SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY, August 2
First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3 Psalm: 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18
Second Reading: Romans 8:35, 37-39 Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21
“Be What You are and Be at its Best.” S.F.S
Dear Friends, Ten centuries before Christ, the son of David became the King of Israel. Solomon was a young man. He realized his lack of experience and his lack of ability to govern Israel. The Lord told him to ask for any gift, and it would be granted. Solomon could have asked for wealth, since with immense wealth he could buy off any kingdom that got in his way. Or he could have asked for absolute power, since he could then destroy any kingdom that got in his way. He could have asked for any number of things. But he asked for wisdom. Wisdom is insight into the meaning of things. Such meaning manifests itself chiefly when Wisdom shows how everything fits together: how everything has its place. This wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is through the providential power of the Holy Spirit that St. Paul’s words in today’s Second Reading are true: “all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” This purpose we can consider as God’s providential will, which converges in Christ. St. Paul explains this as he continues: “those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He might be the firstborn”. However, before the advent of this firstborn, the Old Testament already held seven books called the “Wisdom Literature”: The Books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, Song of Songs, and Sirach (incidentally, these are some of the best books of the Bible for spiritual reading). The Wisdom of Israel was unlike the wisdom taught by many ancient cultures and is also unlike the “conventional wisdom” upon which our society operates today. Psalm 111:10 tells us that “the fear of the Lord” is the beginning of sharing in divine wisdom. But wisdom is not some “pie in the sky” virtue. It’s eminently practical. Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom to govern God’s people because he was aware and humble enough to admit that he was young and unskilled in leadership. So, the Lord is also asking us what we want from Him. Certainly, it would be something that we have to think carefully about. It would be something like the treasure hidden in a field, or like that pearl of great value that the gospel speaks of. In both cases, the two finders sold everything they own and bought it. But also like the fishermen who hauled in the dragnet and then collected the good fish in a basket and threw away those that are of no use, we also need the wisdom to discern what is good and what is fleeting and temporary.
“Be Blessed and Be a Blessing”
Yours lovingly in Christ & Mary,
Fr. R. Mathias MSFS

Tuition Angel: Our school has pledged not to turn away, for financial reasons, any Catholic family who desires to attend our school. In order to operate there
must be tuition. The School Commission, Trust Board, Administration, and staff of I.C.
strive to make our programs affordable. Tuition can still
however, be a struggle for some families. As we grow there is an ever-increasing request for tuition
assistance. Please prayerfully consider becoming a tuition angel by contributing to the Immaculate Conception scholarship fund. It is
easy and can make a huge difference in the life of a child. Simply drop off, mail, or place a check in the Sunday collection basket. Monthly envelopes can be found in your quarterly mailed contribution packet
labeled school tuition assistance. You may also use a debit/credit card by contacting the school. Thanks in
advance for your generosity
GOT EMPTIES?? The Knights of Columbus are still collecting returnable bottles, cans, and plastic containers. The empties can be dropped off at the pavilion behind the church. A container has been provided or you may leave them in your own plastic bags. Please call or text one of the numbers listed below if you plan on dropping off empties. We want to make sure that they’re moved into the pavilion. Thank You!!
