Genesis 2:7-9;3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19;

Matthew 4:1-11

All suffering and evil in this world are traceable to the original sin of our First Parents. Snakes never talked, and probably the sin was not the eating of an apple or other fruit. Whatever the sin was, it was self-deception. When our First Parents sinned, they lost for themselves and for all their descendants the gift of sharing God’s life (grace), the gift of immortality, and the gift of freedom from suffering. As sin entered through the one man, Adam, so grace and life are restored by the new Adam, Jesus Christ. By his life, death, and resur-rection, Jesus puts death to death, restores life to us, and imparts his Spirit to us. But we are still capable of sinning again. Like our First Parents, we can deceive ourselves. The temptations of Jesus are not like our temptations. We are always tempted at our most vulnerable point. For Jesus, it was a temptation to be the kind of glorious Messiah people expected. It was a temptation to use his divine power for his own benefit. It was a temptation to avoid the ordeal of the cross by some spectacular act which would compel belief. Our temptations are different. We must constantly guard against self- deception, against rationalizing, against indifference, and against presumption. It is easy for us to justify ourselves because “everyone” else is doing it. It is easy to put off repentance because “there’s always time.” It is easy to think that we have “more important things to do” than to do the religious bit. One day we shall stand alone before the judgment seat of God. Will our excuses stand up? Use Lent as the time to be more fervent in prayer, more generous in charity, more eager in celebrating the mysteries of faith.

starting place – a goal – a disposition. Henri Nouwen is one of my favoritewriters, and he gives us a beautiful reflection on this very thing.

Make God’s Unconditional Love VisibleWhenever, contrary to the world’s vindictiveness, we love our enemy, weexhibit something of the perfect love of God, whose will is to bring all

human beings together as children of one Father.Whenever we forgive instead of getting angry at one another or righteously

holding a grudge, bless instead of cursing one another,… tend one another’s wounds instead of rubbing salt into them, hearteninstead of discouraging one another, give hope instead of driving one

another to despair, hug instead of harassing one another,… welcome instead of cold shouldering one another, thank instead ofcriticizing one another, praise instead of maligning one another ...

in short, whenever we opt for and not against one another,we make God’s unconditional love visible;

we are diminishing violenceand giving birth to a new community.

This new community is called the Kingdom of God.A blessed beginning to everyone’s Lent.

Lenten Eucharistic Adoration at St. Francis

We will be offering Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament onWednesdays, until Wednesday of Holy Week, April 8.

The time slots are for one hour,7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. followed by Benediction andMass.

Lenten Regulations 1. ABSTINENCE – Everyone 14 years of age and

over is bound to abstain from meat on AshWednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. FAST – Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 isrequired to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one fullmeatless meal is permitted. Lenten Eucharistic Adoration at St. Francis

We will be offering Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament onWednesdays, until Wednesday of Holy Week, April 8.

The time slots are for one hour,7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. followed by Benediction andMass.

Lenten Regulations 1. ABSTINENCE – Everyone 14 years of age and

over is bound to abstain from meat on AshWednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. FAST – Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 isrequired to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one fullmeatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals,sufficient to maintain strength may be taken accordingto each person’s needs, but together these two shouldnot equal another full meal. Eating between meals isnot permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit

juices) are allowed.3. To disregard completely the law of fast and

abstinence is considered seriously sinful.May this holy season be a time of spiritual

renewal for each of us!

From Father Bob’s Desk… So Lent has begun, and I thought it would be practical to provide a good

starting place – a goal – a disposition. Henri Nouwen is one of my favoritewriters, and he gives us a beautiful reflection on this very thing.

Make God’s Unconditional Love VisibleWhenever, contrary to the world’s vindictiveness, we love our enemy, weexhibit something of the perfect love of God, whose will is to bring all

human beings together as children of one Father.Whenever we forgive instead of getting angry at one another or righteously

holding a grudge, bless instead of cursing one another,… tend one another’s wounds instead of rubbing salt into them, hearteninstead of discouraging one another, give hope instead of driving one

another to despair, hug instead of harassing one another,… welcome instead of cold shouldering one another, thank instead ofcriticizing one another, praise instead of maligning one another ...

in short, whenever we opt for and not against one another,we make God’s unconditional love visible;

we are diminishing violenceand giving birth to a new community.

This new community is called the Kingdom of God.A blessed beginning to everyone’s Lent.
