the whole week (full 5 days) and students will change at school for timetabled sports.
