DAUGHTERS OF MARY

Monthly mee/ng will be Tuesday,

November 26th at 7:00 pm in the Church Hall.

All ladies of the parish are welcome to a,end!

Dear Friends,

“Be What You are and Be at its Best.” S.F.S In all four gospels Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” At that moment, it was Pilate who was sitting on a throne of judgment, and Jesus was a manacled prisoner before him, totally at his mercy, and soon to be put to death. When Christians assert that Christ is King, they are not associating him with secular images of power; it is absurd to imagine him lined up with, say, Herod the Great, or Nero, or Henry VIII, or with any king we have ever seen or read about. Christians were persecuted by the Roman Empire for repeating that Christ was Lord and King, because this was taken to mean that he was looking for what Caesar had. But Jesus is the exact opposite of an earthly king. When the feast of Christ the King was added to the Church’s calendar in 1925 it was to make a statement about the hollow pretensions of Mussolini, who at that time had been ruling Italy for three years, and about the rising power of Hitler’s Nazi Party, and about all dictatorships. The crown that Christ wears is a crown of thorns. To call Christ our king is a subversive declaration, as it was for the early Christians; it is to say that anyone who presumes to lead us must be prepared, like him, to wear a crown of thorns. It is to situate oneself in the tradition of the Hebrew prophets who declared that leaders must be shepherds of the people, caring for them, dealing wisely, and doing justice in the land. When Israel was about to choose its first king, God warned them through the prophet Samuel that a king would lord it over them, tax them harshly, and promote inequality and injustice. And that is what most of their kings did. We have to ask whether it is what the majority of kings, emperors, and political leaders have done throughout history. Worldly kingdoms are built on power and wealth. But where we see forgiveness, we are seeing the kingdom of God. Deep inside the black heart of the world at its worst, the seed of God's word is stirring with new life. "The kingdom of God is among you," Jesus said (Lk.17:21). But we are still very far from seeing the harvest, so we have to pray, “May your kingdom come!" (Matt.6:10).

“Be Blessed and Be a Blessing”

Yours in Christ & Mary, Fr. R. Mathias MSFS

SECRET ANGELS PROJECT REMINDER… If there are still Angel Tags on the Secret Angels Tree, please consider taking one to help us provide a gift for

someone. You could be making this a special Christmas for someone. Please return your Secret Angel gift with the

tag attached by Sunday, December 15. We will be transporting all the gifts and food from church to the multi-purpose building after 11:00 a.m. mass that day to sort and

pack everything. We will need help to transport everything and would greatly appreciate your assistance. If you want to help in sorting and packing food and gifts that day, please contact Sherry Butler at 269-273-2155 or

616-334-3262. Please leave food donations in the boxes in the church entrance. If you missed our flyer insert in the bulletin, there are extras in the pouch on the wall by the

tree and on the table.

Thank you for assisting us in making this Christmas very special for others who may need a little extra help to

provide for themselves and/or their family.

The office will be closed Friday, the 29th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Please join us for a Chili/Soup supper to celebrate our Parish for the “Feast of Immaculate Conception” on Sat. Dec. 7th after the 4:00 mass. You can bring your favorite chili/soup to share. We will need some sides and desserts. Hot dogs will be served as

well. After dinner, stay for games, fellowship and fun.

Our Holiday Extravaganza was a huge success again this

year thanks to all of you! We are so thankful for your great support and wonderful donations that helped to

make our event another amazing success.

Deepest appreciation to our chairpersons, booth and kitchen volunteers, crafters and wood cutters, donors, and all of you who visited and supported this wonderful event

sponsored by the Daughters of Mary, I.C. School, and Knights of Columbus. We hope you had a great time and

congratulations to all our raffle winners; the list of lucky winners is posted on the church bulletin board.

We so enjoyed working and spending many hours together, but it also takes a lot of hard work and

dedication by many individuals who volunteer year after year, and do so much behind the scenes. Again, thank you to each of you for your generosity of time, special

talents, and wonderful gifts. We could not do this without all of you! You are truly a blessing.
